The atmosphere in Monterey Park had been tense for the past half month because of the escalating struggle between the two largest Chinese societies, Hongmen Zhiqing Hall and Longhua Association.
After 10 p.m., almost all the shops on the streets of Monterey Park would close. If anyone was still walking the streets at this time, and they were carrying weapons, there was no doubt they belonged to one of the two major societies.
During the past half month, there had been dozens of small-scale firefights between the two societies, each suffering losses. However, relative to each other, Zhiqing Hall had sustained greater losses because Longhua Association had a group of extremely high-quality gunmen who had the advantage in small-scale skirmishes.
