The battle didn't begin with a bang. It began with silence. Then motion—quick, silent, and sharp as a dagger.
Abigail had barely moved from behind her rock before a figure flashed by—too fast, almost invisible. Like a blur. She reacted on instinct, changing the quill into a rapier, snapping it into a wide horizontal arc. The air shimmered. A pulse of energy blasted outward from the rapier just in time to clip her attacker's heel.
The blur resolved into a lean man dressed in dark gray leathers, his eyes alight with sadistic glee despite the stumble. His boot skidded across the slick cave floor, but he twisted mid-air and landed perfectly. No wasted motion. Fast. Too fast.
