Chapter 109 - Beyond the Burning Horizon (108)

Starfania led the way, her eyes scanning for guards, while Violet clutched her brother's arms nervously. The faint glow of torches lit the street ahead, the sound of armored footsteps echoing ominously.

" We need to move faster, " Aeron whispered, glancing back. " They're closing in. "

Starfania's heart pounded, her thoughts racing. If they were caught, it wouldn't just mean punishment for her–it would mean danger for her friends. She tightened her grip on the reins she carried in her hand, her free hand brushing against the smooth scales of Atlas. As they neared the gates, the group halted. A squad of guards stood blocking their path, their fiery red armor gleaming in the torchlight. Starfania took a breath, steeling herself for the confrontation.

"We can't turn back now," she murmured, urging the others to quiet down. Violet's eyes widened in fear, but she nodded, trying to muster courage. Aeron shifted nervously, his fingers twitching at his side. They had come too far, and the thought of retreat was unbearable. Atlas, sensing the tension, let out a low rumble, his scales shimmering in the dim light. Starfania patted him gently, comforted by his presence.

"We'll find a way through," she reassured the group, though doubt crept into her voice. The guards seemed to be on high alert, their glances searching every shadow.

"Maybe if we split up," Aeron suggested, glancing towards a narrow alley to their left. Starfania shook her head firmly. "No. We stick together. We're stronger as a team."

The guards had started to move, spreading out in a tight formation. One of them, taller than the rest, stepped forward, a sinister grin on his face.

"What do we have here?" he taunted, blocking their escape route. The others laughed, their armor clanking with each step. Starfania could feel panic rising in her chest. She could not let them capture her friends.

"Now!" she shouted suddenly, and before the guards could react, she dashed to the side, pulling Violet and Aeron along with her. Atlas heeled, his powerful body crashing into the nearest guard, sending him tumbling. They darted into the alley, the sound of pursuit echoing behind them. Starfania's heart raced as they navigated the maze of shadows, every corner offering fresh fears and fleeting hope.

"Keep moving! Don't look back!" she urged, adrenaline fueling her speed. As they were running, Drogo decided they were getting nowhere on foot. He grabbed Violet by his teeth gently, throwing her onto his back. Aeron caught onto this and quickly hopped onto his back. As he yelled towards Starfania, "You need to fly on, Atlas. It's the only way we're escaping this."

Starfania nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She rushed towards Atlas, who was anxiously pawing the ground, sensing the urgency in the air. With a swift motion, she mounted him, gripping his horn tightly.

"Let's go, Atlas!" she shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos. Atlas launched into the sky, wings beating fiercely against the wind. Below, Drogo thundered forward, his powerful legs propelling them through the underbrush. Aeron felt the rush of the wind against his face and the jolt of the ground beneath them. He turned to look back for a moment, fear gripping his heart, but quickly forced himself to focus ahead.

"Keep your eyes forward, don't get distracted!" Violet called, her voice steady despite the tension. The sound of their pursuers grew softer, a reminder that they were now heading towards freedom.

The night sky stretched out around them, a canvas of stars and swirling clouds. Starfania pulled back her hood, letting the cool wind whip through her hair. She looked towards her right to see her friends, who flew along-side on the back of Drogo.

" This is incredible, " Violet said, her earlier panic replaced by wonder. Starfania smiled, her heart swelling. " It's more than incredible. It's freedom. "

They soared higher; the ground disappearing beneath them like a forgotten dream. The world felt vast and small all at once, each star a point of light in the limitless dark. Violet shouted with excitement, pointing out constellations. "Look! There's Orion!"

Atlas's massive wings beat rhythmically, creating a gust that tousled Starfania's hair even more. She laughed, feeling alive. The blend of adrenaline and joy coursed through her veins.

"Can you believe we made it this far?" Aeron asked, his eyes sparkling. Starfania glanced down briefly, the landscape far below now just a patchwork of shapes and shadows.

"It's just the beginning," she replied, a thrill of possibility dancing in her voice. They were on the edge of something new, a journey that stretched beyond the horizon. The moon hung low, casting a silver glow over them, illuminating their path. Every heartbeat felt like a promise—of adventure, of friendship, of the unknown waiting to be explored.
