For the next few weeks, Melissa remained dedicated to her promise. She didn't let herself slow down—not until every last person who had been affected by her father's crimes had either received closure or been reunited with their loved ones.
Each day was filled with long hours of work. Melissa oversaw the return of every last missing person, ensuring that the smuggled individuals were safely returned to their families.
For those who had perished, she made sure their remains were given back with the dignity they deserved.
When the final name on her list was checked off, Melissa stood in her office, staring at the reports before her. Every person—every single one—had either been found alive, healed and returned home or given a proper farewell.
She exhaled deeply, her hands resting on the desk. It was over. She had done it.
The news spread across I-Island quickly. People gathered in public squares, in homes, in laboratories, talking about what Melissa had achieved. The pain of the past could never fully be erased, but she had given them peace. She had fulfilled her promise.
One evening, as Melissa walked through the central district, a small group of people approached her.
A woman, who had once been cold and skeptical, stepped forward. "Melissa," she called.
Melissa turned, surprised to see the woman smiling at her.
"I just wanted to say… thank you," the woman said softly. "I never thought I'd see my brother again. But because of you, I got him back. You gave me my family back."
Melissa's heart swelled with warmth. She had heard many such words over the past weeks, but each time, it still felt like a weight lifting off her chest.
Before she could respond, an older man standing beside the woman spoke up. "We were wrong about you, Melissa. We were angry, and we blamed you, even though it wasn't your fault.
But you never ran away from it. You stood by us, and you never once hesitated to make things right. You didn't just give us back what we lost—you gave us hope for the future."
Melissa swallowed, emotions welling up inside her.
"I… I just did what had to be done," she said softly.
A little girl suddenly ran up and hugged her, her tiny arms barely reaching around Melissa's waist. "Thank you, Melissa!" she chirped.
Melissa gently placed a hand on the girl's head, feeling tears prick at her eyes.
The crowd around her clapped, some even cheering her name.
Melissa smiled through her emotions, looking at all the people she had once feared would never forgive her. But now, their faces were filled with gratitude, warmth, and acceptance.
That night, she sat with Izuku on a rooftop, overlooking the island. The lights shimmered across the city, a symbol of how life had moved forward.
"It's finally done," Melissa said, her voice quiet but full of relief.
Izuku nodded beside her. "You did it, Melissa." Izuku said as he patted her head
Melissa sat in silence for a while, staring out at the glowing city below. The wind was gentle, brushing against her skin as she hugged her knees close to her chest.
Izuku sat beside her, patient and quiet, letting her gather her thoughts. He could tell there was something on her mind.
After a moment, Melissa finally spoke, her voice soft and distant. "You know… I don't have many memories of my mother."
Izuku turned to her, listening intently.
Melissa smiled faintly, though there was sadness in her eyes. "She passed away when I was still really young. Sometimes, I struggle to even remember her face clearly. But… there are a few things that have stayed with me."
She rested her chin on her knees, her voice growing more tender. "She always told me to help people. Especially when they're going through something painful.
She believed that kindness wasn't just about doing good things—it was about lifting others up when they were at their lowest.
She said when people are at their lowest they need someone's hand, a hand that pulls them out of the darkness, a hand that reassures them that it's good to be okay, and that they aren't alone.
She said, sometimes you have no idea how much they need someone to believe in them when they can't believe in themselves, and helping people like that come out of their sufferings can sometimes be the biggest blessing for them.
And she said that if I ever get such a chance to ease their pain and give them comfort I should take that chance without thinking for a single second." Izuku nodded, understanding.
Melissa took a deep breath, her fingers clenching around the fabric of her pants. "And if you were ever the cause of someone's suffering," she continued, "then it becomes your duty to make things right, no matter what, no matter how much they hate you or curse you.
My mom always said that taking responsibility for your mistakes wasn't just about saying sorry—it was about proving with your actions that you meant it."
Her voice wavered slightly, and she blinked rapidly to stop the tears from forming. "That's why I did all of this, Izuku. Not just for the people of I-Island, but for myself.
I wanted to be the kind of person my mother would want me to be, a kind of daughter that my mother would have been proud of."
She turned to Izuku, her blue eyes shimmering with emotion. "Do you think… she would be proud of me?"
Izuku didn't hesitate. He reached out, gently bringing her into his embrace, the warmth in his touch reassuring. His voice was steady and full of certainty.
"Of course, she would, just look at the city, it's once again bustling happily because you took responsibility for it and helped people just like your mom had taught you to."
Melissa swallowed hard, her lips trembling slightly.
Izuku smiled at her, his green eyes filled with admiration. "You have her blood running through your veins, Melissa. And you've upheld her ideals so perfectly.
You didn't just help people—you gave them a new hope, closure, and a reason to believe in something better. If your mother were here today, she'd be looking at you with the biggest smile, so proud of the woman you've become."
Melissa let out a shaky breath, her vision blurring as the tears she had been holding back finally spilled over. She wiped them quickly, laughing softly through her emotions.
"You always know exactly what to say, Izuku. It's funny, you know. This ability of yours made me fall in love with you. We even had wild sex, and I showed you sides of myself that even I didn't know I had.
And yet, even now, after knowing you used me, I still can't bring myself to hate you. In fact, here I am, in your embrace, letting my heart out. I don't know what I should call myself when I'm falling more and more in love with you."
Izuku chuckled, shrugging. "I just say what's true."
Melissa sniffled, smiling through her tears. She turned back to the city, watching as life continued as normal, just like before. But something inside her had changed.
For the first time in years, she felt truly at peace, and more connected to her mother than she ever was.
She exhaled, leaning back against my chest cozily. "I never thought I'd get to this point. When this all started, I felt so lost and I didn't even know if people would ever forgive me after what my dad did.
But now… seeing how happy everyone is, I feel like a heavy weight was lifted from my shoulders and I can breathe again."
Izuku smiled at her. "That's because you earned it. You didn't just ask for forgiveness—you proved that you aren't your father's daughter but your mother's."
Melissa turned her head to look at him. "I couldn't have done it without you, Izuku. You were always there, supporting me in silence. I don't know if I should see everything that happened as good or bad.
In such a short time, I found someone I can trust completely—you. I saw my father's true nature, connected with my mother's memories, and built my own identity in front of the people of I-Island.
I also realized how much I could endure, how strong I could become. It feels like I went through my own metamorphosis, like a larva turning into a butterfly.
As if everything that happened was meant to make me stronger. In a way, it feels like a blessing in disguise.
Of course, that doesn't mean what happened to those people was okay. It never should have happened."
Izuku looked at her with a soft smile. "I know what you mean, Melissa. Those people's suffering had nothing to do with you. You had sufferings but you turned them into opportunities for growth.
You didn't just endure everything—you outgrown from it. You turned pain into strength, and doubt into determination. It's not easy to face the truth, especially about someone you love, but you did it.
And you didn't just stop there—you took responsibility and made things right, that's what matters." Melissa felt warmth spread through her chest at his words. She gave him a small, grateful smile.
After a few moments of silence, Izuku sighed. "Now that everything's settled, I think it's time for me to head back."
Melissa's eyes widened slightly. "Already?"
"I only stayed back to make sure you were safe, and you weren't made to suffer for your father's sins" Izuku admitted.
"Now that everything's back to normal and you're leading I-Island's new regulatory body, I know you don't need me watching over you anymore."
Melissa felt a pang of sadness but quickly pushed it down. She knew this was coming. Izuku had his own responsibilities, just as she had hers.
She gave him a soft smile. "You'll visit, right?"
Izuku grinned. "Of course. You think I'm some jerk that would disappear after having sex with you?"
Melissa chuckled. "I wouldn't be surprised if you actually did that."
Izuku shrugged. "In that case you better be careful Miss, who knows next time I might put something in your belly that you would have to carry for 9 months."
Listening to which, Melissa's mouth shut as her face turned a red mess. They sat in comfortable silence for a few moments before Melissa spoke again.
"Izuku… Thank you. For everything."
Izuku looked at her, his expression gentle. "No need to thank me, Melissa. Just keep doing what you're doing. I know you're going to make sure this island has a bright future."
Melissa nodded, determination settling in her heart.
