Confirming that Rowan and his family had escaped, Anna couldn't help but heave a sigh of relief.
The last thing she'd want was for her enemies to hold them hostage. That would change the entire flow of the battle.
Now, usually, she wouldn't be bothered if a few lives, especially those of mortals, were lost during battle.
However, Rowan was different. He was fiercely loyal to Adam, and Anna had also come to like him in the weeks she spent in Ravenfell.
But more importantly… there were children with him.
Her conscience couldn't possibly allow her to stand by and accept the death of innocent little kids.

She thought, her heart gripped by tension as she gazed at the shadowy pass wedged between the towering cliffs of the valley.
I can only hope there are no other enemies around.
