Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: A Real Battle

Let's go back to before the duel started.

Alix sat down in a relatively empty part of the bleachers and pulled out her spell book. Before starting to work she did attempt to watch the the duel but immediately lost interest. "I can already tell that this fight is going to be boring." So she turned her full attention to her spell book.

She flipped to "Omnia Nexus" in her book. According to Mo she had managed to cast this spell just the previous day. The problem was that she didn't have any clue as to what the spell did. Mo said that it was thanks to the spell that he could breathe on land but that was just an assumption based on the limited information at the time. Also, the fact that she had casted the spell directly on Mo was strange since very few sorcery spell are able to affect people other than the caster. In a positive way that is.

Alix sighed as she glanced up at the duel. The boy, Bennie or something like that, had manage to hit the girl's shield twice. 'I wish Mo were here sometimes. Then I could focus on him instead of this boring fight.'

'Aww, miss me already?" Alix's eyes widened as she scanned her surroundings. She hadn't spoken her words aloud and yet someone heard her.

And they sounded a lot like Mo.

'Helloooo. Are ya there Lexi? I could've sworn that I just heard ya." Alix realized that the voice was ringing inside her head.

'Mo? Are you actually in my head right now?" She couldn't see him but Alix could tell that the fish was smirking when he responded, 'The one and only!"

'How is this possible? To be able to mentally communicate across vast distances is a spell that doesn't exist!?"

'Look, I don't know anymore than you do, Lexi. I just know that I heard ya say that ya wished that I was with ya and so I responded to yer call." Alix was befuddled. She was truly amazed. 'Did I accidently create a spell that allows for long distance mental communication? Or do you think that this is something else?"

'I just said that I know as much, if not less, as yerself. I ain't no super smart sorcerer girl. I'm a fish." Alix rolled her eyes. 'I know that. I just got excited and asked the questions that I normally ask myself to you. I do not actually expect an answer from you."

'Oh." The two sat in silence for a few seconds when Alix noticed that the duel had ended in Ladle's victory.

'Soo did the duel get any better?" And thus we are back to where we ended.

'Damn Lexi! That's cold!" Alix folded her arms and scoffed. 'I am merely stating fact. The boy was only focused on being on the offensive. It was as though he had something to prove, fool's arrogance, which gave his opponent time to outsmart him.

The girl somehow misjudged the distance of her own attack, panicked, and left herself wide open for an attack. Her judgment afterwards would deserve some praise had it not only have worked due to her opponent's own incompetency. All around a boring novice duel."

'When ya put it like that I can see how it was unimpressive, but I didn't think that ya were payin' that much attention to it." Mo stated genuinely impressed. 'It was not really a decision for me to make. It was literally the only thing happening at the time and so I took in more information than I originally meant to." Alix and Mo had clearly already completely grown accustom to the telepathic communication.

This didn't change the circumstances around them though as the class continued. A few more uninteresting matches passed by as Alix continued to point out the flaws as though she had been on many battlefields in her life. Of course, her descriptions and opinions were merely based on her logical deductions and her analysis of the battle.

After another boring battle, the instructor called out the next names. He was clearly also disappointed in the quality of the battles as his eyes had glazed over. Though, it wasn't like he expected anything grand from a bunch of students anyway. "Next, Harrison Floie and Alix Deminal. Hurry down."

'Looks like my turn has come." Alix stood up and grabbed her satchel. Within the satchel were spells that she had already worked on over the past few days in preparation for this class. 'Guess I should shut up so ya can focus on yer opponent." Mo said but Alix countered. 'It shouldn't be impossible. He is quite the talented flame mage but he shouldn't pose many issues for me."

Had anyone heard Alix's opinion of her opponent they would have called her arrogant and insolent. Harrison Floie was the youngest of the Floie family. The Floie family was renowned for their advancements in the world as flame mages. Harrison was also the well recognized as the most talented person in their age group. He was quite cool-headed for a mage that uses the element of fire. Alix made it to the field and faced her opponent.

He had short red hair that curled upwards at the ends and shifted into yellow highlights. His face was quite well-shaped with a sharp chin and piercing orange eyes. He was taller than Alix, who stood at 5'6 or 170 cm, as he was 5'11 or 180 cm. He wore the male uniform being a dress shirt and tan dress pants with his red spellcaster's robe on.

"I hope to have a good duel with you." Harrison said politely and even bowed earning praise from the crowd.

"That's the young master of the Floie family for you. He's so respectful even to Insolent Alix." One boy said.

"Polite and good-looking. My ideal husband candidate." A female student responded.

Alix stood stared unimpressed at the boy before replying. "Acting polite, huh? You must be trying to earn the respect of our peers. You know, seeing as I have heard that you are a disappointment to your mother." The crowd gasped at the girl's words. Harrison meanwhile was simply confused.

"Wait what? Where did you hear that? No, why you even mention it?"

"Am I wrong? I heard that you are nowhere near as talented as your older sister. In fact, in comparison to many from the Floie ancestry you are actually the least talented. Is that not correct?" Harrison winced but managed to remain calm. "Look. I don't know what I did to insult you that you try to so desperately to provoke me but your offensive comments have no affect on me. Now hold your tongue and prepare for battle!"

Alix rolls up her sleaves while staring at the Harrison with a deadpan expresstion. "Of course, Hendrickson Floie."

"Wait, that's not-" Before the boy could finish his sentence Alix had already pounced at him. This caught the boy off guard but he quickly managed to gather mana to his hand and leap backwards narrowly avoiding a right hook from the girl. In the instant after avoiding the attack Harrison cast, "Flame Burst!" unleashing a small explosion from his hand.

Alix, expecting this, quickly dodged to the side only to see the she had also been read as the boy's palm was up in her direction. "Flame Stream!" A line a fire shot out of the boy's palm prompting the girl jump to the side, but not before throwing dust into the boy's eyes.

The crowd was surprised. It had only been a few seconds but they could already tell.

"We are not on their level."

"GAH!" Harrison cried out. His eyes shut instinctively giving Alix a chance to get away. When his sight returned he noticed that the girl had something else in her hand. Harrison stared at the girl dumbfounded. "What the hell type of mage throws dirt into someone's eyes?! No, are you even a mage? You tried to punch me!"

Alix ran forward fast as she could. "Oh a frontal assault. How original." Harrison rolled his eyes but stayed vigilant not knowing what to expect. Before Alix could get all the way to the boy he casted, "Blazed Lands" sending a low laying wave of flames at the girl. Leaving her no choice but to jump. Clearly planning for this he once again casted, "Flame Burst!" As the girl was right in front of him bringing forth yet another explosion and leaving smoke in the aftermath of the spell.

"A melee fighter could never win against a mage." The boy started to ready his next spell but was prevented as the girl had not blown back as he had expected. Instead, arms covering her face and Lis resonating around her like a powerful wall the girl flew through the smoke. Then, all of the Lis protecting seemed to gather around her right fist, or what was in her fist.

A small piece of parchment. The girl raised her closed fist and evoked the spell with it's name.

"Omnia Faust." A fist formed of pure neutral mana shot out from the girl's hand and hit the boy's shield changing the color from blue to yellow. The impact from the spell sent him sprawling backwards.

"I am not a mage, Henry." Alix stood looking down at the boy as he sat on the ground. "I am a sorceress." the boy was once again completely dumbfounded.

"And?! You're still trying to punch me! AND MY NAME IS HARRISON!" Henr- I mean Harrison quickly from the ground cast, "Fire Bolt!" and sent four small fire spheres flying at Alix. All of which she dodged with minimal movement.

Harrison, now standing again, dashed to the side and held up both of his palms casting, "Twin Flame Spheres!" sending out two big balls of fire flying at Alix. She quickly dived to the side and started to ran at him but, unexpectedly, one of the fireballs had curved and hit her directly on the side.

This time it was Alix that was knocked to the ground but she was barely down for an instant before immediately moving again. She had no time to sit around as her shield was now one hit away from breaking. At that moment Alix heard a voice.

'Are ya winnin', Lexi?" It was Mo. 'I am in an uncomfortable position right now but it is nothing that I can not handle." Alix jumped backwards dodging four more fire bolts being launched at her.

'Hmm. Hey, I want to try something.' Grabbed out two more, "Omnia Fausts" from her satchel and used them as a way to launch herself into the air to avoid the next two fireballs. 'What do you mean?" Alix questioned as though she had all the time in the world and was not in an intense battle.

'I feel like I can send you something. Not from the spell but through the silver string." Alix grabbed another spell from her satchel and casted, "Omnia Bloquer." summoning forth two crossed fists and blocking the incoming "Flame Stream!" from Harrison. 'I would ask what you mean but I am busy right now so go ahead and try it." Alix landed on the ground and dodged the boy again. She had not prepared many spells and, contrary to popular belief, running around and casting sorcery spells is quite exhausting.

"That's it. I'm finishing this." Harrison exclaimed. He was also getting quite tired so he needed this fight to be over with his next spell. "No more holding back." Harrison put both of his hands together and closed his eyes. The air around him seemed to begin to swirl and morph as a more mana than used so far was gathered before him.

"Oh no." Instructor Inengway prepared to intervine. Based on the movement of mana he could tell. Harrison was going to cast a third grade spell. However, the teacher stopped when his eyes landed on Alix. The girl seemed to have also completely stopped moving. Her eyes closed and her fists unclenched. She was completely calm. "I'll step in if I have to. But for now I'll trust these students." Inengway stood at the ready.

The mana in Harrison's palms began to ignite and expand. The spell emanating great power and pressure seemingly kicking up the wind. "The is the result of years of hard-work and dedication, not talent! My most powerful spell!" The fire within the boy's hands began to condense and shift form. Harrison spread his arms out to the sides and split the large mass of flames in two as they became a pair of giant fire birds.

Alix on the other hand, stood completely still. She focused on the string that Mo mentioned. He was right, it had become silver somehow and she felt something that she could pull on. 'Here it comes, Lexi! GET READY!" Instantaneously, the wind began to surge upwards around the young sorceress. Her robe and hair gently being lifted.

"My final spell!" Harrison shouted at the top of his lungs using every last bit of his energy as he finally casted it.

"BLAZING HERONS!!" The two giant fire birds completely took shape and flew forward spinning around each other so fast that they almost looked like a single giant stream of fire. Just as everyone believed it over for Alix...

'NOW!!!" Alix's eyes shot open as a surge of power exploded within her body. She stared down the spell before her as she held both of her palms before her but facing the ground. The air around her moistened and became dark almost as though she was standing within a raincloud. She quickly lifted her hands and a massive wave a darkness and water stood before her.

"Abyssal Sea: Consuming Tidal." She pushed her hands forward and the wave surged forward. It completely engulfed and extinguished the spell casted by Harrison. Harrison was frozen in fear as the wave continued forward and slammed into him consuming him just like his spell. The wave hit the barrier and dispersed leaving behind an unconscious Harrison Floie pressed against said barrier. He fell down and crashed down to the ground hard.

Instructor Inengway smirked. "Seems like I was worried about the wrong student. The duel has ended. The winner..."

Alix Deminal!!
