The house smelled like lemon polish and wood dust when I walked in.
Not new. Not sterile. Just... cared for. Like something that had once been still too long was finally being moved, reshaped, brought back to life.
Edward's house had always felt bigger than necessary, even more than Mark's; high ceilings, long hallways, doors to rooms that rarely saw use. But now, with the sun slanting through the east windows and the faint sound of Mark moving furniture down the hall, it felt different. Not heavy. Not hollow. Like a home again.
I took off my shoes near the front door and followed the sound of quiet grumbling toward what used to be Edward's study.
