While fear filled the air and the village made soft sounds, Naruto remained utterly, unnervingly silent. His body, which had been tense with rage and frustration moments ago, was now rigid, bent at the waist, his head bowed. He didn't move a muscle, didn't utter a sound.
This quiet from him was so deep, so unnatural for the usually loud Nanadaime Hokage, that it felt heavier than the bad news itself.
Kakashi and Sai exchanged a quick, worried glance. Something was deeply wrong. Naruto's anger, his impulsiveness, even his despair—these were emotions they were familiar with. But this, this absolute stillness, was unsettling. Sai, still pale from the genjutsu's lingering effects, subtly gestured to Kakashi, his eyes conveying a silent command: Check on him.
Kakashi, his own face worried under his mask, slowly lowered himself, bending at the knees to match Naruto's posture. He peered closer, his eyes widening in shock. Naruto's eyes were closed. Completely closed. A cold fear grew in Kakashi's stomach. His heart pounded. This was not normal. 'Naruto... he's never reacted like this. That revelation about the 'turtle'... it must have hit him harder than anything before. He's completely shut down. Has the pressure finally broken him?'
"Naruto?" Kakashi whispered, his voice full of sudden fear. He gently tapped Naruto's shoulder, then shook him a little harder. "Naruto! What's wrong, are you okay?!"
Sai, seeing Kakashi's fright, immediately scrambled forward, though still unsteady. "Naruto! Naruto, wake up!" he called out. His usual calm was broken by real worry. Both of them started calling his name louder, shaking him, a growing fear in their voices. They had no idea that Naruto was not out cold; he was just in a place they could not reach.
_NARUTO'S MINDSCAPE_
The change was sudden and sharp. One moment, the cold, hard alley. The urgent calls of his sensei and friend. The next, a huge, strange, empty space. Naruto found himself standing on a shallow pool of water.
The water shimmered with a soft, golden light, showing the reflection of the giant, monster-like figure in front of him. Small waves spread gently from his feet, making ripples in the perfect reflection of the strange, almost alien world. The big cave-like space around him was dim, but it glowed with a magical light. This light showed sharp rocks that went up to the ceiling he couldn't see. It was Kurama's mindscape, a place of pure power, a place he hadn't truly been in for a long time.
And there he was. Kurama. The Kyubi, a giant beast made of burning orange chakra. He was huge, making Naruto look tiny next to him. His fur, a bright, fiery orange, seemed to glow in the dim light. It showed his big, strong body.
Nine huge, bushy tails moved slowly behind him. Each one was as thick as a tree. They showed huge power. His ears, sharp and ready, moved a little. But it was his face that grabbed all attention: a fox-like nose, sharp, animal teeth shining in a constant angry look, and eyes – fierce, narrow eyes glowing with a dark red light. He was a being of pure, wild power. Just his gaze could make anyone shiver.
He crouched low, his giant paws spread out. His heavy weight made big, unsettling ripples in the watery floor. He looked... patient. Watching closely.
Naruto, though, was not patient. He stood there, a very small person in this big mindscape. His hands were squeezed into fists. His chest went up and down fast. The cool calm of his mindscape did nothing to cool the hot anger inside him.
"DAMN IT, KURAMA!" Naruto yelled. His voice bounced around the huge space. He looked up at the giant fox, his face twisted in pure, raw anger. "DAMN IT ALL! We got tricked! AGAIN! Right in front of us! And I... I just stood there! I gave him the 'turtle'! I FELL FOR IT!"
His frustration was a heavy weight, pushing him down. He wanted to hit something, anything. "Hikaru! That guy... he just keeps getting ahead! He's always one step ahead, always making fools of us! And now he has a name! Hikaru! It makes him even more real, damn it!"
Kurama's huge head tilted a bit. His glowing red eyes stayed on Naruto. A low, rumbling sound came from him. It wasn't an angry sound. It was deep, strong, almost... like a sigh.
"Calm down, Naruto." Kurama's voice, a big, deep sound that seemed to shake the very ground of the mindscape, was surprisingly steady. It wasn't teasing like usual. "Your anger helps nothing here. It just makes your thinking cloudy. You were outsmarted. It happens. Even to the Hokage."
"It shouldn't happen!" Naruto yelled back. He walked quickly on the water, his frustration making the golden ripples move wildly. "Not when the village is in danger! Not when we're supposed to protect everyone! We looked like fools! I looked like a fool, dattebayo!"
He threw his hands up in anger. "First the 'turtle' is gone, then Sai is caught in some crazy genjutsu, and then he shows up and does this right in front of us! What are we supposed to do, Kurama?! How do we stop someone who just keeps playing games like this?!"
Kurama lowered his head slightly. His eyes looked right through Naruto. "He's not playing games, Naruto. He's doing his plan. A very exact one. And you fell for a planned move, not a random trick." His voice got a little softer. "But you found the kettle, didn't you? That's a hint. And you now know his name. That's a weakness.Stop thinking about what you lost, and start thinking about what you gained."
Naruto stared at the giant fox. His anger was still hot, but a bit of something else, a tired feeling, started to show in his eyes. He hated being told what to do, especially when he felt so completely defeated. "Gained what, Kurama?" he mumbled, looking away. "More problems? More reasons to feel like I messed up?"
Kurama's glowing red eyes narrowed slightly, not in anger, but in a look that made Naruto feel truly seen. "Stop that." Kurama's deep voice rumbled, causing small waves to ripple out from Naruto's feet. "Self-pity is a weakness. You are the Hokage. You lead. You don't wallow in what could have been. You adapt to what is."
Naruto flinched at the sharpness in Kurama's tone, turning fully towards the fox. "Adapt to what, Kurama?! To being constantly outsmarted?! He used Sai! He used the village! He tricked us all, dattebayo! What kind of Hokage lets that happen?!" His voice rose again, the anger flaring anew, tinged with shame. "I'm supposed to protect them all! And I just walked straight into his trap!"
"And you walked out of it, didn't you?" Kurama countered, his voice steady. "He played his hand, and you saw it. Yes, he got what he wanted from that particular move, but he showed his face. He showed his power. And now, he has a name." Kurama leaned slightly closer, his massive snout just inches from Naruto's small form. "You always said you'd never go back on your word, that's your ninja way. Don't go back on your determination now just because it's difficult. It's supposed to be difficult. That's how you grow."
Naruto looked down at the rippling water, the golden light reflecting his frustrated face. The words 'He has a name' echoed in his mind. It was true. Before, it was just "the Rinnegan user," a faceless, powerful enemy. Now, it was Hikaru. That did make him more real. More... beatable. But also more dangerous.
"But... what if he keeps doing this?" Naruto mumbled, his voice quieter now, the raw fury settling into a weary apprehension. "What if he has more tricks? He seems to know everything!"
"Then you learn his tricks," Kurama stated simply, his voice losing its demanding edge and becoming more grounded. "Every shinobi has tells. Every plan has weaknesses. His genjutsu took Sai down, yes, but Sai protested it wasn't mild. It was profound. That tells you something about his skill. That's a physical piece of the puzzle you can use."
Kurama shifted slightly, drawing his massive paws closer. "Think, Naruto. When you fought Pain, did you give up when he showed his true power? No. When you fought Obito, did you collapse when he revealed his plan? No."
Kurama's voice grew firm, resonating with ancient wisdom. "You analyze. You strategize. You use what you know. You just got a very important piece of information. Hikaru has a name. He is an Uchiha. He wields the Rinnegan. He uses powerful genjutsu. And he's focused on the 'turtle'. What do you do with that information, Hokage?"
Naruto slowly lifted his head, meeting Kurama's fierce, red eyes. The anger hadn't vanished completely, but it was no longer a wild fire consuming him. It was a controlled heat, hardening into resolve. Kurama was right. He had felt this overwhelming frustration before, this feeling of being outmatched. But he'd always found a way. He always had to. For the village.
'I can't let this rattle me,' Naruto thought, his jaw tightening, not in anger, but in firm decision. 'Hikaru... he's real. And if he's real, he can be stopped.'
He took a deep breath, the spiritual air of the mindscape filling his lungs. The ripples around his feet settled, the golden light steadying. His eyes, though still serious, now held a familiar spark of determination. "Right," he said, his voice lower, but firm. "Right. The kettle. His name. We have to figure out what he wants with the 'turtle'. And why he's doing this."
Kurama grunted, a sound that could be approval, or simply acknowledgment. "Good. Now you're thinking like a Hokage again. The path forward is rarely clear, but it's always there. You just have to be calm enough to see it."
Naruto nodded, his fists still clenched, but now with focus rather than undirected rage. He felt a shift within himself, the chaotic storm beginning to recede, replaced by a cold, clear resolve. He was ready to face this. Ready to lead.
Kakashi and Sai continued to call out Naruto's name, their voices filled with growing fear. They shook him gently, then harder, desperation creeping into their eyes. The silence from the Hokage was unbearable, each passing second feeling like an eternity.
Then, with a soft gasp, Naruto's eyes fluttered open. His blue eyes, usually so bright and full of life, were still a little distant, but the fog was clearing. He blinked, slowly, taking in the worried faces of Kakashi and Sai hovering over him.
"Naruto! You're awake!" Sai breathed out, relief washing over his pale features. His shoulders slumped, the tension draining from his body.
Kakashi let out a long, audible sigh, as if he'd been holding his breath for minutes. He put a hand on Naruto's shoulder, a squeeze that spoke volumes of his profound relief. "Naruto, are you alright?! What in the world happened?" His voice was raspy with worry. 'He looks... different. Calmer, somehow. But what was that?'
Naruto slowly pushed himself up. He looked at Sai, a small, genuine smile forming on his face. "Sai... I'm so sorry, dattebayo." His voice was low, laced with regret. "I shouldn't have yelled at you like that. It wasn't your fault. I was just... really mad. And scared." He extended a hand to help Sai up from where he had been kneeling.
Sai looked surprised by the apology, a rare moment of awkwardness for him. "It's... fine, Naruto," he mumbled, accepting the hand and slowly getting to his feet. "We were just... so worried. You just froze. What happened?"
Naruto took a deep breath, his gaze moving between Kakashi and Sai. The frantic worry in their eyes was clear. "I... I was talking to Kurama," he explained, his voice quiet but steady. "Inside my mind. I went to my mindscape."
Kakashi's eyes widened slightly, then narrowed in understanding. 'So that's what it was. Not a genjutsu. Naruto was just... connecting with Kurama. No wonder we couldn't reach him.'
Sai, though not fully grasping the depths of a Jinchuriki's mindscape, still understood that Naruto wasn't physically harmed, merely elsewhere in consciousness. The immediate fear that something terrible had happened to Naruto eased considerably for both of them.
As they stood there, a moment of calm settling over the trio, a figure darted past them on a nearby rooftop, moving quickly and carefully. This shinobi was dressed in standard village gear, clearly on patrol, his movements sharp and focused, eyes constantly scanning the damaged buildings.
Naruto's eyes, now clear and sharp with renewed focus from his talk with Kurama, instantly picked up on something specific about their movements.
"Hey! You!" Naruto called out, his voice cutting through the night air.
The shinobi stopped instantly, turning towards the Hokage and his companions, bowing respectfully. "Hokage-sama!"
Naruto took a step forward, his gaze direct. "Are you a sensory shinobi?" he asked, his voice calm, but with an underlying urgency.
His mind, now clear, was already putting pieces together, forming a new path.
The shinobi straightened, nodding. "Yes, Hokage-sama. I am a sensory ninja. I was checking for any remaining trapped civilians or enemy presence."
Naruto nodded, his eyes bright with a new idea. "Good. Can you use Shin Denshin no Jutsu?" he asked, his voice calm and firm. 'This is it. This is how we get ahead.'
The sensory shinobi paused. He thought for a moment, his brow crinkling slightly. Shin Denshin no Jutsu, the Mind Transmission Jutsu, was a powerful, difficult technique. It let a ninja send their thoughts directly into another person's mind, no matter how far away they were. It took a lot of skill and focus. But this was the Hokage asking.
Then, a look of strong purpose came over his face. He quickly nodded. "Yes, Hokage-sama! You can trust me with this!" His voice was full of respect and certainty.
Naruto's expression softened, a brief nod of approval. "Good," he said, turning slightly, his voice now lower but very serious. "I need you to connect me with Ino Yamanaka. She's currently outside the village."
As all this happened, Kakashi and Sai watched, totally confused. They had just seen Naruto furious, then frozen, then calm. And now he was giving orders to a sensory ninja about some Mind Transmission Jutsu, wanting to talk to Ino? Why Ino? And why was she outside the village?
Sai took a step forward, his pale face showing his confusion. 'What is he doing? He was just out of it, and now he's giving secret orders? Is he really okay? Is he thinking clearly?' He tried to reach out to Naruto, to ask him. "Naruto, what are you—"
But Kakashi's hand shot out, gentle but firm, stopping Sai's arm before he could touch Naruto. Kakashi's eyes met Sai's. It was a clear, steady look. 'Don't interfere. Not now.'
"Sai," Kakashi said quietly, his voice low but very sure. "He's completely alright now."
Kakashi's gaze rested on Naruto's back, a look of deep trust in his visible eye. 'The storm inside him has passed. He's thinking. Truly thinking like the Hokage.' He squeezed Sai's arm slightly. "We, the entire village, can trust our Hokage now. Let him work."
Sai looked at Kakashi, then back at Naruto. He was still confused, but Kakashi's calm words and steady gaze made him pause. He pulled his hand back, slowly. 'Rokudaime-sama trusts him... if Rokudaime-sama trusts him, then I should too.' The worry on Sai's face lessened a bit, replaced by a deep curiosity. He watched Naruto, waiting to see what his next move would be.
Naruto just gave a quick, firm nod back. He took a deep breath, and the shinobi quickly performed a series of hand signs: Tiger → Rat → Ram → Snake. His hands moved fast and smoothly. Then, he raised his right hand and gently placed his palm onto Naruto's forehead. A soft, blue glow came from their hands, a sign that the Shin Denshin no Jutsu, the Mind Transmission Jutsu, was starting. Naruto's eyes closed again, but this time, it was clear he was focusing, not losing consciousness.
Kakashi and Sai watched silently. They didn't understand everything, but they trusted Naruto. They could feel a faint, steady energy from the connection.
_OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE - DENSE FOREST_
Far away, in a thick, dark forest, the night was slowly turning into morning. The sky, which was deep black just moments ago, now had soft grey and purple colors spreading across it, promising the sun's rise. The air was cool and heavy with the smell of wet earth and broken trees.
The forest itself was a mess. Trees were broken, ground was torn up, and signs of a huge fight were everywhere. Mud and dirt covered everything. And everyone.
In a small clearing, a group of tired, dirty, and hurt ninja were gathered. They were all covered in mud and dust, their clothes ripped, their skin scratched. Not one of them looked well.
Sakura was there, her medium-length pink hair still sleek but messy with dirt. Her strong body was bent over someone. She wore a dark, tight top with light pants, and a long, white doctor's coat, now stained with mud, hung open. Her hands, usually so neat, were now smeared as she worked.
Next to her was Ino, kneeling, her long, platinum blonde hair tied high but with strands falling loose, covered in dust. A thick part of her hair fell stylishly over her right eye. Her sharp turquoise eyes were focused and worried. She wore a sleek, sleeveless purple crop top and matching capri pants, both dirty. Her dark, high-heeled sandals were caked in mud. She was using her healing power, concentrating hard.
Kiba stood nearby, his brown, shaggy hair and goatee messy with dirt. The two red fang-like marks on his cheeks looked even sharper against his pale, tired face. He wore a thick, long grey coat with shaggy fur, now torn in places, over a black V-neck top. His dark pants and simple black sandals were covered in mud. Every movement seemed to cause a slight wince, and he was clearly favoring one leg, but he looked ready to move, despite his wounds.
Shikamaru was a little further away, his spiky ponytail tied high at the back of his head, now drooping with wet mud. He wore a high-collared, dark outfit, now dusty and torn, with fresh bandages peeking from under his sleeves and collar. He looked tired, but his eyes, though narrowed, were sharp as ever, thinking. He leaned slightly on a broken tree branch for support.
Temari stood near Shikamaru, her face now wet with sudden tears, her blonde hair styled into four distinctive spiky ponytails, now wild and messy. Her sharp, light green eyes were tired and red from worry. Her dark blue kimono-style blouse and matching short skirt were ripped and dirty, and her grey tights were caked with mud. Her big, black folding fan was still on her back, thankfully unharmed.
Hanabi was also there, her dark, straight hair long and loose, now tangled and dusty. Her pale, featureless Byakugan eyes were wide with a mix of exhaustion and distress. Her traditional white kimono blouse with dark lapels and long, flowing sleeves was dirty and ripped. Her long, pleated black skirt was covered in mud, and her shinobi sandals were barely visible beneath the dirt.
As Ino pressed her hands on the Kage she was healing, a soft, buzzing feeling came into her mind. It was the Shin Denshin no Jutsu . She instantly knew it was a contact from her village's sensory network. She focused, her turquoise eyes still partly covered by her fringe, trying to hear past the buzzing.
Then, a voice, strong and clear, filled her thoughts. It was the sensory shinobi. "Ino-san? This is Sensory Unit 7. I have Hokage-sama on the line. He wants to speak with you directly."
Ino blinked, surprised but quickly focused. She still kept her hands on the person she was healing. "Hokage-sama? Right now?" she thought back, a little worried.
Then, Naruto's own voice, clear and calm despite everything, filled her mind. "Ino! Is that you? Are you alright, dattebayo?"
Ino felt a wave of relief, hearing his voice. She still worked her healing jutsu. "Naruto! Yes, I'm here! I'm fine, but it's... it's a mess out here."
She quickly added, "We found the Kages, just like you told us to. Sakura and I are healing them right now. They're pretty beat up."
Naruto's voice came back, steady. "How are they doing? Are they going to be okay?"
"They're alright, Naruto," Ino replied, concentrating. "They're stable, but they're not in good shape. It'll take a lot of time for them to fully recover."
Suddenly, a sharp, loud shout cut through the quiet forest air. "Kankuro! I found him!"
It was Hanabi! Her Byakugan eyes, now fully active, must have seen something through the bushes. She stood a little ways off, pointing with a shaky hand, her voice filled with pure dread.
Shikamaru's head snapped up. "Kankuro?!" he mumbled, his tired eyes widening. He pushed himself forward, a grimace of pain crossing his face as he started to move through the thick bushes. His bandaged body protested with every step, making his movements slow and careful, not a run. Kiba was right behind him, limping noticeably but with grim determination, his own face tight with pain as he pushed through his unhealed wounds.
Temari, her face now wet with sudden tears, immediately tried to follow them, a desperate cry caught in her throat. 'Kankuro...'
"Temari, wait!" Shikamaru's voice was sharp, cutting through the fear. He stopped suddenly, turning and grabbing her arm. "Don't go! We don't know what state he's in! It might be dangerous! Stay here!" He looked at her, his usual lazy calm replaced by urgent command. 'This is too risky. She's too emotional right now.'
Temari stared at him, tears streaming down her dirty face, her body shaking. But she saw the serious look in his eyes. She took a ragged breath and nodded slowly, a silent sob shaking her. She was crying, but she stayed.
As all this happened, Ino's focus broke. Her hands still rested on Gaara, but her mind was pulled away by Hanabi's scream, by Shikamaru's urgency, by Temari's tears.
'Kankuro... oh no...' Her healing chakra flickered, losing its steady flow for a moment.
Then, Naruto's voice, sharper this time, pierced through her distracted thoughts.
"INO!" he yelled, his voice echoing loudly in her mind. He had felt her attention slip.
Ino snapped back to the present. Her turquoise eyes immediately refocused on Gaara, and her healing chakra flowed strong again. She breathed hard. "Naruto? What's the matter?"
"Ino, I need a favor," Naruto's voice came back, firm and very serious. "No, not a favor. I need you to do something. I need you to connect with EVERY shinobi inside the village. All of them. Genin, Chunin, Jonin.
Everyone. Get them all linked to me. Right now."
Ino didn't even think to question him. The tone of his voice, the pure command in his words, told her this was vital. She took a deep breath, pushing past her own exhaustion. 'He must have a plan. A big one.' Without another word, her hands moved from Gaara's body. She closed her eyes, stretched out her mental awareness, and pushed her unique chakra outwards, starting to connect with hundreds of minds across the damaged village.
And, crucially, as Ino pushed her mental network, she made sure to connect Kakashi and Sai to the link as well, bringing them into Naruto's rapidly expanding mental conference.
