Cherreads

Chapter 84 - Chimeras

After sealing two of the 7, I went in search of more of them. It's a bit difficult because the castle keeps moving and changing position, and I don't know where they are. I couldn't find Lucifer in his room, for example.

So I just kept wandering, and incredibly, inside the library I found Samael, the demon of greed.

I know his golden hair and equally golden eyes remind of pure gold, he would practically stand out in the environment immediately if I could see colors, but now everything is just black and white for me.

So, with him being there, he practically blended in with the shelves. I approach him to see a little more about him and try to seal him, I don't think it will be that difficult.

"What are you doing?" I question while he looks at a book about jewels.

"Reading a bit... oh, it's you, the kidnapped princess," he says, closing the book and looking at me, focusing mainly on my physical aspects as if he had a desire to steal something from me and is evaluating what has more value to steal.

"Yes... hey, that jewel on your clothes is very beautiful, want to trade it with me?" I question, seeing the jewel on his clothes and starting a conversation with that.

"Trade? And what would you have of value to trade with me?" He questions with a greedy smile, and with that I realize it will be easy to seal him, because he is a very greedy person.

"I have this beautiful jewel," I say as I take the Prism of Infinite Sides, the object immediately catches Samael's attention as it seems to be a very beautiful and large jewel.

"Where did you get this?" He questions with a huge smile while looking at the prism with interest, probably because it is an object he has never seen and is very beautiful.

"I received it as a gift thanks to Astaroth," I tell him, which is not entirely true in this case, but it's okay as long as he believes it.

"However, it's too big and I have no way to use it as a jewel on my body, I liked the jewel on your clothes and would like it because a princess always has to be beautiful and I lost the bracelet I had with me," I say to him with the best smile I can, even if it's a false one.

"Interesting, let me evaluate your jewel," he says as he quickly takes it from my hand and holds the Prism of Infinite Sides with interest.

"It's quite light, and I don't recognize the ore... you said you got this thanks to Astaroth? Where did he get such a thing?" He questions with enormous interest in the jewel.

"First I want the promised jewel!" I say to him, extending my hand. As soon as he touches my hand, I will use my ability.

"Hmm, of course, I always fulfill my part, but I've heard you're quite lustful, we can make more trades like these if you have valuable things, I believe it's big enough to satisfy you," he says, showing that he really doesn't want to physically trade things with me.

"No thanks, I want the jewel from your clothes for now, maybe in the future," he just sighs while tearing the jewel from his clothes, and as soon as he puts it in my hand, I seal him.

He just disappears from my sight, leaving only the purest silence in the library environment.

"..." As soon as he is sealed, the false smile on my face crumbles as the Prism of Infinite Sides falls to the ground with an intricate sound reminiscent of crystal.

"..." I just put the Prism away as I go after the Librarian to seal him too. I wander through the library looking for him.

I find him in the area with the tables, he's sitting reading a book. I just sit at the table looking at him, trying to start a conversation.

"I saw what you did, but I don't know how you did it. I believe you're here to do the same to me," the Librarian says, and I imagined he had seen it since he always knows where each one is in the library.

"Uhum... aren't you going to do anything?" I question, interested in the reason why he doesn't resist, even knowing that I will do something to him.

"Does it matter?" He says it as a genuine question.

"Maybe," he seems not to know the conditions of my weapon, so I don't say anything that could reveal my weaknesses.

"Why don't you tell the other demon lords? Wouldn't they help you?" I question without understanding why he wouldn't choose this option, he closes the book and sets it aside.

"They wouldn't care what I say as long as I continue to fulfill my duty of guarding the library. Everything here is my responsibility and I have no proof to accuse a 'weak' being like you of defeating one of them," he says, calling me weak.

"So it's arrogance on their part?" I say what I think is the answer.

"It's not exactly arrogance, I'd say, but that's the standard of their existence. They've never had anything that threatened their lives besides the Goddess of Eternity and themselves."

"And by default, anything else is not a threat to them, just as I and Fenrir are nothing to them," the Librarian says as if it's not important.

"Why are you here serving them?" I ask with a bit of curiosity about this.

"I was built to fulfill the duty of guardian of the knowledge in this library. I am bound to this library and cannot go very far... basically I'm trapped here just fulfilling my duty," he really answers me.

"..." With this, I give him a gentle smile. I think this is the life of beings like us, chimeras are built to fulfill a duty without having real rights over what they want.

The life of both of us was defined the moment we were born, but that doesn't change what the Librarian did to me.

"What do you think I did to Samael?" I question to see what he thinks happened, I wonder what he really thinks of what he saw.

"All the mana of the demon lord Samael disappeared similar to the act of being killed, so I think he died from some attack of yours, being evaporated from existence or something similar," the Librarian says, and I think about magic and what I know.

Seals emanate magic, so if someone is sealed, the person's magic still emanates, but the Prism of Infinite Sides does not emanate any magic from the trapped targets.

"So you don't care if I 'kill' you here and now? Is that why you're so calm?" I question with doubt.

"I believe so, the life of a chimera is quite simple, it must continue to fulfill its duty until someone kills it," when the Librarian says this, it bothers me, it means that for him, being killed is having his own freedom.

"You are very lucky..." I say to him with sadness. At least he has the luck to be able to die and thus no longer have to fulfill his duty.

However, my duty as a perfect chimera is precisely not to die, so I will never be able to stop fulfilling this duty.

The Librarian, even if he doesn't get it right one day, will naturally die and stop fulfilling this imposed duty, but I will continue to fulfill mine.

"Can I then do whatever I want?" I question him to be able to choose some good options after he disappears.

"Of course, do whatever you want, it all depends on you anyway," he says without much interest in me.

"Can I take the books from the library for myself after you're gone?" I want the books from this place.

"I believe no one will prevent you, so you can take whatever you want," he responds calmly.

"Okay then." I'll grab all the books and keep them to read over time, and of course, try to learn more about magic, its uses, and what I can do. Besides, if possible, I want to learn more about runes.

"... Can I hold your hand for a farewell from one chimera to another?" I question without sounding suspicious, since if he knows I need to touch him, he could easily contain me.

"Okay," he extends his hand while I hold it and squeeze it firmly. The Prism of Infinite Sides appears in front of us as he quickly disappears from my field of vision.

"..." Without him being here now, everything in the library is mine, so I get up and start stuffing books and more books into the Prism of Infinite Sides. Incredibly, it can serve as an infinite inventory, which is much more convenient than the system.

'Speaking of the system, it still works even without Aurora being around...' This means that now the system is without anyone managing it, working purely automatically.

I wonder if with the authority I have, I can take the system for myself and modify it, but I'll leave that to think about another time. I just start running through the shelves, stuffing books into the Prism of Infinite Sides.
