The black cloud rapidly drifting toward the Rocket base was not made of clouds at all—it was a massive flock of Flying-type Pokémon, forming a dark, oppressive swarm that blotted out the sky.
Most of them were Murkrow, Fearow, and Pidgeotto—types commonly seen among Flying Pokémon.
It was clear these Flying-types came with hostile intent. They seemed to bear deep animosity toward the Team Rocket operatives stationed on the artificial island.
Or perhaps they were under the influence of some kind of power—the bloodthirsty, scarlet glow in their eyes made that possibility hard to ignore.
"Don't just stand there! Get down to the lower base and find cover! No need to panic—this is just a minor-scale beast tide. It'll be over soon."
As the black cloud of Flying-type Pokémon closed in on the Rocket base, Nogu, in a rare gesture, called out to Sato and the others with a word of warning before commanding his Pidgeot to descend rapidly toward the Rocket base.
In truth, if not for the fact that their team leader Nogu had yet to make a move—and they dared not overstep—Sato and the other sharp-eyed Rocket recruits would've already fled.
Now, with his signal, Sato and the others scrambled to urge their flying mounts down toward the Team Rocket base, landing and seeking shelter at breakneck speed.
By this point, multiple squads of Rocket members were emerging from various exits of the base, marching in orderly formation.
Just like the elite Team Rocket operatives Sato had seen earlier from the sky, these members exuded a disciplined, militaristic aura.
Under the leadership of their commanding officers, they moved swiftly and in sync. Before long, three square-shaped battle formations of over a hundred members each had formed outside the Team Rocket base.
These three main battalions were arranged in a triangle around the base, protecting it from all sides. In addition to the large formations, scattered mid- and small-sized units filled in the defensive gaps around the facility.
Once fully assembled, these Rocket members—like seasoned soldiers—began releasing Pokémon under the command of their squad leaders.
Each square formation deployed a single species of Pokémon.
These Pokémon had all undergone rigorous training. As soon as they emerged, they assembled on their own like veterans of countless battles.
In moments, the field was home to three massive formations: one composed entirely of Magnezone, one of Alolan Golem, and one of Electrode.
(Note: Alolan Golem is the final evolution of Alolan Geodude, a dual Rock/Electric-type. Due to Alola's unique climate, standard Geodude undergo mutation and evolve differently.)
"Magnezone Army and Electrode Army—commence assault!!"
As the three Pokémon legions finished assembling, a one-eyed Rocket executive in a commander's uniform lifted a megaphone and barked out orders.
"Zap Cannon!!"
"Electro Ball!!"
The next moment, two of the large formations—the Magnezone and Electrode units—instantly obeyed. All their trainers shouted the same move command in unison.
Hundreds of Pokémon launching the same move at once triggered a breathtaking, earth-shattering reaction. The destructive force they unleashed was overwhelming.
The Magnezone legion on the left flank of the triangle formation struck first. Hundreds of Magnezone fired Zap Cannon in unison, filling the sky with blinding electromagnetic beams.
Under the influence of magnetic fields and their collective precision, the beams converged into a single, colossal energy cannon.
The massive electromagnetic blast shot forward at incredible speed. It cleaved through the sky like a blade of lightning, splitting the dense black swarm of Flying-type Pokémon in half.
In the blink of an eye, the air was thick with the smell of scorched feathers and ozone.
"That's insane… This kind of standardized Pokémon legion is practically a weapon of war."
Watching from behind cover, Sato was stunned into silence as he witnessed the Magnezone unit's overwhelming power. His eyes widened with awe.
Meanwhile, the Electrode formation on the right flank began its own fierce attack. Electricity surged across hundreds of them, and one after another, they launched yellow orbs of energy—each the size of a soccer ball—into the sky.
In an instant, the sky filled with a torrential rain of glowing Electro Balls.
With a base Speed stat of 150, Electrode was among the fastest Electric-type Pokémon. Most Flying-types couldn't hope to outrun them.
As such, the barrage of Electro Balls was devastating to the airborne attackers—each projectile carried a base power exceeding 80.
(Note: Electro Ball is a Special Electric-type move. The faster the user is compared to the target, the stronger the attack.)
Under the relentless assault from hundreds of Electrodes, Flying-type Pokémon dropped from the sky like rain-soaked leaves.
Within three or four seconds, the majority of the Pokémon that had made it within 100 meters of the base were eliminated.
However, this first wave was only the vanguard of the "black cloud." A second wave of Flying-types swiftly followed.
Even under such intense fire from the Magnezone and Electrode legions, the crimson-eyed Pokémon showed no fear, hurling themselves at the base with savage ferocity.
Following the one-eyed commander's lead, the Magnezone unit focused on breaking enemy formations, while the Electrode unit provided wide-range suppressive fire.
With their fierce bombardment and the support of Rocket Pokémon from various smaller units, the two main legions successfully crushed six waves of Flying-type attackers—wiping out more than half the invading force.
However, the non-stop discharge of electricity began to wear down both the Magnezone and Electrode armies. Their output weakened as they grew visibly fatigued.
Without sustained firepower, the remaining Flying-types—still numbering in the hundreds—broke through the defensive line and closed in, breaching the 30-meter mark outside the Rocket base.
"Alolan Golem unit, prepare for battle! Commence attack!!"
At that moment, the one-eyed Rocket commander, estimating that the enemy had entered optimal striking range, gave the long-awaited order to the final legion—Alolan Golem.
"Rock Blast!!"
Instantly, the Rocket members in the Alolan Golem unit issued the same command to their Pokémon.
Hundreds of Alolan Golem, positioned at the spearhead of the triangular formation, launched volley after volley of rock-sized projectiles from their backs—each one crackling with electromagnetic energy.
A storm of electrically charged stones rained down upon the advancing Flying-types.
As dual Rock/Electric-types, Alolan Golem's attacks not only struck with Rock-type force but also carried electric charges.
It was easy to imagine the devastation: any Flying-type hit would suffer double punishment—from both types.
The assault successfully halted the enemy advance.
Yet despite their raw power, the Alolan Golem unit couldn't match the firing frequency of the Electrode legion.
Before long, numerous wild Flying-types from the island's interior broke through and took to the skies directly above the Rocket base.
A brutal, close-quarters battle to defend the base was about to erupt.
