Chapter 3 - Chapter 2 : Ascian II

As Gabriel and the priest exited the alley, they found themselves in the quiet park, the night air heavy with tension. Suddenly, a dark figure loomed taller than the street lamps, casting an eerie shadow. Without warning, all the lights flickered and went out, plunging them into darkness. Only one light remained, illuminating the figure for a brief moment before it too extinguished, leaving them in total blackness.

"What's happening?" Gabriel asked, panic rising in his throat.

"Do not move, Gabriel," the priest commanded firmly, his voice steady. "Stay by my side."

A thick fog began to roll in, obscuring their surroundings, and Gabriel could feel his heart racing. Out of the darkness, a dark shape darted past him, fast and barely visible. "What was that?" he exclaimed, instinctively stepping closer to the priest.

"Stay calm," the priest urged, positioning his claymore in front of him, ready to defend. Gabriel looked up at him, awe washing over him as he noticed the priest's composure. The way he held the sword and steadied his stance was both inspiring and reassuring.

Suddenly, shadows swirled around the priest like a tempest, the darkness pressing in on them. With a swift motion, the priest swung his sword, and Gabriel held his breath. He saw the blade slice through the air, the sound of steel meeting something dark echoing in the night. The figure shifted to the left, but the priest had struck, although it was unclear where the blow landed.

Gabriel watched intently, marveling at the priest's calm demeanor amidst the chaos."How can he stay so composed?" he thought, his admiration growing. The priest seemed to sense the presence of the dark figure, his body poised and ready for whatever came next.

"Stay close, Gabriel!" the priest shouted as the shadows seemed to pulse and throb, trying to envelop them both. Gabriel took a deep breath, focusing on the priest's movements and trying to mirror his strength and steadiness, knowing he had to stand firm in the face of this new terror.

As the dark figure began to turn its focus toward Gabriel, the priest shouted, "Watch out!" He sprinted toward Gabriel, positioning himself as a shield between the boy and the impending danger.

In that moment, the creature lunged, its movements swift and feral. Gabriel gasped as he saw the priest absorb the blow meant for him. The creature's claws raked across the priest's side, leaving deep, angry scars that sliced through the fabric of his robe.

The priest staggered for a moment but quickly regained his footing. He faced the creature with fierce determination, a slight grin on his face despite the injury. "Is that all you can do?" he taunted, his voice steady even in the face of danger.

Gabriel's heart raced as he watched the creature. It stood before them, its body long and skinny, a twisted form that seemed to meld into the darkness around it. Its face was split in a grotesque manner, showcasing a shark-like mouth filled with jagged teeth that glinted in the faint light. The creature exuded a sense of malevolence, its presence suffocating and terrifying.

As it prepared to strike again, Gabriel felt a mixture of fear and awe. He looked at the priest, who stood tall, his claymore raised and ready to defend them both. The contrast between the priest's bravery and the creature's horror was stark, and in that moment, Gabriel understood the gravity of the situation.

"Stay behind me!" the priest commanded, raising his sword as the creature lunged forward, ready to attack again. Gabriel pressed against the wall of the park, heart pounding, knowing he had to trust the priest's strength and experience to protect him from the horrors lurking in the dark.

As the priest swung his claymore to intercept the creature, he managed to cut its belly, but the beast's momentum was too great. "Dang it, I missed!" he shouted in frustration. Just then, Gabriel heard a sickening crack from the priest's back, and the priest grimaced. "Oh dang it, I'm getting old for this," he muttered, a hint of pain in his voice.

The creature, undeterred, lunged at them again. With a swift motion, it swatted at the priest with one powerful hand, pushing him back with surprising strength. Gabriel gasped, panic surging through him. "Father!" he shouted, fear creeping into his voice as he watched the priest struggle to regain his balance.

The priest, breathing heavily, managed to stand tall again. "I'll be fine! Stay at my back!" he instructed, determination lacing his words. Gabriel nodded, though worry gnawed at him. He wanted to help, but he knew he had to trust the priest's experience.

As the creature advanced once more, the priest steadied his grip on the sword, his resolve hardening. Gabriel moved behind him, feeling both anxious and inspired by the priest's unwavering courage. "We can do this," he whispered to himself, drawing strength from the priest's example.

With a battle cry, the priest swung his sword again, the blade slicing through the air toward the creature. Gabriel could see the sweat glistening on the priest's brow, and he hoped that together, they could overcome this formidable foe.

As Gabriel crouched in the corner, a sudden memory struck him—the chain he had used back in the alley was still wrapped around his arm. Inspiration sparked within him, and he realized he could use it to help the priest. "I got a plan!" he shouted, his voice filled with newfound determination.

Just then, the creature lunged forward, eyes gleaming with bloodlust. Gabriel quickly swung the chain, aiming to ensnare the creature's arm. With a swift motion, he managed to wrap it around one of its limbs. The priest, recognizing Gabriel's intent, took advantage of the opening and delivered a precise slice with his claymore, severing the creature's hand.

But the victory was short-lived. The creature's other hand swung toward Gabriel with lethal intent. "Watch out!" the priest shouted, and Gabriel barely managed to dive out of the way, tumbling to the ground.

"You bastard!" the priest yelled, his frustration boiling over. He swung his sword at the creature's head, but the creature, fueled by rage, grabbed the blade with its remaining hand and bit down hard. The metal groaned under the pressure, and the priest struggled to hold on, feeling his stamina waning.

In a moment of desperation, the priest turned to Gabriel, who was still trying to recover from his fall. "Stand up, Gabriel!" he shouted, urgency lacing his voice. "We need to finish this!"

Gabriel shook off his shock and scrambled to his feet, adrenaline coursing through him. He could see the struggle between the priest and the creature, and he knew this was their moment to act. With the chain still in his hands, he took a deep breath, focusing on the task at hand.

"Together!" Gabriel called out, his heart racing as he prepared to do whatever it took to help the priest defeat this dark menace once and for all.

With determination coursing through him, Gabriel pushed through the pain the creature had inflicted on him and stepped forward to help the priest. He clutched the chain tightly, using it to pull the creature away from the priest. In a desperate move, he managed to tie one end of the chain to the nearest street lamp, anchoring it securely.

As the creature realized it was trapped, it let go of the priest's sword, fury flashing in its twisted eyes. It lunged toward Gabriel, but the priest was ready. With swift precision, he stabbed the creature again, driving his blade deep into its body and pinning it to the ground.

"Hold it down with the chain!" the priest commanded, urgency in his voice. Gabriel nodded, rushing forward to wrap the chain around the creature's struggling form, securing it as tightly as he could.

Once the creature was restrained, the priest took a step back, his expression serious. He pulled out a worn Bible from his robe, flipping through its pages with purpose. "Saint Michael, protector of the weak, I call upon your strength!" he shouted, his voice rising above the creature's furious growls.

As the priest began to chant the prayers, the creature writhed in agony, thrashing against its bonds. Gabriel felt a wave of heat emanating from the creature, as if it were being burned from the inside out. The air around them crackled with energy as the priest invoked the name of the archangel, each word resonating with power.

"By the grace of God, I command you to leave this realm!" the priest proclaimed, his voice booming with authority.

The creature let out a terrible shriek, its body convulsing violently. Gabriel watched in awe as flames began to engulf the creature, its dark form starting to dissolve into ash. The agonized cries echoed around them, and he instinctively stepped back, heart pounding in his chest.

As the last remnants of the creature crumbled into nothingness, the night fell silent, save for the sound of their heavy breathing. Gabriel stood there, shaken but relieved, glancing at the priest, who lowered his Bible with a weary but victorious expression.

"It's over," the priest said softly, a hint of a smile breaking through his exhaustion. Gabriel felt a rush of gratitude and admiration for the man who had fought so bravely to protect him, knowing that together they had faced unimaginable darkness and emerged victorious.

As the echoes of the creature's cries faded into the night, Gabriel and the priest shared a moment of relief and disbelief. They both burst into laughter, the sound bright and buoyant against the backdrop of the quiet plaza. It was an unexpected reaction, but after the intensity of the battle, it felt good to release the tension that had built up within them.

"Can you believe we actually did that?" Gabriel said, still chuckling as he sank down onto the steps of the plaza. He looked over at the priest, who wiped the sweat from his brow and sat beside him, a grin spreading across his face.

"It was quite the adventure, wasn't it?" the priest replied, his voice warm with amusement. "Not how I usually spend my evenings, I assure you."

Gabriel leaned back against the cool stone, letting out a sigh of contentment. "I never thought I'd be fighting monsters tonight. I mean, I've read about this stuff, but experiencing it… wow!"

The priest nodded, chuckling softly. "It's a lot to take in. But you held your own out there, Gabriel. You showed a lot of courage tonight."

Gabriel felt a rush of pride at the compliment. "I just did what I had to do. I couldn't let you face that thing alone."

The priest looked thoughtful for a moment, then turned to Gabriel with a serious expression. "What you did with that chain—using your resourcefulness to help in a moment of crisis—that's what makes a true protector. You've got a gift, my boy."

Gabriel felt a warmth spread through him at the priest's words. "Thanks. I just hope I never have to use it like that again."

The two sat in companionable silence for a moment, letting the weight of the night settle around them. The stars twinkled above, and the cool breeze felt refreshing against their skin.

"Do you think the others at the orphanage are worried?" Gabriel asked after a while, glancing at the darkened street where they had come from.

The priest chuckled again. "They might be wondering where their fearless leader has gone. Perhaps we should head back before they send a search party."

Gabriel laughed, nodding. "Yeah, I wouldn't want to scare them with stories of monsters and battles just yet."

As they both stood up, brushing off their clothes, Gabriel felt a sense of camaraderie with the priest that he had never experienced before. This night had changed them both, forging a bond that would last long after the darkness had been vanquished. Together, they walked back toward the orphanage, hearts lighter and spirits lifted.
