Wade was pulled out of his thoughts when a hand fell on his head. Slowly, he looked up to see that his stepmother was the one whose hand was upon his head.
His heart pounded fiercely, and he was left staring up at her.
Charlotte awkwardly patted his head; something her parents and family would always do to comfort her whenever she was feeling under the weather.
"Do not listen to her."
Wade's eyelashes trembled and he nodded. He suddenly felt his eyes sting. He felt like crying. Tears welled up in his eyes against his will.
He hadn't cried when those children surrounded him and bullied him and told him he wasn't allowed to play with them because his mother was a prostitute.
He hadn't cried when his mother spewed hateful words at him.
He also hadn't cried when noble children told him he wasn't worthy of being among them because he was a commoner and lowly son of a mistress.
