She rested a hand on his arm, her touch light but firm. "You're not alone, okay? I know you're not what they think."
Alex nodded, her words noted but not something he leaned into. "Yeah, thanks," he said, his tone even. "Let's get out of here. Your place sounds better than this."
Velenda's grin returned, and she hooked her arm through his. "You'll love it," she said, pulling him along. "Come on, the market's overrated."
