Spencer blinked, still caught off guard at the sight.
The boy looked vaguely familiar. Dark hair, sharp chin—there was something about the eyes.
But before he could make any connection, Sir Robert glanced up mid-sentence and spotted Spencer. The warmth in his face didn't vanish, but it shifted and cooled slightly. "Ah," he said, closing the book. "Look who's finally decided to visit." Spencer stepped further into the room, masking his surprise behind a carefully constructed smile. "I came to see you," he said, eyes fixed on the child in Sir Robert's lap. "Wasn't expecting... company."
He gestured subtly toward the boy, "Who's the kid?"
Sir Robert paused and studied Spencer for a long moment, then ran a hand over the boy's head. "Spencer," he said quietly, "this is your younger brother."
Spencer blinked.
His stomach twisted, but he held his expression. "I'm sorry—what?"
The boy beamed up at him. "Hello, big brother!" he chirped, waving enthusiastically. "I'm Adir!"
