The black SUV roared down the driveway like a predator that had just locked onto its prey.
Sophia barely had time to react.
Her mouth fell open in horror, and a piercing scream ripped from her throat. "Ahhh!"
Her thoughts screamed at her to move, to run—but her legs turned to water, utterly useless. Her high heels wobbled, then gave way entirely.
Thud.
She collapsed onto the ground in a heap, stunned, her skirt riding up as she fell gracelessly onto the pavement. Her entire body trembled like a brittle leaf caught in a gale.
The SUV came barreling closer, headlights glowing with menace. Every inch that it advanced sucked the breath out of her lungs.
Panic surged through her like wildfire.
She squeezed her eyes shut, expecting the pain, the crash, the unbearable crush of bone and metal. Her imagination filled in the blanks—blood, agony, maybe even death. Is this how it ends?
