"Mr. Porter."
Mrs. Porter turned to prepare tea for him, her movements practiced and effortless.
"Let's talk."
"About what?
What could we possibly have to discuss—"
Mr. Porter barely started speaking before Mrs.
Porter cut him off.
"I'm willing to leave the Porter family and relinquish my position as Mrs. Porter."
At these words, the deep furrow between Mr. Porter's brows smoothed out, his eyes widening in disbelief.
"You... what did you just say?"
"I said," Mrs Porter paused her tea-making and met his gaze, her usually gentle eyes now carrying an unsettling calm.
"I'm willing to do as you wish—step down as Mrs. Porter."
"Really?"
Mr. Porter took the teacup from her, studying her face with suspicion.
This woman had clung stubbornly to her title before, refusing to let go.
"Why the sudden change of heart?"
"After all these years as husband and wife, am I really so unworthy of your trust?"
