Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: A Baffling Command

Even though Silas had Zero and had studied skill mechanics for so long and even though he came from a previous life filled with information overload, wild imaginations, and all sorts of creative thinking he still hadn't modified many moves to make them more effective or powerful.

He just had a lot of whimsical ideas. Sometimes, they came in handy. Daisy's current modification, for instance… well, it was pretty decent for watering plants.

Modifying moves might sound simple on the surface, but making them more efficient than the original version was incredibly difficult. Success wasn't guaranteed, and a failed attempt could just end up wasting time.

After all, Pokémon weren't mindless creatures acting solely on instinct. They had thoughts of their own and weren't that different from humans in terms of intellect.

If modifying a move were that easy, they could probably figure it out on their own.

Back on the battlefield, Blaziken used Heat Wave. The hot wind it released was so intense that it visibly distorted the air in front of it with a reddish glow.

As it clashed with the incoming wave of water, the two forces rapidly began to cancel each other out.

Much of the lingering Heat Wave hadn't dissipated and instead struck the water's surface, raising the water temperature and thickening the mist.

The battlefield fell into a moment of quiet tension.

Daisy was still trying to figure out how to get her Goldeen to effectively attack Blaziken. At this rate, it was proving difficult to wear it down.

Silas, on the other hand, wore a strange expression this was way too easy.

He had made thorough preparations, knowing full well how severe the type disadvantage was and how many unfavorable conditions he was dealing with. But… this was it?

He had anticipated some resistance, but Daisy hadn't made a single proper move.

Well, if that's how it was going to be, he wouldn't hold back.

"Thunder Punch," Silas commanded.

Daisy was startled. Her Goldeen wasn't even on the water's surface. How could Blaziken hit it with Thunder Punch?

If it dipped its hand into the water to try and conduct electricity, Blaziken would get hurt too. Not to mention, that would be a perfect chance for Goldeen to counterattack and inflict serious damage.

But then she saw Blaziken's claws crackle with electricity and it suddenly swung its arms forward with great force.

"Zzzzzaaap—!"

The electric current detached from Blaziken's claws and shot into the misty battlefield.

The moment it hit the mist, yellow lightning surged across the entire field.

Silas, having expected this, quickly pulled out a pair of sunglasses and put them on. The referee, also experienced, fumbled for his own pair after getting momentarily blinded.

Only Daisy stood there wide-eyed, blinded by the white flash. She couldn't see a thing. The crackling of electricity made it hard to hear too.

In the chaos, faint, pained cries from Goldeen echoed out.

Blaziken didn't pause. One electrified strike after another lashed out, and Goldeen's cries grew louder with each one.

Then, all at once, the cries stopped.

Silas signaled for Blaziken to halt. This was a Gym battle, not the wild. If things went too far, who knew what might happen?

Daisy breathed a sigh of relief and anxious looked toward the field.

As the ventilation fans kicked in, the thick mist quickly dispersed. Floating motionless on the water's surface was Goldeen belly up, eyes spinning.

"Goldeen is unable to battle! Blaziken wins! Daisy, please send out your next Pokémon!" the referee announced, raising his flag.

Daisy reluctantly returned Goldeen to its Poké Ball, clearly unwilling to accept how sudden her loss had been.

Unable to suppress her curiosity, she turned to Silas and asked, "How did you get Blaziken to release Thunder Punch like that? It's not even an Electric-type Pokémon. That shouldn't be possible."

Silas looked toward the referee as if to say, "Aren't we not supposed to talk during battles? You're not going to stop this?"

But the referee kept his expression neutral, eyes fixed forward like he hadn't seen Silas's glance.

Come on. Sure, he was sent by the League to oversee the match, but the person actually paying him was the Cerulean Gym. And that girl on the other side? She was the Cerulean Gym's heiress.

This kind of casual question wasn't technically against the rules. Officially, the League discouraged pointless chatter during matches but only in tournaments. This was a Gym match, which also served as a teaching opportunity. A bit of dialogue was perfectly normal.

Wearing his sunglasses, the referee's face remained emotionless, showing no reaction like a robot.

Seeing Daisy stubbornly refuse to send out her next Pokémon unless she got an answer, Silas had no choice but to explain.

"Actually, it's not that complicated. It just looks flashy, but the actual power isn't that high.

If the base power of Thunder Punch is a 1, then the power of the externally released lightning is at most 0.2.

The method starts with practicing with Fire Punch, a move of the same type, by controlling the flames to separate from the fists for long-range attacks.

Then you apply the same technique to Thunder Punch, and the lightning can be released externally.

It's just that this method has limited applicability. If not for the conductive mist and water, and the fact that Goldeen becomes sluggish in high temperatures and had already lost some stamina, even if electricity is super effective against it, it still takes a while to wear it down.

Also, under normal circumstances, if Goldeen hadn't dived so deep, Blaziken wouldn't have had the opportunity to unleash so many Thunder Punches."

Daisy gave a slight nod. So that was how it worked. It really did sound simple.

Of course, Silas only made it sound easy. In truth, it's extremely difficult for Pokémon to manipulate the energy of a different type than their own and release it externally.

If it weren't for Blaziken's exceptional talent and the conceptual similarity with Fire Punch this technique would've been nearly impossible to pull off.

Otherwise, Blaziken would've already learned the Grass-type move Solar Beam, which would have made the battle against the Cerulean Gym much easier.

"Then my next Pokémon is this one—go, Dewgong!"

"Gwaah~!"

A snow-white sea lion Pokémon appeared on the field, with a sharp horn on its head and two downward-pointing fangs near its mouth. It let out a cry.

"Use Aqua Jet! Charge straight ahead with everything you've got!"

Daisy was once again full of confidence.

Silas didn't even want to comment on Daisy's commands anymore. Whatever—taking it easy wasn't so bad.

If it were him, even if he wanted to charge in, he would've gone with a combination of Surf and Waterfall instead of Aqua Jet.

And seriously why rush in like that? You're using a Water/Ice-type Dewgong against a Fire/Fighting-type Blaziken. Engaging in close combat? Even if you have moves like Aqua Tail or Megahorn, it's totally unnecessary. The type matchup is against you.

He instructed Blaziken to counter with Fire Spin.

Dewgong surged forward at low altitude, wrapped in water, charging directly toward Blaziken.

The red swirling flames and the blue water, with the white Dewgong in the center, collided midair.

"Boom!"
