Derrick's POV
I turned to Anita standing by the side. Nathan had walked away a few seconds ago. The disappointment in his eyes as he turned to me, silently pleading for me to say something, haunted me.
Why didn't I say anything?
"Why would you think sending him to the border was a good idea?"
Anita gave me a look of sheer confusion, her eyebrows raised in innocence. "Was it not a good idea?"
"It wasn't."
"Then why didn't you say anything?" she inquired. "You could have easily refused my words and sent him somewhere else, but you didn't. Instead, you were quietly standing there watching him beg you."
I turned away from her. I glanced at the table, but the glass of whiskey I had kept there was empty. My frown deepened.
"Excuse me."
"Where are you going?" She held me back by my arm.
"I can't quite do this right now, Anita." I massaged my temples. "I need to step away."
