Then Victor turned to Irina, eyes pleading.
"Mom?"
And then he turned towards his dad, Leonard.
"Dad?"
"Can I have sleepovers at Cesar's house? It's gonna be so much fun! We're gonna play games..." he turned back to Cesar, "...we'll eat junk food!"
"Yes, we will eat junk food," Victor nodded solemnly.
"We'll stay up late!" Victor added, his voice rising with every sentence. He was getting more excited by the minute.
"We'll stay up late," Cesar echoed, clearly enjoying the rhythm of their little pact.
Victor bounced in his seat. "Right, Mom? Right, Dad? Please?"
My mother turned to Leonard. Her expression was unreadable, but her eyes said, Your call.
"I don't know about that, kiddo," Leonard said, glancing toward Victor with that tone.... the one that always meant no.
