The four of them traveled together and arrived at Whirlpool Shinobi Village.
This was a ninja village founded by the Uzumaki Clan within the Land of Whirlpools. Akio remembered it being called Uzushiogakure in the original story, but he had always thought that name sounded terrible, so he suggested naming it Uzonin Village instead. Not that it sounded much better...
Compared to Konoha, Uzonin Village was pitifully smallâonly about one-fifth its size. Civilians didn't live here; it was purely a settlement for shinobi. The Uzumaki Clan also didn't accept missions from outside, relying solely on internal requests from the Land of Whirlpools. Over the years, this had fostered a mutually beneficial and self-sustaining relationship between the village and the country.
Akio had only visited a few times over the past decade, spending most of his time living by the sea, always on alert for raids from Kumogakure and Kirigakure.
But it was clear that Kumogakure no longer had the resources to target the Uzumaki Clan. As for Kirigakure, they had sent two teams of shinobi in the beginningâbut Akio had made sure they vanished without a trace. In recent years, they seemed to have given up.
"Great-Grandfather, I know it's not the first time I've seen it, but Uzonin Village is truly spectacular! I almost want to live here!" Tsunade exclaimed in awe.
"This is the Uzonin Village you were talking about? Doesn't seem all that impressiveâŠ" Jiraiya muttered nearbyâbut his voice trailed off as he spoke.
Akio's previous life hadn't been wealthy, but he had his dreams. He would often flip through magazines to admire scenic villas, fantasizing about buying one of his own someday.
But that dream had ended when he crossed over into the Naruto world.
Years passed in a blur, and he had almost forgotten about itâuntil Uzonin Village was founded. That's when Akio finally remembered and designed some "beautiful" villas.
Though lacking in modern furnishings, they exuded a distinct, classical charm.
"Great-Grandfather?" Tsunade asked curiously, noticing Akio hadn't responded for a while.
"Ah, nothing. Of course it's magnificentâI designed it myself!" Akio replied proudly.
But his earlier silence had been due to a more serious thought.
"Whose rumor was it that tricked me? I really believed Orochimaru pursued immortality because of his parents' death. But with his personality, he would've taken that path no matter what⊠I even took the initiative to tempt him. Looks like I've gotten myself into trouble."
Akio didn't really think Orochimaru could learn much from studying his cellsâhis strength came mostly from the system. Still, the whole thing left him feeling uneasy.
"With my current power, there's almost no one in the shinobi world who could even hurt me. It should be fine⊠just need to stay cautious."
Lady Nanako!" Tsunade's sudden call jolted Akio back to reality.
"Nanako? What brings you to the village?"
Since the Land of Whirlpools had been founded, Nanako had lived in the palace built by Genkai and served as the daimyo's wife.
"Sensei, Izuko and I were just on our way to find you." Nanako beamed with happiness, her joy catching Akio off guard.
"Uh⊠what's going on? You look so excited."
"My granddaughter was just born!"
Akio blinked and looked more closely at Nanako.
"Really?" he sighed. "Without realizing it, Nanako's nearly fifty now⊠Immortality, huh."
In a daze, he recalled attending his grandnephew's funeral six years agoâthe last of the younger generation in the clan. From that day on, even the oldest members had to call him 'Grandfather.'
"You and Izuko go check on our little princess of the Land of Whirlpools. I'll go find Hiruzenâhe seems to have brought a message from Tobirama," Akio said after a moment's hesitation.
Nanako looked a bit disappointed. "Sensei, little Kushina is so adorableâŠ"
Akio froze. "What did you name your granddaughter?"
"Kushina. Uzumaki Kushina. Is there something wrong, Sensei?"
Akio took a deep breath. "Nothing at all. That's a perfect name. Let's go see her together!"
"Great-Grandfather, Hiruzen-sensei is still waiting for usâŠ" Tsunade reminded him softly.
"He can wait! Let's go, Nanako, Izuko!"
With that, Akio strode off, leaving the three young Sannin stunned. Nanako and Izuko followed behind with wry smiles.
"Tsunade⊠your Great-Grandfather feels kind of unreliableâŠ" Jiraiya started to whisperâbut was suddenly struck in the forehead by a pebble from who-knows-where.
"What the hellâhow does he have ears that sharp at that age⊠ow!"
A second pebble hit the exact same spot. Jiraiya clutched his head and crouched down in pain, eyes watering.
"IdiotâŠ" came Orochimaru's hoarse voice, too tired to even argue.
Tsunade looked helplessly at her two teammates, then glanced at the distant Akio and sighed before running to catch up.
"Idiot. Let's go," Orochimaru said to Jiraiya, then followed after her.
It took a moment for Jiraiya to recover. As the cold wind blew, he looked around.
"Did I just get abandonedâŠ"
Meanwhile, Akio's pace quickened. Izuko and Nanako had to jog to keep up.
"Sensei, there's no need to rush!"
But Akio didn't respond. His mind was entirely preoccupied with Kushina's birth.
"Another plot character has been bornâone of the most important, no less⊠and she's Nanako's granddaughter? That would make me her great-grandfather, wouldn't it? Wait, doesn't that make her Tsunade's niece? Naruto and Tsunade are in the same generation then⊠guess I'll have to tell him to stop calling her GrannyâŠ"
Then Akio paused, a realization hitting him. "What about Minato? He's Jiraiya's student⊠meaning from my perspective, he's of the same generation.
That thought almost made him laugh out loud.
"The hierarchy in Naruto has always been a mess anyway. Minato's student took in Minato's son as a student, and Minato's teacher also took in his son. It's like a tongue-twister⊠Now with me in the mix, it's even worse. Forget it!"
"But waitâin the original story, Kushina wasn't a princess of the Land of Whirlpools, was she? Who was the daimyo back then, anyway? Living under these conditions, would Kushina still grow up to be the same hothead?" Akio sighed, feeling a bit melancholic.
The group quickly reached the daimyo's palace.
"Great-Grandfather!" Behind him, Tsunade and Orochimaru had finally caught up.
"Come on, let's go in together."
Elsewhere, the abandoned Jiraiya sat alone, looking dazed. Before long, a figure approached from the distanceâit was Hiruzen Sarutobi.
"Jiraiya? Why are you alone? Where's Tsunade and Orochimaru? Didn't you go looking for Elder Akio?" Three questions fired off in a row.
Jiraiya nodded, then shook his head⊠and finally lowered his head in defeat.
Hiruzen stared at him, utterly confused.
