A pot came flying in the boy's direction,he dodged it,unfortunately there was a rolling pin doubling as a missile which had locked onto his location. It struck him wonderfully on the nose breaking it.The impact fazed him as he placed the sleeve of his torn shirt on his face to block the stream of blood. He backed himself into a corner.A pot-bellied man approached him with a metallic bat in hand.He was fuming and full of rage.
''You useless scum, what do you mean no ability.I have invested two weeks into you trying to mould you into a child with a future and this is how you pay me back!Failure of your generation!!''The man bellowed.
He then rushed forward to hit the kid.The child waited until the last second before jumping to the side. The man missed but his bat did not.It connected beautifully with the kid's ribs breaking at least four of them.He spat out blood ,'run' he thought. The kid scrambled to get back to his feet and move before the same repeated itself.
His path was blocked by an imposing figure,it was not the man.It was someone much worse, his wife. The boy sighed and braced himself for the inevitable. There was no escaping reality.Like clockwork a pan delivered a glancing blow to his temple.
''Ungrateful monkey ,have you no shame?''She asked hoisting her pan upready to deliver another blow. There was no point in the struggle at the moment. It was clear that the boy was staggering, his death was imminent. There was no avoiding it.He was on the floor desperately crawling away.He grabbed a blanket and pulled himself to an upright position. He saw a window ,there was hope.
He mustered some strength. There would be no other chance if he got this wrong. It all depended on what he would do now.He propelled himself forward. He crashed through the window while simultaneously wrapping himself with the blanket. Then he fell .It was a drop of about five metres.
Luckily for him,it had been snowing so he landed with a soft thud on the white cushion below. However,he was not safe yet.He forced himself up ,he had to run.It was the only way to survive. So with a blanket pressed onto his body as protection from the cold,he ran as fast as he could with his battered, bruised and broken body .No destination was in mind, anywhere would be fine,as long as it was not there.
The man and his wife shouted some curses that were a bit too salty for mention. The boy ran, hopefully he wold never see those two again in his life.Unfortunately for him, that would not be a long time.A trail of scarlet in the white snow indicated that it would be over for him soon.It also indicated the direction he was fleeing to.It was the woods at the edge of the settlement.
Theiss kept running, though it was proving to be a struggle. His injuries were bad.Blood was seeping through his clothes. His blanket was almost soaked through. His ten years of life were literally hell.H'ed always survived somehow. However at this moment the probability of him doing so was really low.
It began to snow as he ventured into the forest. It was now certain that his survival was highly improbable. The forest was eerie and silent, just how he liked it.He sat under a pine tree and breathed out.The air which was icy stung his respiratory tract. That was however the least of his troubles. He sat down and began thinking about his life.
He only remembered his life from when he was eight.Beyond that he could recall nothing no matter how much he he tried. All he knew was that his name was Theiss. He was raised in an orphanage that was really a church.
He never felt any inclination towards the gods.In fact, strangely,he despised them.He however stayed in the church to acquire information and thus learnt that this place was known as Eliel.A world that believed in ten gods.He also learnt that he was part of a supposed blessed generation.
In this world there was a power force known as prima. This gave people magic in the form of the basic elements.Only two sets of ages born ten years apart were different.Instead of magic they had special abilities. They also had acore which was known as a lycra. This is where they drew their prima from. The first generation had been born with their abilities while the second ,which,Theiss was in were to acquire their abilities at the age of ten.
''The abilities and magic are a gift from the gods'',he could vaguely remember a particular nun say.He had personally never been fascinated by any of the gods.It was a load of crap. That was his opinion. He wondered why people were so delusional.Praying to beings who were not concerned about their welfare, utter foolishness.Their stupidity even went as far as making the gods an aspect of their greetings. It was custom to greet people saying 'may the grace of the gods be with you'.Theiss found it ridiculous that people believed that they were alive due to the grace of non-existent beings. To him, these were foolish ramblings of the many stupid people who tried to authenticate injustice through the existence of all-powerful beings who weave the threads of fate.
His situation at the moment was an example of such. Here he was about to die while someone else was somewhere living lavishly. Not that he objected,he could not wait to die.He would just close his eyes and let the cold winter embrace welcome him to the other side.A peaceful death was all he wanted. This was not to be so as fate still had games to play with him even at the hour of death. He heard soft thuds approaching .Theiss looked around to trace the source of the footfalls.Judging from their intensity he could tell that whatever was coming was approaching rapidly.A huge deer leapt into the clearing clearly agitated .Theiss was in awe of the beast. It was understandable given the size of the deer and the rainbow colour of its pelt.
He heard a howl then another one then another. All he around him wolves howled making the deer even more restless.''Damn it!''he said out loud.So much for a quiet death.A pack of seven Arlan wolves leapt on the agitated deer clamping onto it with their powerful jaws giving their white surrounding some touch of scarlet.Theiss watched as the wolves ,which were at least two and a half metres tall, tore the deer to shreds with their sharp canines.Luckily for him ,they had not noticed him yet.Unluckily ,now they did.
One of the wolves sniffed the air and was able to catch the scent of human blood,a rare delicacy. It shifted its focus to Theiss and growled.Could a meal come any easier?Theiss let out an audible sigh and got to his feet,''time to run again,'' she said out loud.
