I willed myself to be brave, and not scream in fear, as I sprung forward, towards Nicole's lifeless body. I placed one shaky hand on Nicole's chest, while the other reached for her wrist. The whole world suddenly grew still, not even my breathing could be heard as I listened for the slightest clue of life, willing her heart to beat however faintly.
For a long time the breathing did not come, and I felt my heart giving way. I could not bring myself to think about the possible explanation there was, and then I felt it. A heartbeat, faint, and nearly unnoticeable but I have stopped every of my senses just to listen so I felt it loud and clear.
