Chapter 49 - Eyes in the dark

Kael remained seated in silence, his fingers loosely curled around the warm wooden cup. He drank his coffee slowly, as though he had all the time in the world — as though he carried no burdens at all. The faint steam rising from the drink curled like ghostly threads in the dim light, dancing upward toward the cold stone ceiling above.

Beside him stood the shadowed figure known simply as One, still and silent as ever. Kael glanced at him briefly, the corner of his mouth tugging into a small smile.

"Would you like some?" he asked with a hint of playfulness.

There was no response. Not even a glance. The figure remained as motionless as stone, its hollow presence absorbing the quiet rather than disturbing it.

Kael shrugged. "You're missing out."
