Chapter 102 - Chapter 102: That's what mages should add

Just like that, after being injected with the Yamato-brand gene fusion fluid, Yakushi Kabuto was handed over by Orochimaru to Uchiha Shinsuke for further development—specifically, to cultivate his potential as a ninja.

On the other side, Uchiha Yusuke—who had also undergone the body-enhancement surgery but was unable to awaken either Wood Release or the Sharingan—began his physical training under Orochimaru's guidance. It marked the beginning of what some jokingly called the "Big Brother Workout Journey."

As Uchiha Yusuke's training regimen spread, a new wave of physical conditioning began to take root within the Uchiha clan. They were no longer solely focused on ninjutsu and the development of their Sharingan. More and more began to devote themselves to strength training and basic physical improvement.

To outsiders, this seemed completely absurd—like tossing away a watermelon just to pick up a sesame seed.

Why focus on physical strength?

After all, the Uchiha clan was never known for excelling in raw physical prowess. If anything, the Sharingan placed an even greater burden on their bodies compared to other ninja.

Yet somehow, it had never stopped them from winning battles.

Why?

Because when you have the Sharingan, even if you're a step or two slower, it doesn't matter. The moment your opponent initiates a move—before their body even finishes the motion—the Uchiha has already predicted the angle and trajectory based on muscle tension and chakra flow.

That preemptive insight is practically prophetic.

Unless facing someone with overwhelming physical advantage, a Sharingan user in close combat is like a god. They can read, evade, counter, and dismantle opponents of equal level with ease. After all, there may be many elite ninjas in Konoha, but there's only one Might Guy.

Even against someone like Guy, further enhancing the Sharingan is still considered a superior path—starting with a single tomoe, and evolving step by step into the three-tomoe stage. That progressive refinement of perception is the Uchiha clan's core strength.

So when the rest of Konoha saw the Uchiha shift their focus to physical training, they were baffled.

It was like watching a mage abandon agility and intelligence in favor of health and defense—then charge into battle with a giant two-handed sword, spinning through enemies like a berserker.

What happened to the arrogant clan that dismissed taijutsu as beneath them?

Even the Hyuga clan—Konoha's other great dōjutsu lineage—was puzzled by the Uchiha's new direction.

Still, aside from a handful of idealists, most of the Hyuga branch members watched from the sidelines without much interest. Their spirits remained stagnant, like still water.

Their attitude?

"Let them do what they want. It doesn't concern us."

The Hyuga main house wasn't particularly concerned either. In their eyes, the Hyuga were specialized for long-range reconnaissance and perception. They never saw the Uchiha as direct rivals.

After all, the Sharingan's perceptive range is limited—barely a few meters to maybe a dozen. In contrast, the Byakugan can easily scan several miles in all directions.

Unless something came along that truly rivaled their bloodline, the Hyuga clan's position in Konoha would remain unshaken. There was no need to act rashly; all they had to do was keep their bloodline secure.

As for Orochimaru, he wasted no time using this training craze to his advantage. Under the guise of routine medical checkups, he successfully collected multiple sets of three-tomoe Sharingan from various Uchiha.

"Tsk tsk… so much effort, just to maintain a single round of tomoe rotation," Orochimaru mused.

He blinked slowly, frustrated. Forget about unlocking the full potential of the Sharingan—he couldn't even open or close the eye on command.

Compared to the fluid precision of a true Sharingan, this pair of eyes felt like defective, worn-out relics.

Without hesitation, Orochimaru placed them back into the Uchiha's eye sockets on the hospital bed and dismissed the subject. Then, he turned his attention back to the document on his desk: research notes on the Spiritualization Technique.

Of course, the Sharingan itself wasn't the problem. Beyond its innate ocular power, it could be forced to function temporarily by drawing on the brain's Yin chakra.

The real issue was Orochimaru's own spiritual power. Despite being one of the strongest among Kage-level shinobi in overall strength, his mental resilience was lacking—even weaker than that of a young Kakashi.

He needed to journey into the Pure Land and recover his soul.

But there was a problem: Orochimaru lacked the innate talent for spiritualization. His research into locating someone with that rare aptitude had stalled completely.

Even for a master of ninjutsu like Orochimaru, soul-based techniques were not easily developed.

> "Maybe it's time to change your approach."

The djinn beside him spoke up after watching Orochimaru labor over his notes for several days with no success. "Instead of wasting more time trying to recreate the technique, why not start with someone who already succeeded at using it?"

Orochimaru looked up, puzzled. "You mean... him? He's dead."

"But you still have the Impure World Reincarnation technique, don't you?" the djinn said with a sly grin. "Even if you haven't found the perfect vessel yet, using pre-summoning techniques to draw his soul from the Pure Land isn't out of the question."

It was indeed a feasible idea—at least worth exploring.

But Orochimaru, unusually, hesitated. Then, shaking his head, he rejected the proposal.

"Dan kato is dead. I don't want to disturb him... especially before understanding why the last summoned soul died without reason."

The djinn raised his eyebrows theatrically. "Wow. I never imagined you of all people would draw a moral line."

"At least for now, I don't see a reason to cross it," Orochimaru said calmly. "Besides, Dan kato may be gone, but his family is not. He has a niece—Kato Shizune—and her potential is quite promising."

> "Tsk, tsk, tsk... Forget going after your friend—now you're targeting his niece?"

The djinn gave him a sarcastic thumbs up. "That's so you, Orochimaru."

Ignoring the djinn's mockery, Orochimaru returned to his work, calmly sorting through the files on his desk.

He saw nothing wrong with his plan.

Kato Shizune may be Dan's niece, but she wasn't his niece. Blood ties meant little to someone pursuing immortality.

Even a vague connection wasn't enough to make him hesitate.

> "Your mindset really is a product of the Third Hokage's generation," the djinn muttered. Then, more seriously, "But your former teammate—Tsunade—won't think the same. Her love for her family runs deep. She'll never let you lay a hand on Shizune."

"She may not approve," Orochimaru replied, "but she doesn't have the power to stop me."

He paused, eyes gleaming. "I'll capture Tsunade and use her as leverage to force Shizune's cooperation."

The djinn considered the plan. Brutal. Simple. Effective. He didn't bother arguing.

> "When do we begin?"

"It'll take time to locate Tsunade's current whereabouts," Orochimaru replied, licking his lips. "I'll use the interim to finish up business in the village."

For instance—checking in on Yamato. It had been a while since his last evaluation.
