When she said the name "Jeffrey," his body tensed up just a little, barely noticeable.
"Do you hate Jeffrey?" he asked softly.
She let out a small sigh, her voice carrying a trace of sadness. "Well, who in Shen City doesn't know him? In that car accident, it was Jeffrey's fiancée, Camila, who died. Since his fiancée died, obviously my ending wasn't going to be good. For every person trying to please him, there were just as many who couldn't wait to kick me while I was already down."
She paused, then said with a bitter little smile, "Sometimes, I even wonder... if it hadn't been Camila in that car with me, would I have actually won the case? Would I have avoided three years in prison and everything that came after?"
Her voice didn't sound angry or resentful, but the way she joked about it made him feel a deep, almost painful guilt in his chest.
Half of everything she'd been through, maybe even more than half, was probably because of him.
