Chapter 19
"But if that was the case, Professor Smith would've already said so with giving me extra points, but that didn't happen, so I don't think it's that easy answering this question." Hermione thought about it and said so while looking at Harry and Ron.
"Then what kind of spell could be the strongest?" Ron almost pulled his hair while asking.
Harry and Hermione looked at each other but didn't say anything, as this was their first time seeing someone like Ron putting in an effort to think about any matter, other than eating.
"Seems like everyone can only think about the Unforgivable Curses as the strongest curses." Alan, seeing almost everyone in the class looking confused, couldn't help but smile.
"Professor, are unforgivable curses really not that strong?" It was Draco this time who had asked this question, as he had already heard about the importance of the Unforgivable Curses from his father, but here this professor in front of him was saying something entirely different from what his father had said.
Alan, hearing the Malfoy boy's query, smiled slightly, "No, they are strong, or else they wouldn't have been called the three unforgivable curses."
"Then..." Draco, hearing Alan's reply, wanted to say something; at the same time, the group of young wizards grew even more confused because if the Unforgivable Curses were really strong, then why did he say that Hermione's answer was not right?
"Alright, alright, I understand all of your concerns, so let's understand something else first." Alan glanced across the classroom; he had made the classroom way too tense. "Can any of you tell me what exactly we are using spells for?"
Another question, and the classroom once again fell silent; the students probably knew the answer but weren't feeling confident; despite that, two of the students managed to raise their hands, "Yes, Mr Malfoy."
"To make our life easier, and as a wizard, learning spells is part of our life." Draco with a proud smile on his face.
"And what about you, Miss Granger?" Alan nodded at Draco and then asked, turning his attention to Hermione, who also had raised her hand.
Hermione, for a second, looked at her on both sides and then, clearing her throat, said, "Professor, we learn spells to protect ourselves and others in times of need."
Though Hermione's answer could be called noble, it still lacked many parts, but as he had already downed the mood of the class with the heavy atmosphere, he decided to take a friendly route this time.
"Both Mr Malfoy and Miss Granger are right, so five points to two of them." Alan, with a smile, said, finally brightening up the mood of the class a little bit, and then added, "We learn the spells for many reasons, which include offence, defence, treating patients and, just like both of them had said, making our lives easier."
"So now tell me, do the three unforgivable curses help us treat patients or help in our daily lives?" Alan asked, sweeping his gaze around the class.
"No, professor." Though the group of students murmured under their breath, Alan managed to hear it and said calmly, "That's right, the three unforgivable curses don't provide help in that aspect, unless a healer in St Mungo's wants to take someone's life away or an angry family member wants to get rid of a naughty kid who makes him angry all the time."
Hearing this, a few of the students laughed, finding it funny; however, at the same time, a certain group looked at Alan as if something was wrong with him.
"Every spell in existence has its scope of use and necessity of its existence!" Alan said, and looking at a few kids expressions, he felt that he was going in the right direction at this moment; however, once again a hand was raised, and this time it was Harry Potter. "Do you want to say something, Mr Potter?"
Hearing Alan calling him Mr Potter, Harry was slightly taken aback but then said under the encouraging glances around him, "Yes, sir, I think there is no need to allow the existence of the three unforgivable curses."
"Hoh!" Alan was surprised, but then he looked at the students in the class with a smile and asked, "Do you all also think the same?"
All of the young wizards, including the known characters to Alan, nodded their heads almost immediately, except for a few Slytherin students who seem to have a different idea about this matter.
"Mixed reactions, huh!" Alan smiled and then walked among the group of students. "Though it's true that restriction should be imposed on the use of the unforgivable curse, it's not necessary to erase their existence entirely."
The students were surprised by Alan's answer, but before they could allow their minds to think in that direction, Alan raised his tone just a little and spoke again, "More than ten years ago, the dark and evil ravaged the magic world… and facing the Dark Lord and his followers, called "Death Eaters, can one still adhere to morality? like not using the unforgivable curses or sort?"
Alan for a moment stopped allowing the kids to ponder on the topic for a moment, and as kids one by one began to give out expected reactions, like shaking their heads, he opened his mouth once again to speak. "That's right; in a life-and-death battle, there is no word that exists called mercy. As long as we are winning over the dark and evil side, all use of magic means is just a normal thing."
In Alan's view, he would never hesitate to learn any kind of magic as long as it's useful to him, as for him those spells and magic are just a means to reach his end goal, and for him, black magic also falls in that same category.
Accepting black magic and being willing to use it at the required time does not mean that he believes that the black magic is most powerful, but it's just that to counter certain things, one needs to look at unorthodox tactics.
