Chapter 15 - Poisoned

Jake thought about what the chief said for a while, but even after that, there was nothing he could understand.

"Thank you for telling me. I'm sorry for having disturbed your home. Still, I'll have to ask you to point me in the right direction so that I can leave," Jake said.

Cain finally walked in with the tea and the snacks. He placed them on the table and stepped back.

"I see you are in a rush then, but before you go, at least drink and eat a little. Cain went through all the trouble of making it for you," Carson said.

Jake felt it would be rude to refuse at this point, so he stretched out his hands and took the cup of tea. The steam rose and danced right in front of him.

He brought the cup to his mouth and took a sip. The flavours washed over his tongue immediately. Though he could tell that the leaves were low quality, Cain had managed to make their flavours explode.

Jake took the rest away from his mouth. He smiled at Carson and was about to compliment him, but suddenly his throat tightened.

Wheeze. Wheeze.

He struggled to breathe, his hands started shaking. The boiling hot tea fell to the ground, some spilling on him, but he had too much going on now to worry about that.

Crypt tried to step in and help Jake, but their connection was disrupted and he was unsummoned. Whatever was happening inside Jake was disrupting his summoning as well.

His skin started turning pale and his gaze became fuzzy, but he was able to make out the face of Carson and Cain smiling as his body hit the ground.

He lost all control of his limbs, and his eyes rolled back.

[A dangerous substance is spreading through your body]

[Beginning purification immediately]

[Time till purification: twenty seconds]

The system sent a message and immediately got to work cleaning up his body. Cain and Carson stood over Jake.

"I'm sorry, young man, but it must be done. You are a Chosen, after all. The poison will soon kill you. We will sell your body to someone who can remove the seal of the Chosen from you and hand it over to someone else.

The money that will be gained from your body will be enormous. Our small village will become something greater," Carson said. He turned and started walking away.

"Do not blame me for this. Blame it on your bad luck," he added as he walked.

"Bad luck?" Jake suddenly asked. His voice made Cain and Carson turn in shock—he wasn't supposed to be talking now. He should be dying.

They saw Jake slowly getting up from the ground.

[Purification complete.]

"All of you use that word, blaming bad luck. What the hell do you know is bad luck?" he asked. He looked up with a green glow in his eyes.

Cain immediately attacked. He had to stop Jake before he made a full recovery—but Jake already had. As he slashed, a shield blocked the attack and a sword hacked off his hand.

Cain fell back, screaming in pain as blood poured in all directions. The undead skeleton stood over him, ready to finish this off.

Carson watched in fear and fright, his body trembling.

"All I did was ask for some directions. I could have killed all of you, but I didn't. But my patience has run thin. I'll never kill a man, but the moment a man tries to kill me, he is no longer a man to me," Jake said. His gaze was like that of the grim reaper. He summoned the second undead and summoned Crypt.

Carson saw the summoned and more fear gripped him. He immediately tried to run, but a spear struck his shoulder and pinned him to the wall.

"You poisoned my master. Death is mercy for you," Crypt said. Both men groaned in pain, their blood spilling all over.

Jake got back on his chair. He grabbed Carson's tea and sipped it. This one didn't have any poison. He pulled up the system screen to assign his stats before he left here.

Jake sat cross-legged as he looked at the screen. He noticed that his HP and Mana had also doubled, but he didn't notice.

"System, why did they double?" he asked.

[It increases after every five level-ups, a benefit of being a necromancer. You possess immense health as you grow.]

"Shouldn't that be the opposite? Well, what do I know. That aside, what should I set my stats to?" he asked.

[That's your problem. But as someone who summons, you need intelligence and also agility.]

"Hmm, alright. Send five to intelligence and five to dexterity, five to the rest as well, and the last two to intelligence. I think I want to look for some level of balance," Jake said.

[Whatever]

After he finished assigning the stats, he got up and walked to the window. He looked outside and saw all the men standing outside, as if waiting for something.

"I guess they were in on this as well, right?" he asked, looking at Carson on the wall. Carson shivered when he felt Jake's gaze.

"Please, no. They weren't part of it. Please don't touch them. Please," he begged.

"I don't think you understand the situation you have put yourself and your village in. There is no way they'll allow me to live after seeing what I did to you. So they'll try to kill me, and I'll kill all of them in return," Jake said.

"Please, just let me live and I'll tell them to stand down. I promise," he said.

"Let you live? Hahahahaha," Jake laughed loudly and then looked at Carson, his eyes glowing even more. "You just sold your soul for a few coins."
