Chapter 9 - Chapter 17-18

Chapter 17: Family Ties

It was a quiet day in Virginia Beach. Scott sat on the couch in his parents' spacious living room, feeling the familiar comfort that always seemed to bring peace to his mind, even after the most grueling deployments. The house was elegant but cozy, decorated with nautical touches that paid homage to Michael and Jennifer's Navy careers. On the wall above the fireplace, a large family photo showed Scott at his graduation from the Naval Academy, with his parents standing by, both looking proud.

Jennifer walked into the room carrying a tray of coffee and cookies. "Here you go, Scott. I know you like your coffee strong, so I made it extra strong."

"Thanks, Mom," he said with a smile. "You always know exactly what I need."

Michael followed close behind, holding a copy of the book he had written, now in several editions and still on the bestseller lists. He set it on the coffee table before sitting in the chair next to it.

"You should sign this for me, Dad," Scott joked, taking the book.

Michael laughed, the warm sound of a man who had faced many battles but never lost touch with what really mattered. "No signature needed. You helped shape this. A lot of what's in there comes from what I've learned from watching you lead."

Scott leaned back against the couch, feeling the weight of his father's words. "It's weird to hear that from you, you know? I've always been inspired by how you led. Now you're saying I inspired you."

Jennifer sat down next to her son, holding his hand for a moment. "You're a perfect combination of both of us. Your father's determination and… well, your mother's intelligence and empathy."

Scott smiled. "I agree with the second part."

The lighthearted mood soon gave way to a more serious tone when Michael brought up a sensitive subject.

"Scott, we need to talk about you."

"About me?" — Scott asked, frowning.

"Yeah," Jennifer interjected. "You're always so busy, between missions and training and everything. We're so proud of everything you've accomplished, but we want to know how you're doing."

Scott took a sip of his coffee before answering. "I'm fine, Mom. Really. I know the job can be intense, but I really enjoy what I do. I'm where I've always wanted to be."

"But do you feel like you're taking care of yourself? Not just physically, but emotionally?" Jennifer asked with concern.

Scott knew his mother was right to be concerned. He'd seen plenty of his teammates deal with trauma, but he'd always felt different. "I know the job can take a toll on the mind, Mom, but I don't carry around regrets or doubts. I have peace with what I do because I know I'm protecting people. That's enough for me."

Michael nodded slowly. "That's good to hear, son. But I want you to know that if you ever feel like the weight is getting to be too much, we're here. We always will be."

Scott looked at them both, feeling a surge of gratitude. "I know. And that means a lot to me."

"So, what's next?" Michael asked, changing the tone of the conversation. "You've already achieved what many only dream of. You're a leader in DEVGRU, you've done missions that no one can even imagine... What else do you want to achieve?"

Scott thought for a moment, looking out the window at the garden. "I don't know if I have a clear answer for that. I think my focus right now is to be the best leader I can be for Echo Team. I want to make sure everyone gets home safe, no matter what the mission may be."

"That's admirable," Jennifer commented. "But what about outside of work? Have you ever thought about having a more balanced life? Maybe meeting someone special?"

Scott let out a soft laugh. "Mom, I knew you'd bring that up."

"Of course I would! You're 28, Scott. Don't you think it's time to think about something other than your career?"

"I do think about it," Scott admitted. "But it's not that simple. My job doesn't leave much room for building a relationship. And honestly, I don't know if it would be fair to put someone in that position."

Michael crossed his arms. "I get what you're saying, but your mother has a point. You deserve to have something other than your job. And you don't have to rush it, but don't close the door on it."

"I'm not closing it," Scott assured. "I just think I need to find the right moment. And who knows? Maybe it will happen when I least expect it."

Jennifer stood up and grabbed a photo album from the bookshelf. She placed it on Scott's lap and began flipping through it.

"Look at this," she said, pointing to a picture of Scott as a child, dressed in a tiny sailor uniform. "You've always been so determined. Ever since you were little, you knew you wanted to follow in your father's footsteps."

Scott smiled as he saw the picture. "I remember that day. It was the Fourth of July parade, right?"

"That's right," Michael confirmed. "You spent the marching around the yard all day after that."

"Well, it looks like I was training early," Scott joked.

Jennifer turned another page, showing a picture of Scott's graduation from the Naval Academy. "And look at you here. So proud and full of ambition."

Scott was silent for a moment, studying the picture. "I guess in some ways I'm still that guy. I just have a few more scars now—physical and emotional."

"Those scars show what you've been through," Jennifer said softly. "And they also show how strong you are."

As night fell, Scott stood, looking at his parents. "I needed this. This talk, this time with you guys. It reminds me of what really matters."

"You're always welcome here, Scott," Michael said, placing a hand on his son's shoulder. "No matter where your career takes you, this will always be your home."

Jennifer hugged Scott tightly. "And I'll always be here to ask you the hard questions," she teased, smiling.

Scott laughed. "I wouldn't expect anything less from you, Mom."

As he walked out of the house, he felt lighter. He knew that no matter what the future brought, he would always have his parents' unwavering support.

And that night, when he returned home, Scott picked up his phone and opened a file where he jotted down personal reflections. He wrote: "Family is the foundation of everything. They are my rock, my connection to who I am. As long as they're by my side, I know I can face anything."

Chapter 18: The Promotion

It was a clear morning in Virginia Beach, with clear skies and the sun reflecting off the Atlantic waters. Scott was at Dam Neck, finalizing the details for a training exercise with Echo. The mood in the squadron was lively, although no one knew that this day would have a special meaning for Scott.

He was focused on reviewing the strategies for the simulation when a senior officer entered the room, immediately catching his attention.

"Lieutenant Junior Walker," the officer announced, with a formal tone that made all the members of Echo stop what they were doing.

"Yes, sir," Scott replied, standing up and saluting.

"I need you to accompany me to the commander's office. Now."

Scott's heart raced slightly. He had no idea why he had been called unexpectedly, but he knew it was something important. He looked at his team, gave a brief nod to the second-in-command, and followed the officer outside.

The commander's office was an imposing room decorated with medals, plaques, and photos of past missions. When Scott entered, he saw the commander of the DEVGRU unit, accompanied by other high-ranking officers. There was a solemn air in the air, but also a slight smile on the commander's face.

"Walker," the commander began, gesturing for Scott to come closer. "Have a seat."

Scott complied, sitting in the chair in front of the commander's desk. He maintained a firm posture, but he couldn't completely hide the curiosity that burned within him.

"Before we begin, I want to say that you are one of the finest officers to ever serve this unit," the commander said, his gaze firm. "Your performance, your leadership, and your dedication are shining examples of what we expect from a DEVGRU operator."

"Thank you, sir," Scott replied, keeping his tone professional.

The commander picked up a folder from the desk, opened it, and revealed an official document with the Navy emblem on top. "Walker, I am here to inform you that in recognition of your exceptional service, you have been promoted to full lieutenant."

For a moment, Scott was silent, taking in the news. He felt a mixture of pride and responsibility, knowing that this promotion was not just a title, but a reflection of all he had accomplished thus far.

"Congratulations, Lieutenant," the commander added, standing and extending his hand.

Scott stood, shook the commander's hand, and replied, "Thank you, sir. It is an honor."

Later that day, a brief ceremony was held at the base. All members of Echo Squadron were present, along with other DEVGRU operators. Scott stood in the center, in his impeccable uniform, as the commander read the official text of his promotion.

"Today, we recognize the exemplary service and extraordinary leadership of Lieutenant Scott Walker. His dedication and commitment to the mission have not only inspired his fellow soldiers, but have also raised the bar for excellence in this unit."

As the commander pinned Scott's new full lieutenant insignia to his uniform, a hearty round of applause echoed through the room. His team was the first to step up to congratulate him.

"Congratulations, boss," Logan, one of Echo's most experienced operators, said, patting Scott on the shoulder.

"Does that mean you're going to give us less work now, or more?" Mason, the demolitions expert, joked, drawing laughter from everyone around.

Scott smiled. "It depends. Do you want to train until you drop or drop on the next mission?"

"Good answer," Mason replied with a laugh.

After the ceremony, Scott took a moment to himself. He went to the quietest corner of the base and picked up the phone to call his parents.

"Hello?" Jennifer replied, her voice warm as ever.

"Hi, Mom," Scott said, trying to contain his excitement.

"Scott! What a nice surprise. How's my son doing today?"

"Well… kind of the same," he began hesitantly. "I mean, except for the fact that I got promoted to full lieutenant."

Jennifer's scream of joy nearly deafened him. "Oh my God, Scott! That's amazing! Michael! Michael, come here now!"

On the other end of the line, Scott heard his father asking what was going on.

"Your son just got promoted to full lieutenant!" Jennifer announced excitedly.

"That's what I was hoping to hear!" Michael said in the background before picking up the phone. "Congratulations, son. You deserve this more than anyone."

"Thank you, Dad. It means a lot to hear that from you."

"And how was the ceremony?" Jennifer asked.

"It was simple, but special. My team was there, and it was great to share this moment with them."

"We're so proud of you, Scott," Jennifer said, her voice thick with emotion.

"Thank you, Mom. You two have always been my inspiration."

That evening, Scott returned home, exhausted but satisfied. He took off his uniform and placed his newly acquired badge on a small shelf where he kept items that symbolized important moments in his career.

Sitting in his favorite chair, he reflected on everything he had gone through to get to this point. The long hours of training, the challenging missions, the losses and the triumphs. The promotion was more than recognition; it was validation that he was on the right path.

He knew that the responsibility that came with the new rank would be even greater, but he was ready to face it. After all, leading was not just a duty for Scott; it was an honor.

As he looked at the badge, he took out a notebook and wrote: "Promoted to full lieutenant. This is not the end of one path, but the beginning of another. More responsibility, more challenges, but also more opportunities to make a difference. I am ready."

With that, he closed the notebook, feeling at peace. The journey continued, and he was more prepared than ever to face it.
