Chapter 4 - chapter4: Beneath the surface

Mia's POV

Eric had been doing so well since his last check-up. He came in for his routine bloodwork, even flashed me a brave little smile when I gave him another plush dragon. I'd never seen a child so attached to toys—and yet, I couldn't help indulging him. His eyes sparkled every time.

His mother, Lia Saint, was still particular, but she'd softened a bit around me. Not quite friendly, but less wary. I couldn't blame her. When you have a child, especially one who seems to get sick too often for comfort, you become protective.

But something about Eric still nagged at the back of my mind.

He was strong for his age. Too strong. His healing was faster than average, his immune system oddly reactive. Yet he bruised easily, had periodic weakness, and his blood results sometimes danced on the line of unexplainable.

There was something beneath the surface I couldn't quite name.

But I didn't push.

Not yet.

Ryan Saint hadn't returned to the clinic since the car accident. Good riddance. I didn't need his looming, controlling energy interrupting my workflow. Still, that damn image of his silver eyes, cold and unreadable, sometimes slipped into my mind when I least expected.

I didn't like it.

Ryan's POV

It had been a silent day in the office. Mr. Jackson, my driver, noticed my silence but didn't question it. He knew better.

My mind was on Eric.

Lia said he'd been tired lately. Not enough to cause alarm—just the usual "kid stuff," she claimed. But I knew better. A Saint doesn't get "tired." Not unless something is wrong with the bloodline.

Not unless… the other half of him was conflicting.

He's a hybrid—human and vampire. That alone made his life complicated. But we kept it hidden. No one in the human world suspected. No one ever could. Especially not his doctor, Dr. Mia Walls.

But I'd seen the way she looked at Eric. Not just with care—she was observant, too observant. Her curiosity was a risk.

Still… I couldn't deny she was good with him. He trusted her.

For now, that was enough.

I would watch her. Closely
