Chapter 5 - chapter 3 The Great Adventure Siege continued

Pt. 2 – The Battle

The next morning I woke to the night scout yelling:

"To arms! To arms! The goblins are marching to this building! They'll be here in the next two minutes!"

I was out of my cot in an instant and ran to Nil, who was restringing her bow.

"Use your axes," she said absently. "They'll be better in close quarters. Your sword will be slowed down because of its length."

"Okay."

Garron yelled orders to form a defensive position and let the goblins funnel through the door.

Someone shouted,

"Won't they just light the place on fire?"

Another snapped,

"The building's made of stone, dumbass!"

"Shut up, all of you!" Garron barked.

"Ranged fighters behind the line, and anyone who skirmishes—up front and form a defensive line!"

There was silence. The tension was so thick it was almost hard to breathe.

Then—war cries.

Through the front windows and the door, goblins surged in, almost instantly killed by a combination of arrows and cantrips.

The next half-dozen waves fared no better.

Then—three hobgoblin knights burst through the door, with a half-dozen regular goblins behind them.

Rick and his team of three others stepped to two of the goblin knights. I stepped up to the third.

The first thing I did was kill two goblins in quick succession. Then—three arrows. Two more goblins dropped, and the hobgoblin knight took one in the shoulder.

The knight screamed in rage and pain, swinging his sword wildly.

I ducked under the blade and struck his exposed side with a hand axe, caving in his lung. My other axe hit the back of his knee, and he collapsed.

I stomped on his throat.

I returned to the defensive line quickly. More arrows and cantrips tore through the enemy.

This went on for several minutes. Dozens of goblins fell.

I figured the pile had to be at least eighty bodies deep.

Only five adventurers had been killed.

Then the prince arrived—five hobgoblin knights and the general at his side.

Twenty goblins charged in behind them.

Garron and the other D-rankers, who had been holding back, rushed forward.

We all surged into the final melee.

All hell broke loose.

Bolts of fire and ice. Arrows from every angle.

I killed a dozen goblins in the commotion—most by hitting them in the back of the head while they were distracted.

Then—I locked eyes with the goblin general.

It charged with its bloody blade raised.

I picked up a dagger from a fallen adventurer and threw it. It struck the general in the gut.

I swung one of my hand axes—but the general's sword caught the handle.

I pulled the blade downward with the axe's beard—and with my other axe, I smashed in its skull.

The battle wound down. The goblins retreated, leaderless.

The prince had been overwhelmed, but still managed to kill one D-ranker and cripple another.

I cast my monster harvest spell multiple times to gather the loot.
