The following cycle, at Learners Academy. Memor was in his own world during Master Evangelia's lecture, his mind is still stuck in the conversation from the previous cycle.
Councilor Spyro will probably make a move pretty soon. Sal village is located in one far end in the Memory domain, its also one of the smallest settlements, only having three Councilors controlling the village. Councilor Spyro, Councilor Tryphon and Councilor Viktor. If Councilor Spyro plans to expel Uncle Ceres from the village, he would need at least one other council members vote. Added to the fact that Memor is keeping a secret, it's only a matter of time before he is found out,
If that were the case, getting expelled from the village would be the least of his worries, he might lose his head.
Haa, there is no point stressing about it. Doing all this thinking was making Memor feel sick, he still had to act like he was listening to the lecture or he might get the Luni treatment. Luni was in the front of the class doing squats with stacks of chairs on his back for dozing off. Despite his Learner physique, doing squats for hours is still very tasking, especially with weights and Memor was no Learner.
Focusing back on the lecture, Master Evangelia taught more about the history after the Passion Curse, how the war between the Memory domain and the Will domain started and went on for centuries and only festering out a few years ago.
After the lecture, Memor made his way to the library, knowing that Alara will probably be fixated on some historical legend. To him, she practical lives there.
Alara sat on one of the long desks, fascinated by a book in front of her called" Legends of Whirl". Suddenly, a tap was felt on her shoulder, she turned around, a white young man stood, a slight curl played his lips.
"Ahh Mori! I-I haven't seen you coming around in the library much, were you busy?" Alara asked a bit flustered from his sudden appearance.
On most cycles after school, Memor would go to his uncle's home and train with the sword just outside the hatch, sometimes his uncle will join him as well in sparring.
"You know, I've been here and there." Memor said as he sat down. The book on the table catching his eye." What are you reading?"
The moment she heard that question, her whole aura changed, a crooked smile revealed upon her face.
For the next hour, Memor was boarded with knowledge that came too quick to fully understand, all he knew was that it was about someplace that is different somehow. At the end of it Alara was sweating and Memor was struck by a headache.
I should really be careful what I ask her next time. Sighing internally, Memor rubbed his temples in an attempt to ease his migraine.
Alara having realized she's been rambling on for too long straightened herself, wipping the smile off her face.
"So Memor I heard you went on a hunting trip?"
"Where did you hear that from? I just went yesterday." Memor a bit baffled at the pace that news travel throughout the village
"Everybody knows. You went out with most of the popular Grade 1 Mnemonist in the village what you expect?"
"They're popular?"
"What, you don't know?"
Am I suppose to know? Memor shook as he scratched the back of his head.
Seeing his reaction, Alara couldn't help but chuckle a bit, before letting out a long sigh.
"Allow me to educate you." Alara said closing the book in front of her." The group you went on a hunting trip is called Figure."
"Figure?"
That name sounds kinda lame. Memor made a dubious expression.
Alara gazed, giving him a weird look before she continued." They are the most successful party out of all the parties. A 90% mission success rate! 90%!"
"Not only do they have such a huge success rate, their leader is every woman's dream husband!"
"Theano?" Memor's expression turned more dubious.
"What's with that look! He is accomplished, powerful, rich, what more can a woman ask for?"
"So, you are a part of those woman?" Memor smirked.
"What? That's besides the point. I'm just telling you why he's popular." A redness crept on her face as she turned her head away.
"Anyhow, there is also Calypso, she is one of the youngest Grade 1 Mnemonist from the village," Alara moved closer, whispering in Memor's ear" and there is a rumor that she has been chosen by the Believers of Mnemosyne."
Quite Impressive. The Believers of Mnemosyne are the only group in the Memory domain with great power, since no empires exist in the Memory domain, it is the single force that has jurisdiction in the whole of the Memory domain. Though they have no church in Sal village as it is so far away from where other cities and villages reside.
"Ok, I get it." Memor stopped her before she could continue.
He recounted the events of the hunting trip, mostly focusing on the enchanted arrows, Elena's mysterious power, and the wagon that can create rifts that ate away matter. Before asking if she knew anything about Unique Fragment Abilities.
"I did see a book about it, but never got around to reading it."
Alara walked around the library looking for the book while Memor followed. Despite her Learner memory it took her awhile to find the book "Basics of Mnemonists".
Back at the table, Alara skimmed through the book, skipping parts regarding the different realms and Learner abilities. Reaching a section regarding Grade 1 Mnemonists.
"Here. Grade 1 Mnemonists." She pointed. "They're also called Mind Shifters."
Her finger streamed through the text for key words.
"Unique Fragment Abilities:
A Grade 1 Mnemonist gains a unique ability different from the abilities all Grade 1 Mnemonists get. The unique ability depends on the Memory Fragment consumed. The Memory Fragments are ranked from the most common Unique Fragment Ability to the least..."
Alara moved her finger lower, scanning through the Unique Fragment Ability list, searching for similar abilities to what Memor had seen on the trip.
"There. Forgotten Space. This is the Unique Ability Calypso used."
Memor glanced at the book, reading the part on Forgotten Space. Forgotten Space is a Unique Fragment Ability that is one of the most destructive, the Mind Shifter can enchant objects or a part of themselves making anything that makes contact with it disappear. The principle of Forgotten Space is that the Mind Shifter can make the World forget certain things ever existed, thus healing the destroyed part is almost impossible. Forgotten Space is one of the rarer Unique Fragment Abilities a Mind Shifter can get.
They looked further, finding the Unique Fragment Ability of the wagon that was an Artifact. Last Anchor, it creates a rift in reality where the Mind Shifter can teleport to another location. The time taken depends on the distance traveled and the weight of items taken, if another living being is taken, the time to travel is increased drastically. The principle of Last Anchor is that the Mind Shifter remembers the location that they have once seen, then imaging themselves in the location and finally projecting the imagined position on to the world. Last Anchor is the most common Unique Fragment Ability for a Memory Fragment.
That's interesting, they must have sent the Skruck carcasses to... well I don't know where.
They searched for Elena's Unique Fragment Ability, but were disappointed.
Elena's Unique Ability is either very rare or what I saw during our hunting trip is just a little of what she is capable of. Memor held his chin in thought, his uncle sometimes summons items from a similar black rift to Last Anchor. Though he highly doubts it's the same Unique Ability.
A sudden question popped into his head. His eyebrows furrowed.
"If there're better Unique Fragment Abilities, won't Learners choose one that is rarer? Or, don't they have a choice?"
"Well Mori, in short, they don't have a choice. You get chosen by the Memory Fragment not the other way around."
"So... it's just random what you get?"
Alara closed the book, not finding anything of interest.
"One could get chosen by multiple Memory Fragments. Usually, they can tell the rarity of the Memory Fragment calling for them, but what ability they get is mostly random."
Alara went to return the book, while Memor followed behind.
"For the more common Memory Fragments, can be compared to other ones that have been turned into Artifacts, to find out what Unique Fragment Ability the Memory Fragment holds." Alara picked out another book, returning back to her long table.
Having sat back down next to her, Memor asked more of Grade 1 Mnemonist. He learned that people that have consumed Memory Fragments are called Laners. Not only of the Memory domain but in the other domains as well. He learned that using Fragment Abilities takes a toll on the user's mind, limiting the number of times their abilities could be used.
Memor asked on, one question after the other. Soon he realized it was for naut, Alara's eventual entrancement for the book she was reading, slowly turned her answers into a mumble of words.
He left the library. Any attempt at starting a conversation with Alara was returned with failure. He stood outside the library, shaking his head.
Her focus is enviable.
Now out of the library, Memor thought of the things he could do, since he was free for the time being, Sparring with Uncle Ceres, Go check on Luni, Getting his payment from Calypso. Unfortunately, his plans were interrupted by his master.
"Memor," Evangelia called as she walked closer." Come with me."
"Where to?" His brows furrowed.
"Torsal."
