Chapter 161 - On the trail of a disappeared scientist

Zone of Silence, Chihuahuan Desert, Mexico -

The air in the Zone of Silence vibrated with a stillness that was at once healing and profoundly unsettling. Seraphina and Rafael, Aria's parents, had emerged from the canyon of altered time feeling strangely renewed in body, yet their souls were burdened with a new, heavy understanding of reality's malleability. Direct answers about Eleonora's or Aria's whereabouts had not materialized as clear words or visions, but rather as a profound sense that the threads of destiny were far more complex and intertwined than they had ever imagined.

Don Elías, the elderly shaman who had guided them, observed them with his black, unfathomable eyes, which seemed to hold the wisdom of the desert stars.

"You have felt how the Great Mystery bends time to its will," he finally said, his deep voice like the rumble of a distant thunder. "But the answers your hearts yearn for with such desperation, the whereabouts of the Ancient Guardian and of your daughter, the Ix K'iin, do not reside solely in the echoes of the spirit that this sacred place reveals."

Seraphina felt a pang of impatience mixed with fear. "Then where, Elder? We have traversed worlds and times searching for them."

Don Elías nodded slowly. "The woman you knew as Eleonora, your daughter's grandmother, was a powerful light, a weaver of pure magic connected to the essence of Gaia. Her disappearance, like that of many others who carried a similar flame of knowledge and consciousness, was no simple accident of fate, nor a voluntary departure. It was... a selective harvest."

The shaman turned, his gaze lost on the vibrant desert horizon. "If you wish to understand the web of shadows that ensnared your Eleonora, and therefore, the dangerous path your daughter Aria now treads, you must follow the trail of another 'man of knowledge' who came too close to the truth of the Universal Lattice, and who was also... silenced."

He paused, letting his words settle. "Go to the Great Tenochtitlán, the city of cities, the one you now call Mexico City," Don Elías indicated, with a slight gesture of his gnarled hand towards the distant south. "There, amidst the labyrinth of concrete, steel, and countless souls, seek the forgotten echoes of a man named Jacobo Grinberg. Investigate what truly happened to him, to his research, to his theories that tore the veil of perceived reality. He is an important key in this dark puzzle."

Rafael frowned. "Jacobo Grinberg... I have heard that name in the most esoteric and discreet circles of the White Brotherhood. A brilliant scientist, a neurophysiologist who dared to explore consciousness beyond the limits of materialistic science. He disappeared decades ago, did he not?"

"Yes," Don Elías confirmed. "Grinberg's disappearance left many unanswered questions, many loose threads in the fabric of what you call 'reality.' I suspect, with the certainty granted to me by the desert wind and the whispers of the spirits of this place, that whoever took him – those shadow weavers who serve a hidden power at the apex of your world and who fear the light of awakened consciousness – are the same ones who also took your Eleonora."

"These were not isolated events," the old shaman continued, his voice growing graver and more urgent. "It was a systematic purge, a silent hunt. Those who took Grinberg, those who took Eleonora, are the same who have tried to suppress anyone who knew too much about ancient magic, about the true handling of consciousness, about the nature of the Lattice that sustains your world and which is now being profaned and contested by cosmic horrors and the unbridled ambition of stellar and terrestrial tyrants."

Don Elías approached them, his black eyes shining with an almost painful intensity. "The Lattice must be the key to understanding all of this. Grinberg touched it with his science and his courage. Your Eleonora knew it through her pure magic and her connection with Gaia. Your daughter Aria, now, without fully knowing it, is resonating with it in a new and potentially transformative way. Those who fear the Lattice, those who seek to control it for their own selfish ends or destroy it for fear of its liberating power, are your true enemies, and hers."

A new path, dangerous and full of uncertainty, opened before Seraphina and Rafael. Mexico City, an urban monster of millions of souls, seemed an even more daunting destination than the depths of Hollow Earth. But if following the trail of a scientist who disappeared decades ago could lead them to Eleonora, or to understanding the nature of the organization that had persecuted them for so long, they were willing to face it.

"Jacobo Grinberg..." Seraphina repeated, the name now etched in her mind. "If those who took him are the same ones who took Eleonora... then following his trail, however cold it may be, could lead us to her... or at least, to the truth behind her disappearance, and perhaps, to a way to help Aria."

Don Elías nodded one last time. "Go with care, Children of the Brotherhood. The city is a jungle of a different kind, with predators more subtle in their deceptions but no less lethal in their intentions. Seek Grinberg's echoes in the places where science and mystery touched. And may the indomitable spirit of the Desert and the clarity of the Zone of Silence sharpen your perception and strengthen your will."

With a final look at the shamans and the timeless landscape that surrounded them, Seraphina and Rafael prepared for a new and perilous journey. Their search for Aria and Eleonora now led them from the mystical stillness of the desert to the chaotic urban heart of Mexico, on the trail of a disappeared scientist whose theories on consciousness might hold the key to unraveling a mystery that spanned generations and threatened to consume the world.
