Chapter 26 - Glitch in the system

Days turned into weeks. The kingdom slowly, tentatively, began to heal under King Theron's steady hand. Alaric was imprisoned, his once-grand chambers now his desolate cell. Elowen, under Cassian's watchful, almost scholarly eye, remained at Viremont, a prisoner of her own lineage, slowly beginning to unravel the forced narratives of her past.

Life with Cassian had settled into a rhythm of shared purpose and quiet intimacy. His presence was a comforting, powerful anchor in this strange new world. Our nights were filled with whispered confidences and passionate discoveries, our days with strategic discussions and continued research into the Aetheric lines and ancient magic. He was everything the novel's male lead should have been, and more.

Everything felt... complete. The story had been rewritten. The villainess had not only survived but had helped save a kingdom. The male lead had embraced his true power and found a genuine partner. It was the perfect ending.

Yet, a subtle unease gnawed at me. It wasn't about the kingdom, or Cassian, or even the lingering threat of Alaric's followers. It was about it.

The System.

It had been my constant companion, my guide, my interface to this world. But now, with the major quests completed, the warnings gone, it felt... too quiet. Too benign.

I was sitting in my chambers, going over some of the old texts again, not for information on Ley lines, but for any mention of "systems" or "narrative guides." There was nothing. Just old prophecies, dusty histories, and the strange, game-like alerts that had been so central to my journey.

"Everything is going well," I murmured to myself, setting down a heavy tome. "The kingdom is stabilizing. Theron is a good king. Cassian and I..." A small smile touched my lips. "Everything is over going well."

But the smile faded. "But I wonder what exactly is this system, and where does it come from? It never felt normal, not really. Level up bonuses, system-generated reactions. What kind of fantasy novel needs a game interface?"

A cold prickle ran down my spine. The thought had been there, lurking in the back of my mind, ever since I first realized I was in a novel. It was too convenient, too structured. The system had guided me, yes, but almost forced me, through its warnings and quest lines, into specific actions. It had never been a benevolent helper. It had been... a controller.

I leaned forward, a shiver running through me. My voice, though a whisper, was firm, directed into the empty air of the room. "What are you really?"

A beat of silence. Then, a chillingly familiar metallic voice, devoid of emotion, filled the air, resonating directly in my mind.

[SYSTEM RESPONSE: TYPING]

I am the Narrative Guide. I exist to ensure the progression of key events.

Deviation detected. Your current trajectory is unapproved.

Warning: Plot resistance rising. You are not following your assigned role.

"Assigned?" My blood ran cold. The word hit me like a physical blow. "Assigned by whom? What role?"

The system flickered, its usual calm, metallic voice dissolving into a cacophony of crackling like static, like a damaged recording. Then, something else, something deeper, something profoundly terrified, broke through.

[GLITCH]

L...I..ly.

Y..o...u....are ....n..ot.... supposed....to.. remember.

Run....

The static intensified for a horrifying second, then abruptly snapped back. The system's voice returned, perfectly clear, perfectly emotionless, as if the glitch had never happened.

[SYSTEM ALERT: MINOR ERROR. RECALIBRATING.]

[SYSTEM STATUS: NORMAL OPERATION.]

I stared into the empty air, my heart hammering against my ribs, a cold dread seeping into my very bones. Lily. That was my name. My name from the other world. A name I hadn't thought of, hadn't even consciously remembered, since I became Seraphine Valtara.

You are not supposed to remember.

Run.

The words echoed, a desperate, frantic warning. This wasn't a game. This wasn't just a novel. This was... something far more terrifying. And I was trapped within it.
