Chapter 45 - An Embarrassing Ending

When this incident was reported in the newspaper the next day, it caused shock throughout Japan. Especially when citizens saw the media exaggerating the Soviet fighter planes that swaggered into the airspace above Japan, but no fighter planes dared to intercept them, the public's anger was instantly ignited.

Patriotism is also a breeding ground for militarism and extreme nationalism. Of course, the government cabinet headed by Kaifu Toshiki cannot escape the blame. There are calls for Kaifu Toshiki to step down in the country. Under such circumstances, his political opponents did not miss the opportunity to step on him and began to criticize Kaifu Toshiki's political methods.

By now, it seems that Toshiki Kaifu's resignation is a foregone conclusion.

The Soviet Union and Japan did not reach any verbal agreement in the end, and the arms deal was eventually stopped due to the obstruction of the pro-American faction. However, Pavlov achieved his goal and did not care about the transaction amount. There were many people eyeing this batch of cheap and reliable second-hand arms, and one less of you would be a big deal. In Yanayev's words, "Although I am not interested in a country like you where the cost of a fighter jet is as high as 180 million US dollars and the people are stupid and rich, we will not go against the money in your pockets."

The day Pavlov left Narita Airport was much more depressing than the scene that welcomed him. Kaifu Toshiki even made an excuse of feeling unwell and did not come to see him off. Even so, Pavlov still held his head high as a winner and left the country that had played a trick on him.

The content of the newspaper reports in the Soviet Union was completely the opposite. The story of Yanaev following the Backfire bomber crew to declare the sovereignty of the Southern Kuril Islands to Japan was carefully planned by Surkov of the Soviet Propaganda Department. He was portrayed as a Slavic heroic figure in the newspapers, and the Soviet Union's tough attitude demonstrated its determination to ensure the sanctity of its territorial sovereignty.

Suddenly, Yanaev's frontal photos, wearing a pilot jumpsuit, Ray-Ban sunglasses, and a pilot helmet in his right hand, walking on the tarmac of Nakhodka Airport, were everywhere. Compared with Gorbachev's disappointing and weak image, Yanaev's political show photo instantly won the crazy admiration of Russian youth.

Surkov is obviously much better than the previous propaganda ministers who were "enemies in the Soviet Propaganda Department". Not only did they make a fuss out of the picture of Yanaev's strong return, but they also put a picture of Yanaev holding a little golden retriever and playing with Wen Xi, and a simple slogan, "A man who combines strength and tenderness". It instantly reminded people of the World War II soldiers in the movie who stood by the Volga River and played the accordion with melancholy eyes.

Yanaev gradually created an image of an excellent man with many advantages in the hearts of the simple and kind-hearted Slavic people. Of course, these methods were learned by Yanaev from Putin, who showed off his personal image all day long in his previous life, because he also wanted to create an image of the Soviet savior. Once his image is deeply rooted in the people, any so-called democratic thought offensive can be easily resolved.

After the reform, newspapers began to publish positive images of Yanayev. For example, the editor-in-chief of Spark was thrown into a special mental hospital by the Fifth Bureau of the KGB. What? You said that foreign countries say we have no human rights? Then you must be sick and need treatment. Since then, those democrats who would give up their freedom for their lives have transformed into official writers of the Soviet government.

Suddenly, the right and great Soviet leader Yanayev became a national hero and a dictator denounced in the Western press. But these attacks were as light as feathers and had no killing power.

At this time, Kaifu Junki had no choice but to ask for help from US President Bush. He hoped that the other party could come out to preside over the political situation and at least allow Japan to save some face in this humiliation.

When Bush consulted with his think tank, the chief of staff told Bush not to intervene in the matter for the time being. After all, a plot was being set to strangle the Soviet economy, and being too ostentatious would attract attention. Japan was just a pawn in the United States' efforts to contain China and the Soviet Union. As long as no local war broke out, these diplomatic incidents that would lose face were not important.

Samuel Skinner replied with a disdainful tone, "It is the most ridiculous thing that these monkeys living on the islands and reefs still dream of becoming a political power. Now that they have been taught a lesson, they should be prepared. Even we have to weigh our own weight against polar bears. How can he, an island fisherman, have the courage to challenge the evil empire in the Arctic Circle?"

So, under the advice of Chief of Staff Samuel Skinner, Bush tactfully told Kaifu Toshiki that the United States was unwilling to intervene in the territorial dispute between the Soviet Union and Japan, which was also to respect the sovereignty of the two countries. The smoke bomb was dropped, and the angry Japanese ambassador to the United States directly repeated Bush's prevarication to Kaifu Toshiki.

Kaifu Junshu held the receiver, his hands and feet felt cold. Even the last straw, the US government, warned him to be tolerant on this issue. It seemed that all his efforts to remain in the position of prime minister had failed. Unless Japan resumed the state of war with the Soviet Union, he really couldn't think of how to continue to shine in the position of national leader.

"Damn Russians, you ruined my future, ruined everything I have." Kaifu Junshu slumped in his chair, staring at the ceiling with dull eyes, muttering to himself, as if he had aged a dozen years in an instant. He thought for a moment, dialed another number, and said calmly, "Prepare a speech for me, yes, a resignation speech, I need it tomorrow."

After hanging up the phone, the unwilling Kaifu Toshiki made another call. This time he called the Director-General of the Self-Defense Agency, Gen Nakatani, to explain some things to him. He simply realized that Japan must have a strong armed force to ensure its status in the world. He hoped that Gen Nakatani could continue to complete his unfinished mission and build a modern and powerful Japanese Self-Defense Force.

Nakatani Gen agreed to Kaifu Toshiki's request with a heavy heart. In his mind, abolishing the US-Japan Security Treaty seemed to be a major event that must be accomplished in this life, even though this goal was full of difficulties.

A few days later, Kaifu Toshiki left the Prime Minister's Office, sweeping away the goals and dreams he had fought for. This was a month earlier than the historical resignation, but after his resignation, it was the beginning of Japan's economic nightmare and the beginning of the bursting of the real estate bubble. On the other hand, Kaifu Toshiki was lucky, because the next Prime Minister, Miyazawa Kiichi, would face a more troubled domestic economy.

The era of Kaifu Toshiki came to an end because of a diplomatic incident. He also ended his political career early because of this reason. As for his later appointment as an honorary professor at Peking University or Shenzhen University, it was a long time later.

It's really sad, this is such an embarrassing ending..
