Chapter 8 - 8. The Setup and Sophie's Strategy

The first ray of sun sliced through the blinds, painting a golden stripe across the duvet. Sophie Riel blinked, adjusting to the light, a tiny smile already forming on her lips. Another day. Another day to shine. She stretched, feeling the slight crackle of her joints, a reminder that her body was a finely tuned machine, ready for the show. Cameras were always on in the Ether Tower, and Sophie lived for them. Not for fame itself, but for the validation it brought. Every parkour leap, every fluid movement, every perfectly timed laugh was an opportunity to show her worth, to prove that she was more than just "another participant" in the Ether Games.

She rose with an agile, almost silent leap, and headed to the mirror. Her breathable fabric pajamas didn't do justice to her slender yet muscular figure. She ran a hand through her brown hair, styled in a high ponytail. Her hazel eyes, a vibrant color, inspected every detail. Today felt good. Confident. She thought about yesterday's trial, how Danny had let himself be hit, about Jake's drama. It was a shame, because it meant the cameras had focused on them, on the chaos, instead of on the grace and precision of her own movements during the warm-up. She'd put effort into her stretches, her pre-combat jumps, hoping to capture attention. But Samantha Jens had a knack for redirecting the focus, and yesterday, the focus was on the disqualification, not the art.

She shook her head, her mind already designing strategies for attention. Today, the cameras would have a new angle. She had an idea. An idea involving Ethan Voltaire. She smiled. Ethan, the golden boy, the influencer. Together... people would talk. Hashtags would explode. It didn't matter if the "relationship" was real, only that it was convincing for the audience. Her imagination, unleashed, was already writing the headlines: "Ether Games' New Dream Duo: Sophie and Ethan, more than just teammates?" Oh, yes. This would be perfect.

She chose her training clothes with utmost care: an emerald green compression top that highlighted her toned shoulders and black leggings with reflective details. She wanted to be visible. She wanted her ether to shine, not just for its strength, but for her presence. She misted herself with an energizing citrus-scented spray, a small ritual that gave her a boost of confidence. While brushing her teeth, she practiced a smile in front of the mirror, looking for the perfect angle, one that showed determination without losing likeability. She knew her game was as much physical as psychological, and the image she projected was as important as the strength of her runes. This morning, she also rehearsed some "casual" and "knowing" looks she'd use with Ethan. The key was subtlety. She didn't want to seem desperate, but as if the chemistry was undeniable.

A Meeting of Shine and Invisibility

She went down to the dining hall, the aroma of coffee and toast filling the air. The place was already bustling with other participants, a hotbed of dreams and ambitions. Sophie scanned the room with her media predator gaze. Bingo. She saw Ethan Voltaire at a table, surrounded, as always. He was a magnet for people, his charisma effortlessly radiating, and his golden smile seemed to light up the space. He looked so natural, so carefree. Sophie felt a mix of admiration and a determination to learn from him, to replicate that ease. But this time, she wouldn't just learn, she'd join his orbit.

Sitting next to Ethan, head bowed over a plate of toast, was Danny Mercer, his figure a little more hunched than usual. And, to Sophie's surprise, across from Danny, with a wide smile that rivaled Ethan's, was Rook Sullivan from Team Outlaws. Rook, a dark-haired guy with an open, friendly demeanor, chatted animatedly with Ethan, laughing loudly at something Ethan had just said. They looked like old friends, almost brothers.

The scene was unexpected: Ethan, the popular one; Danny, the outcast; and Rook, the surprisingly sociable. Sophie wondered what kind of conversation could be happening there, though her mind was already more focused on how to insert herself into that dynamic so the cameras would capture the moment.

Ethan, with his usual energy, seemed to be encouraging Danny, offering him his own protein shake while whispering something. Danny looked up, a small smile appearing on his face, and accepted the glass with a gesture of gratitude. Rook, for his part, gave Danny a friendly pat on the shoulder and then turned to continue his conversation with Ethan, something about a new training plan they'd devised together.

With her own fruit smoothie in hand, Sophie approached the table. Before arriving, she took a deep breath, adjusted her smile, and thought about the mental script she'd prepared. She saw Clara Nix, who was laughing heartily, and Tobias Hale, who, surprisingly, wasn't sleeping, but listening with a thoughtful expression.

"Good morning, guys," Sophie said, her voice light and optimistic, trying to make her tone sweet enough to attract attention, but without sounding forced. "Ready for another day of... Samantha's torture?" She cast a quick glance at the ceiling camera, calculating its angle.

Ethan turned, his smile widening, directed at all the newcomers to the table. "Sophie, good morning! Torture? No, woman. Just the daily dose of adrenaline we need. Right, Rook?"

Rook nodded vigorously. "Exactly. Let's hit it hard!" His voice was clear and friendly.

Clara nodded. "Yeah, at least it's better than being bored."

Tobias just mumbled something unintelligible, nodding his head, his eyes seeming to see beyond the surface. Danny shrunk slightly, as if wanting to disappear.

Sophie tried to prolong the conversation, delivering her next line. "Hey, Ethan, how do you always have so much energy? I can barely stand after Samantha's routines." Her voice carried a hint of admiration, a subtle flirtation for the cameras that, she hoped, would capture her, Ethan, and that spark. She wanted him to see her, to acknowledge her, perhaps offer her some influencer advice or even an invitation to train together. She wanted a complication, a sign that he noticed her effort, her presence.

Ethan shrugged, his smile still intact, not catching Sophie's subtle intention. "Ah, discipline, I guess. And a good protein shake." He raised his own glass, the same kind he'd given Danny the day before. "You should try it, it always works. Danny and I have one every morning. Rook should try it too, for that extra energy in the gym!"

His answer was kind, but superficial. Generic advice, not a personal conversation. It was as if he saw her, but didn't perceive her in the way she longed for. The camera, she thought, would it have captured the moment Ethan raised the glass and looked at her? Or had it focused on his exchange with Rook and Danny? Sophie nodded, a pang of disappointment tightening her chest. She sat at the table, her fruit smoothie now feeling less refreshing. She'd put effort into her outfit, her attitude, her attempt at connection, but Ethan, unintentionally, had passed her by. It wasn't a snub, just a lack of attention, a reminder that, despite her efforts, she was still just another piece on the grand Ether Games board, while Ethan was the center of his own universe, and now, Danny and Rook seemed to be firmly planted in it too. She felt like she'd been dancing in a dark room, waiting for someone to turn on the light just for her.
