Chapter 5 - The way he looked at me

Here's a longer, more detailed ve

It was a warm, quiet afternoon, the kind where everything feels just a little slower, a little softer. Later that same day, I found myself chatting with Blae—his friend, a girl I'd just met. We had crossed paths near the library, both with free time and a mutual interest in computers. Our conversation flowed easily, a casual exchange of ideas about programming and how technology quietly shapes the world. Blae was kind, cheerful, and confident, the kind of girl who naturally drew people in.

Then, suddenly, he appeared.

He walked into the hallway, his steps quiet, but his presence unmistakable. The moment our eyes met, everything around me stilled. It was as if time had paused, allowing just that heartbeat between us to echo a little louder. I felt my breath catch.

And then, just as quickly, I looked down.

He said something to Blae in a tone too low for me to catch. She smiled, nodded, and the two of them turned to leave together. My chest tightened as I watched them walk away. Something in the way they moved side by side—comfortable, familiar—made me wonder, Are they in love?

It wasn't just that moment. I'd seen them together before—more times than I could count. Whenever he needed help with assignments or a difficult concept in class, Blae was always there. Always willing. Always patient. They had inside jokes. Easy laughter. A closeness.

And of course, the class noticed. It wasn't long before people started teasing them. Lighthearted at first, then bolder, more insistent. Whispers and laughter trailing after them as they walked by.

Blae would blush—soft pink rising to her cheeks—but she never said much. He, on the other hand, never blushed. He never smiled shyly or laughed it off. Instead, he always seemed… distracted. Like part of him wasn't really there. And sometimes, just sometimes, his eyes would drift toward me when he thought no one was looking.

That day, when the teasing had reached a new high, Blae turned red and tried to wave it off with a smile. Everyone laughed. I stayed quiet.

He wasn't laughing. He was staring.

Right at me.

I don't know what I felt in that moment—confused, vulnerable, a little lost. There was a heaviness in my chest I couldn't shake. When the class ended, I gathered my things and walked straight out, not wanting to talk to anyone, not even Blae.

But as I stepped out of the classroom and into the hallway, I saw something I didn't expect.

He was already outside, standing near the building's main door.

Waiting.

I stopped in my tracks.

He turned, and our eyes met once again. This time, I didn't look away. Not right away. There was something in his gaze—not just curiosity, not just friendship. Something quiet. Something unspoken. Something meant only for me.

And in that moment, I realized… maybe I wasn't invisible after all.

Maybe there was a story still waiting to be written between us.

One that hadn't even begun yet.
