Chapter 3 - Adjusting to Coven Life

Raine spent the first few weeks not only learning managing the covens paperwork, but adjusting to being an expecting parent. Coven work was simple, albeit tedious, with it focusing on the covens finances, its members, tasks and commissions, Coven Operations etc. The pamphlet he received from the hospital made life easier, detailing a good diet plan, an exercise routine that was mostly just walking, stretches and practicing magic. The pamphlet even included dealing with stress and how to cope if you were a single parent. Once in a while, Raine would supervise coven members in their practice and give tips to improvement, as well as attending events that had the bard coven performing.

* Six Months Later*

While Raine juggled his responsibilities while taking care of himself, he would every so often try and contact Eda. He didn't outright tell her he was expecting a kid since he didn't know what was going on with her, rather it was just trying to get her attention for a small over the phone chat or asking what she was up too. He also occasionally saw on his crystal ball and scroll Eda going around causing trouble every so often. Coven work had become easy for him, with only having to spend between two to six hours going through paper, most of the day was spent relaxing and playing his viola.

One day, he went to Bones Borough to visit the library, on his way however, he witnessed a old witch alongside a boy who was in a Hexside uniform being thrown into cart that was used to bring criminals to the Conformitorium, Raine was quite confused and decided to walk over to a bystander. "Why were they thrown into that cart?" inquired Raine as a blue demon with a horn growing above his left eye looked at him. "Old Granny Mippit was found buying stolen Palistrom wood to carve her grandson a Palisman, they didn't manage to identify or catch the seller though" said the blue demon. Raine looked back at the duo who were holding the bars of the cart, they had very indignant faces. Raine scratched his chin, he didn't like what he witnessed and found the reason for them being hauled to the Conformitorium as wrong, even if it was stolen Palistrom wood, how could they be to blame since the Emperors Coven pretty much hogged almost all of it to themselves while very little was sold from the Plant Coven at unfairly high price. Gaining a Palisman was a long time tradition, but slowly it was becoming harder and harder for the younger generation to gain one, he looked over at a brown haired witch, he seemed to be around 20 and didn't have a Palisman, Raine could tell as Palisman usually gave off a strong presence of Magic that was noticeable by a trained witch.

As Raine continued walking, he noticed that a lot of people didn't have palismans, even the esteemed Coven Scouts, he walked up to one. "Hey, do you guys have palismans?" asked Raine as a coven scout a little shorter than him looked at him. "I used too, but had to give Puff up when I joined the Emperors Coven" said the scout with a trace of sadness. Raine looked at the scout and then walked off, continuing to the library, when he noticed a demon who was apprehended, he walked over and overheard how the said demon always had children's toys and how he played with them in public. As the demon was thrown into a cart, Raine pulled Fiddlestick into her Viola form and played a hypnotic tune, causing the drivers to pull over to a alleyway where he knocked them out with bard magic and walked up to the entrance of the holding space of the cart. He played a sharp note and cut the lock and helped the demon out. The demon was a blue squid who was holding onto multiple dolls with its appendages. "Why were you captured?" asked Raine as he looked at the demon, "This may seem weird but I like to play with dolls, people don't really seem to like that since I am quite old, 37 by the way" said the squid demon as he looked down at the dolls with a sad face.

Raine looked into the demons eyes, "Is there a reason?" the demons attention shifted to Raine, "I had a younger sister, she died when I was much younger because of an accident" said the demon as he looked down. "These were her dolls, we used to walk around Bones Borough playing, I guess it's hard to move on, even though a lot of people around me give me strange looks and unpleasant comments, I still go around reliving fond memories" said the demon as a tear fell down his face. "Listen, you have to get out of here" said Raine, his face was dark, the demon looked at him and gave thanks as he ran off. Raine continued on the the library, thinking about recent events, he had to do more research, the reason these people were being labeled as criminals for small things was unreasonable. Then a thought came to him, Eda was always a troublemaker, however she never did anything wrong when she was younger, even though she was a troublemaker, she was first considered a criminal when her curse first appeared, she was shunned and outcasted.

As Raine arrived to the library, he returned the books and checked out new ones, as he returned to his home, Raine decided that he had to know more, he would start planning for now as his abilities were limited at the moment, but he wouldn't hesitate when it was time to strike.
