Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Crimson Temptation

---

🕯️ Morning – Kuoh Academy Grounds

The early sunlight stretched across the Kuoh Academy campus, setting the brick walls aglow with a warm orange tint. The usual morning bustle of students arriving was subdued for now, as many were still nursing sleepy eyes or chatting in small clusters.

Kaizen Amos lingered near the main gate, hands buried casually in the pockets of his school uniform. His sharp eyes scanned the grounds with subtle calculation, reading not just the people but the invisible magical residue that floated faintly in the air.

「Update: Subject Issei Hyoudou revived by Rias Gremory. Boosted Gear synchronization now at 6%. Healing complete. Memory altered. Sacred Gear signature stable but reactive.」

The voice of Raphael, his internal AI-like adviser, whispered quietly in his mind, feeding data in near real-time. The arcane and spiritual signals were faint but distinct — a sacred gear awakening in a human host, sealed beneath a veneer of typical high school confusion.

Kaizen closed his eyes and breathed in deeply, feeling the subtle shift in energy. She moved fast. Rias Gremory had pulled off a miracle that many would have considered impossible.

The crimson-haired heiress of the Gremory Clan… a High-Class Devil and a master who commands fear and respect alike.

He smirked. This was no ordinary school drama. This was a battlefield. And Kaizen didn't mind skipping the usual boring buildup.

🧃 Midday – Classroom 2-B

Inside Classroom 2-B, the atmosphere was thick with a mix of curiosity and unease. Students whispered under their breath as they stole glances at the newly revived Issei Hyoudou. He sat two rows ahead, his face pale and confused, his eyes darting to his hand as if expecting it to bite him.

Kaizen leaned back in his chair, tilting it precariously on two legs, eyes calm yet piercing. His presence drew subtle attention without him trying.

「Subject: Rias Gremory has entered the building, flanked by Akeno Himejima. Approach trajectory: Direct. Intent: High.」

He heard the soft click of the classroom door sliding open and the room instantly fell silent.

The figure standing there was like a living flame — Rias Gremory. Her long crimson hair cascaded over her shoulders, shining like molten rubies. Her blue-green eyes gleamed with a confidence that both invited and warned.

Beside her stood Akeno Himejima, her smile serene and teasing, the embodiment of grace and danger wrapped in silk.

"Kaizen Amos, right?" Rias's voice was gentle but held unmistakable command.

All eyes fixed on him.

Kaizen offered a polite smile, standing with smooth ease. "That's me."

"Mind stepping out for a moment? We'd like to have a word," she said.

Without hesitation, he followed the two girls into the hallway, the soft murmur of the classroom fading behind him.

📚 Empty Corridor – Moments Later

By a tall window overlooking the sprawling sports field, the sunlight framed Rias in an almost divine glow. The breeze teased loose strands of her crimson hair, adding an ethereal quality to her presence.

Kaizen met her gaze with measured calm, refusing to be intimidated.

"I've been meaning to speak with you," Rias said, her tone shifting to something sharper. "You're… unusual. Even more so than Issei."

Kaizen tilted his head, amused. "Is that so?"

Akeno's voice joined softly, teasing yet probing. "Your aura doesn't match any normal human. Not even a Devil's. It's like looking into a void that thinks."

Kaizen's eyes locked with hers, unwavering. "Perhaps that's because I think deeper than most."

「Caution: Both subjects initiating passive probing. Mental shielding and aura modulation in effect. No data leaked.」

Raphael's alert made him smirk inwardly. He was prepared.

Rias's eyes narrowed slightly. "Then who are you really, Kaizen Amos?"

"Just a student," he said, the corners of his lips twitching into a disarming smile, "trying to understand this strange, wonderful place."

The silence between them crackled with unspoken challenges and veiled curiosity.

"You're not afraid of Devils," she said bluntly.

Kaizen chuckled, low and smooth. "I'm not afraid of many things, Rias Gremory. Least of all people pretending to be monsters."

Rias stepped closer, the air thickening between them. "And if we were monsters?"

Kaizen's voice dropped an octave, velvet and confident. "Then I'd ask if you wanted to dance."

Akeno's soft giggle broke the tension. "He's bold, I like that."

Rias smiled, a rare, genuine curve of her lips. "We'll be watching you, Kaizen. Consider that a friendly warning."

Kaizen nodded slowly. "And I'll be watching back."

They turned and walked away, leaving him with the electric aftertaste of the encounter.

「Analysis: Rias suspects anomalous nature but lacks evidence. Trust: 37%. Interest: 68%. Threat level: 55%. Akeno's interest is... personal.」

He grinned to himself. I'm in.

🌘 Nightfall – Abandoned Church

Far from the academy's lights, in a desolate corner of the city, the corrupted aura of fallen angels hung thick like a toxic fog.

Inside the ruins of an old church, Raynare knelt before a pale, crimson-eyed man—Donaseek—while Kalawarner and Mittelt lounged nearby with practiced casualness.

"Issei Hyoudou survived," Raynare hissed through clenched teeth. "Someone interfered."

Donaseek slammed his fist against a cracked pillar. "Rias Gremory must have revived him."

"No," Raynare said, shaking her head. "There was another presence. A strange one. I felt it. Cold. Alien."

Kalawarner stood slowly, eyes narrowing. "Another Devil?"

"No. Something else."

Unknown to them, Kaizen was already watching. Hidden in the shadows, crouched silently in the church rafters like a ghost.

「Recording aura frequencies. Weak points identified. Raynare: unstable. Donaseek: overconfident. Kalawarner: cautious.」

「Recommendation: Stealth approach for future extraction.」

He vanished into the night.

🏠 Late Night – Kaizen's Room

Back home, Kaizen sat cross-legged on the floor of his dimly lit room. Around him floated dozens of glowing holographic sigils—arcane patterns weaving and shifting in the air like living runes.

He was building something.

「Commencing Sacred Gear Replica Prototype: Phase One. Core Base: Fused Demonic Residue + Mana Crystal (Synthetic). Infusion failed. Result unstable. Reabsorbing essence.」

His brow furrowed.

"Sacred Gears aren't just magic and metal," he muttered. "They're soul-bound."

「Affirmative. Required: Core of belief. Emotional ignition point. Sacred Gears form when divine will meets mortal desire.」

"I need to witness more… trauma, evolution, crisis," Kaizen said quietly.

He rose, stretching as his mind raced through endless permutations.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

[You're not who you pretend to be. Meet me behind the gym. Midnight.]

Kaizen raised an eyebrow. "Well now… who do we have here?"

---

⛩️ Midnight – Kuoh Academy Gymnasium

Moonlight bathed the empty gym grounds in silvery light. Kaizen walked calmly, hands deep in his pockets, senses alive like sonar.

He felt her before he saw her.

Koneko Toujou.

The petite white-haired Devil with the strength of a monster, a rook on Rias's team.

She stepped out silently from the shadows, golden eyes burning with cold determination.

No expression. No words.

Just challenge.

"So. They sent the kitten."

Koneko said nothing.

Instead, she leapt forward—a blur of raw speed and power.

Kaizen didn't dodge.

He caught her fist.

The impact cracked the concrete beneath their feet. Her eyes widened slightly—the first crack in her impassive mask.

"Impressive," Kaizen said, gripping her wrist, "but not enough."

Koneko twisted sharply, landing a kick to his ribs. He allowed himself to be pushed back a step, then vanished before her next strike.

「Teleportation complete. Position: 3 meters behind.」

"You rely too much on raw power," Kaizen whispered.

She spun, but he blocked, parried, and placed a hand on her forehead.

A pulse of mental energy surged between them.

「Initiating Low-Level Memory Scan. Subject resistance: High. Bypassed via emotional fracture. Trauma detected: Sister. Betrayal. Fear of self.」

Kaizen released her gently.

Koneko stumbled, clutching her head. "What… what are you…?"

He crouched to her level, voice soft.

"Someone who understands pain. And power. You don't have to be afraid of either."

Her golden eyes flickered with confusion and vulnerability.

"Go home, Koneko. Tell Rias I'm not her enemy. Not yet."

She blinked, then melted back into the shadows.

🌌 Rooftop – Post-Midnight

Kaizen stood atop Kuoh Academy's roof, moonlight spilling over him like a spotlight.

The chessboard was assembling.

He had met the King—Rias. The Queen—Akeno. The Rook—Koneko. And the Pawn—Issei.

The Fallen were restless.

And Kaizen?

He was evolving.

One observation, one battle, one subtle manipulation at a time.

「Would you like to initiate Synthesis on Sacred Gear Insight + Devil Combat Sync? Result: Hybrid Perception Trait.」

"Do it."

「Fusion complete: NEW TRAIT ACQUIRED」

Evolved Trait: Gearflow Intuition — Kaizen could now sense when someone activated, suppressed, or manipulated a Sacred Gear or Devil Piece nearby. Future upgrades would enable counteractions.

Kaizen smiled faintly.

He was getting closer.

The devils were only beginning to realize the real threat wasn't Rias Gremory.

It was him.
