Chapter 74: Rookie mistake

Julius's hand stayed on his glasses, but his eyes shone with a brilliant, calculated gleam. This wasn't the usual expression that he should be making.

Everyone, including Zigi, knew that, and that was why he went for the weakest one among them in the first place.

Julius should be in full-blown panic mode.

But he wasn't. He was even smirking. "House leader, it appears that your calculations are right. The Cursed Strategist only affects the main ability, but the others are still working just fine. They were just weaker."

What. The. Fuck. free𝑤ebnovel.com

Derrick and the others couldn't keep up with what he was saying. Even though they were in the same group, they had never heard him say things like that before or seen him act so confident in front of danger.

Zigi also felt it—a shift in the air that he couldn't put his hands on—but he knew his control of the situation was loosening. He wasn't in absolute control anymore.

It felt as if they weren't taking him seriously. They weren't giving him attention.

His face darkened, and his aura pressure swelled once more, turning the air thick. His voice came out like grating metal. "I have changed my mind. I will kill all of you."

Severin, on the other hand, had returned to his calm state, as if he wasn't just about to split fire from his eyes earlier. His eyes were on Julius, above whose head a small halo spun gently.

"You know one flaw I hate about most villains? Especially those like you, Zigi?"

Severin didn't give him time to reply. "You guys are always lost in the illusions of your victories. You like to gloat and lack decisiveness. Instead of executing your plans, you like to show your victims how good you are."

Severin didn't know if it was how most writers wrote them, but he was glad for that little flaw, and he had used it to his advantage. He shrugged. "But maybe it's human nature, for those that have the upper hand to also have the right to drag things on just because they can."

Severin clapped as he finished speaking.

At that point, Zigi was confused, but he knew an insult when he heard one.

And he didn't like it.

But several things happened then.

The ash cage around them shuddered, and a spike that flexed like living tentacles darted down with a cutting edge toward Zigi, who raised his hand to slap it away.

That movement created a split second where his hands were away from Julius. A small space where he could escape—but Zigi was a level above them and faster.

And that was where Ethan came in.

He made the space around Zigi heavy—specifically his right side—which slowed down his speed and surprised him enough that Julius made his escape to Severin's side.

Everything started from Severin's clap, and it didn't take up to five blinks.

Teamwork. It was something that Severin had been working on since he got the House members together. Julius usually provided different scenarios for them to practice on.

Julius released a breath. "I thought I was going to die."

Zigi stared at them in surprise. "How..."

Severin decided then to cut things to the point. "You have only seconds left. Tell me who the other spies in the Academy are!"

Zigi looked at him as if he were insane. A smile curved his lips. "You fools. You think some people are going to come here and interrupt me? My Talent Ability is 'See Me Not,' and it's more complicated than you think. I can make everyone in this training center forget everything they are thinking—all to create the desired effect of them not seeing me!"

Severin shook his head. "You had a Crane in your hand. Although their ability is to strategize, they still have the power to protect themselves against mental attacks, including those around them—because what use is a strategist when his people are getting messed with?"

It was part of what Severin wanted to try out with Julius since the day he accepted to join his House. But it wasn't until recently that Julius actually let his suspicions go and began to really trust Severin, which made him loyal.

Severin was able to use his powers on him.

And so they brought out that side of their ability where they are able to protect against mental attacks.

Zigi laughed. "You think this is the first time I'm getting attacked by mental powers? You think you can protect everyone in the room, in this center, against my powers?"

Julius adjusted his glasses. His face was strained, as if he were withstanding great pressure. "Right now, I have the power of one of the strongest Awakened stage."

With Severin's boost to an already A-ranked Awakened stage, he was right.

"And I don't have to protect everyone's eyes from you. I just have to protect yourself against yourself," he said.

It was simple.

Why protect against someone shooting when you can just take the shooter out? That was exactly what Julius did.

He used his powers like a blanket, wrapping it around Zigi so that now, he couldn't use his power against people.

It was the most effective way to deal with him.

The look on Zigi's face twisted as he realized. His eyes widened because for the first time in his life, his ability was stripped away from him. "You little bastards."

And the reason why it happened was simple.

He underestimated them. And although, given some minutes, he would break away from the mental shield with his own power—it was minutes he didn't have.

He made a rookie mistake. He underestimated.

What can the weakest student in the Academy do with a team?

He learned his lesson too late.

But he was still at the Refined Stage, the rank above the Awakened Stage. Even without his mental power, his body was more powerful and stronger than theirs.

So what if they were preventing his ability from working?

He'd just kill them all.

His legs flexed, and he took a single leap at Julius. His hands blurred, and two silver daggers appeared in them.

There was simply no way for Julius to dodge what was coming.
