Naruto: Avatar of Balance
Chapter 6: Roots and Sparks
Konoha's training fields were alive with the hum of cicadas, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows. Suzuki stood alone in Training Ground 3, sweat beading on his brow as he faced a row of wooden dummies. His hands moved in a slow arc, pulling a gust of wind that sliced a dummy's arm clean off. He grinned, the pulse in his chest steady—his windbending was getting sharper.
Two weeks had passed since the Land of Waves, and the weight of Haku's sacrifice still lingered. Suzuki saw it in Naruto's quieter moments, Sasuke's sharper glares, even Sakura's gentler tone. But Team 7 was stronger for it, and Suzuki felt it too—a sense of belonging he'd never known as an orphan.
"Gale Step!" he called, channeling wind to propel himself forward, dodging imaginary attacks. He landed, then stomped, raising a small stone slab. "Stone Sentinel!" The earthbending was still clumsy, nowhere near his water or wind, but it felt solid, grounding him.
The Land of Waves had awakened something in him. Waterbending to shield Naruto, earthbending to block Gato's thugs—each element tied to that pulse, the "Avatar" power the spiritual world's voice spoke of. But he needed control, especially with the Chunin Exams looming. Kakashi had warned them: Konoha was hosting, and every village would bring their best.
"Not bad, Ghost Boy!" Naruto's voice rang out. He bounded into the field, ramen bowl in hand, followed by Sakura and a reluctant Sasuke. "You're like a one-man jutsu factory!"
Suzuki flushed, lowering his hands. "Just training. Gotta keep up with you."
Sakura crossed her arms, smiling. "You saved us back there, Suzuki. That water shield was amazing."
Sasuke snorted, leaning against a tree. "It was sloppy. You're wasting chakra with those big moves."
Suzuki bristled but held his tongue. Sasuke wasn't wrong—his bending was raw, draining him too fast. "I'm working on it," he said, meeting Sasuke's gaze.
Naruto slung an arm around Suzuki. "Ignore the jerk, dattebayo! Let's train together! I'm gonna master my clones for the Chunin Exams!"
Kakashi appeared in a puff of smoke, his book in hand. "Training's good, but teamwork's better. Suzuki, your… techniques are unique, but you need precision. Naruto, less yelling, more focus. Sasuke, stop brooding. Sakura, keep studying."
Sakura nodded eagerly, Naruto groaned, and Sasuke just grunted. Suzuki felt Kakashi's eye on him, sharp despite the lazy tone. "Suzuki, meet me here tomorrow. We're working on your chakra control."
As the team dispersed, Suzuki lingered, the pulse stirring. He needed answers about his elements—especially the one he hadn't touched: fire.
---
That night, Suzuki sat cross-legged in his attic, the orphanage silent below. He closed his eyes, breathing deeply, seeking the spiritual world. The pulse thrummed, and the attic faded. He stood on the misty island, clouds swirling below, elemental symbols glowing on floating platforms. The Raava-Sage figure appeared, its form shimmering with chakra, robes flowing like water.
"You grow," it said, voice resonant. "Wind flows freely, water protects, earth grounds. But fire awaits, the element of will. Are you ready?"
Suzuki's throat tightened. Fire scared him—its hunger, its destruction. He'd seen Sasuke's Fireball Jutsu, the way it consumed. "I don't know if I can control it," he admitted. "What if I hurt someone?"
"Fire is life as much as death," the figure said. "It warms, it drives. Balance its spark with your heart's purpose. Your past life's virtue guides you—protect, do not destroy."
A vision flashed: Suzuki conjuring a flame, small but steady, illuminating a dark forest. He stood with Team 7, their faces lit by the glow, trust in their eyes. The figure's voice echoed: "Fire begins with courage. Seek it in your trials, and trust your team."
The island faded, and Suzuki opened his eyes, his hands warm. A tiny spark flickered on his palm, then vanished. His heart raced—firebending was real, but it felt dangerous, untamed. He needed Kakashi's help.
---
The next morning, Suzuki met Kakashi at Training Ground 3. The Jonin leaned against a tree, book in hand, but his eye was alert. "Your wind and water are instinctual," Kakashi said. "That earth move was new, but it's rough. Explain how you're doing this."
Suzuki hesitated. The spiritual world sounded insane, but Kakashi had seen his bending. "It's… chakra, but different. I feel a pulse, like a second heartbeat. It lets me move wind, water, earth. There's another element—fire—but I haven't figured it out."
Kakashi's eye narrowed. "Multiple chakra natures without a Kekkei Genkai? That's rare for a civilian. Show me."
Suzuki nodded, focusing. He raised his hands, summoning a gust of wind that rustled the trees. "Gale Step!" He moved fast, then shifted to water, pulling moisture from the air into a small orb. "Tide Whip!" Finally, he stomped, raising a shaky stone slab. "Stone Sentinel!" He tried for fire, but only a faint spark appeared, fizzling out.
Kakashi watched, silent. "Your chakra control's decent, but you're splitting focus across elements. Most ninja master one nature first. Why all four?"
Suzuki looked away. "I don't choose. It's… part of me. Like I was meant to."
Kakashi closed his book, a rare seriousness in his tone. "Meant to, huh? Konoha's seen stranger things. For now, refine what you've got. Wind's your strongest—use it to boost your speed. Water and earth for defense. Fire… we'll get to that."
They trained for hours, Kakashi pushing Suzuki to weave wind into his taijutsu, dodging kunai with Gale Step. By noon, Suzuki was exhausted but faster, his movements sharper. Kakashi tossed him a scroll. "Chakra control exercises. Practice daily. The Chunin Exams won't wait."
Suzuki caught it, gratitude swelling. "Thanks, Kakashi-sensei."
Kakashi's eye crinkled. "Don't thank me yet. You're on Team 7—trouble finds us."
---
That afternoon, Suzuki trained with Team 7. Naruto's shadow clones swarmed, Sasuke's shuriken flew, and Sakura practiced traps. Suzuki used wind to dodge Naruto's attacks, water to block Sasuke's projectiles, and earth to shield Sakura's setups. For the first time, he felt in sync with them.
"Nice one, Ghost Boy!" Naruto cheered, high-fiving him. Sakura smiled, and even Sasuke gave a grudging nod. Suzuki's chest warmed—not just the pulse, but something human.
As the sun set, Suzuki practiced alone, trying fire again. He focused on the spark from the spiritual world, picturing a flame that warmed, not burned. A small fire flickered in his palm, steady for a moment before flaring wildly. He yelped, shaking it out, but grinned. Progress.
The pulse thrummed, and he heard the Raava-Sage's voice: "Courage kindles fire. Your trials approach." The Chunin Exams were coming, and with them, new dangers. But Suzuki wasn't alone anymore. Team 7 was his anchor, his purpose.
He looked at Konoha's skyline, the Hokage Rock glowing in the dusk. "Avatar," he whispered. "I'm ready to try."
