Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: So… Which One’s the Hero?

A blinding flash later, the group found themselves standing inside a lavish, old-school medieval throne room. Marble pillars stretched to the ceiling, stained-glass windows beamed rainbow light, and a long red carpet led to a golden throne.

Sitting upon it, a grand, bearded man dressed in royal garb leaned forward eagerly.

King Aldebrand: "Welcome, brave Hero! Our kingdom has long awaited your arrival to save us from the Demon Lord's terror!"

He spread his arms wide.

King Aldebrand: "Please… step forward, Hero!"

The 26 newcomers exchanged awkward glances.

Aiko: "…Which one of us is it?"

Daichi: "It's obviously not me."

Ms. Sato: "I'm a teacher, not a hero."

Takeshi: "I mean, I did drive a truck into your dimension, so maybe?"

The king squinted.

King Aldebrand: "Hold on… why are there so many of you?"

A royal advisor nervously stepped up, whispering in the king's ear.

Advisor: "Your Majesty… it seems the summoning circle may have… uh… slightly malfunctioned."

King Aldebrand: "Slightly? There's twenty-six of them!"

The god from earlier materialized in a puff of smoke, looking sheepish.

God: "Yeah… sorry about that. Bit of a logistics issue. Meant to summon one hero… ended up with twenty-six. But it's fine! One of them has a cheat skill."

He pointed to Takeshi.

God: "This guy."

The room went silent.

Aiko: "Wait, it's the truck driver?!"

Hiroshi: "You've gotta be kidding me!"

Takeshi: "Oi, don't look at me like that! I didn't ask for this! One second I'm enjoying a coffee, next thing you know I'm airborne!"

The king coughed, trying to maintain dignity.

King Aldebrand: "Very well… um… Hero, what is your cheat ability?"

Takeshi straightened his back with pride.

Takeshi: "My Fuso Shogun 510 will never break down, and it has unlimited fuel."

A beat of silence.

Ms. Sato: "…That's it?"

Daichi: "Can it at least fly?"

Takeshi: "Not yet."

The king blinked.

King Aldebrand: "I… see. Well… transportation is important."

The god awkwardly cleared his throat.

God: "As for the rest of you — no cheats. But I told them they could each make a wish to help them survive in this world."

Aiko: "Can we do that now?"

God: "Sure, one per person."

The students' eyes lit up.

Daichi: "I wish for a sword!"

A small iron sword appeared in his hands.

Aiko: "I want a magic staff!"

A sparkly, probably overpriced staff materialized.

One by one, the others made their wishes: shields, potions, armor, money, a pet rabbit named Usapyon.

Ms. Sato sighed.

Ms. Sato: "I wish for a clean bath every day."

A shining bathroom key appeared in her hand.

Takeshi: "You lot think small. You can't beat the open road."

The king cleared his throat again.

King Aldebrand: "Now then… Heroes, please save our kingdom from the Demon Lord's army. Defeat him, and you shall be granted the way back to your world."

The students exchanged wary looks.

Hiroshi: "Wait… how strong is this Demon Lord?"

The royal advisor stepped forward, holding a long scroll.

Advisor: "He commands legions of monsters, has destroyed five kingdoms, and his power is said to rival that of a god."

Aiko: "We're screwed."

Daichi: "Takeshi-san, can your truck run him over?"

Takeshi scratched his chin.

Takeshi: "If you build me a proper road to his castle, sure."

The king sweatdropped.

King Aldebrand: "I… shall see what we can do."

The god stretched.

God: "Welp, my job's done. Good luck, suckers."

With a poof, he vanished again.

Leaving the students, the teacher, and one overly attached truck driver standing dumbfounded in a throne room in a world they barely understood.

Takeshi: "Well… who's hungry? I vote we find a diner."

Aiko: "We're in a medieval world! There's no diner!"

Takeshi: "We'll make one. Shogun and me got this."

Everyone groaned.
