Abbigail and Denny set off first thing in the morning. Luna took to the sky once the sun was up. The Eye was leading them westward, and they followed it back and past Atariaxia, along the mountain range, and along what looked like a major trade route, with people hustling and bustling next to them. Abbigail knew Luna would have liked to come down more, but it couldn't be helped. Too many people were around them and they had to dive into the woods to have lunch. Not to mention the Eye. Two people following a creepy stone like some forsaken disciple is too weird, so they could only check directions when they were hidden by trees.
About a week later, they came upon a large city sandwiched between two jarring peaks. "Twin Pass" read the plaque over the gate, but before they could approach and see the archway clearly, the Eye lead them off the main road, towards a small castle on the north side of the city.
"I've been 'ere before." Denny pointed to the city in the distance as they branched off a dirt trail. "The farm provides some o' the food here, and I was the delivery guy, not that I complained. I always preferred a chan' of scenery. But it's always hard on me to leave home, especially the creatures like Rusty."
Shortly, they came upon the castle. "Who goes there?" Shouted the guard. "State your business and purpose for entering the Enchanting School of Conchord!"
"Umm…" Abbigail hesitated. "We…are looking for someone inside."
"Okay, do you have their name?"
"Well, we are following this emerald that appears to have a mind of its own…" Abbigail showed him the Eye.
The guard remained emotionless, as if everyday two lunatics came up to the gate claiming they were after a shiny green rock. "Alright, I'll report to the headmaster, wait here." He turned and walked inside while another guard took his place.
Abbigail felt it convenient to prove their story if Luna was around, so she called her down. Luna looked super happy to finally have her feet on grass for the longest time in days.
"Clang!" The gates opened and the guard escorted an elderly man out. "Headmaster," said the guard, "These are the people I told you about, and what is that creature?!" Luna snorted.
"So, you followed an Enchanted emerald here?" The man asked. Although his hair was all white and he was thin and lanky, his voice boomed with strength and power. "And is that an Ender Dragon?"
"Well, yes." Abbigail answered. "Do you recognize this artefact?" She held up the Eye.
"By obsidian! This is an Eye of the End! It is an ancient artefact forged by the first Enderking, King Conchor!" exclaimed the headmaster. "Never thought I'd see it here at my school! Legend has it, every new generation of Enderknights were found by it. Although," he studied Abbigail, "there has never been a female among them."
"Yes, well, I never thought of becoming one."
"Come in, come in. We'll make sure you find your next knight!" The headmaster beckoned them inside.
There wasn't much in the castle. The middle courtyard is divided into many sections, where students and staff tested out their enchants. Classrooms were built into the castle walls, and occasionally, a brilliant purple light flashed from one of the windows.
"Here are our testing grounds and our enchantment chambers." Introduced the headmaster. "We have some smaller rooms on the towers where the spells require… ahem!" He cleared his throat, "special attention." Abbigail looked up. Such a mosaic were the towers' walls that she wondered how many times they have been rebuilt.
Meanwhile, the Eye floated directly to the far end of the castle. "Ah, looks like it's one of our high apprentice enchanters." Said the headmaster. They followed the Eye into the middle building of the castle, to the side of the main tower.
"This is our Great Hall." The headmaster pointed to a massive door on their right. "Usually, it's our dining hall." Abbigail peeked through the doors and saw a giant room whose roof was no doubt held together by enchants. It perfectly replicated the sky and clouds outside. Under the dome, students chittered and chattered as they ate food that constantly appeared from the plates in the middle.
The Eye led them up a staircase to the fifth floor and stopped before a door. The plaque on it read: "Alexander, High Apprentice."
"Seems you found your Enderknight." said the headmaster. "Well, I'd better return to my office, please send word if you need anything."
"Thank you, headmaster. You have been most kind." Replied Abbigail. After the headmaster left, they knocked on the door.
"Hallo, kann I hilfe you?" A boy a head taller than Abbigail opened the door. "Ah, gott dat ding away from me!" The Eye floated towards him and, to Abbigail's surprise, went through him. The Eye turned into a smaller room, and the sound of a crashing chair sounded from inside.
"Help! Someone!" Abbigail pushed the student aside and rushed in to find a brown-haired teen quivering on the floor as the Eye hovered over him. He had blue eyes and a clean-shaven face.
"It's okay." Assured Abbigail. She helped the student off the floor.
"Thanks, but aren't you inside the boys' dormitory?" he asked, "I don't think you are allowed here, especially if you are new."
"Oh," blushed Abbigail. She hadn't realized that. "Um, I'm not a student. I'm looking for someone, and that person appears to be you. What's your name?"
"Trevor." The boy answered. "Just Trevor. My family are shopkeepers in Twin Pass and I just came here. I didn't expect this at all."
"Me neither. The Eye led me here." Abbigail plucked the Eye out of the air and placed it in her sack. "I'm looking for the new Enderknights."
"No way. I want to be an Enchanter. I don't want to be some dragon knight." said Trevor, hugging his books. "I barely started here."
"Well, I didn't choose you, the Eye did, or whatever is controlling it." Abbigail replied. "All this is still mystical to me as well, so I'm not sure why it's you either. All I know is that you need to come with us. You can bring your studies if you want. We could use an enchanter among our ranks."
Trevor gave in. "Alright, give me a sec." He took out a small case and began stuffing his books inside.
Abbigail exited to find Denny and the other student both looking inside. "Say, I kaan become ein Ender-night." The student said when Abbigail came out the door. "Naamer's Alexander, by the way."
"I'm afraid that's not how it works, Alexander." Abbigail said. "To be one you have to be chosen."
"Oh, das ist gut. Guess I'll just be the Anchanteur in the family then." Alexander retracted his hand as Trevor exited his room with a small case. "Saafe travels, little cousin." Alexander showed them out the door.
