Chapter 35
“In two days, our esteemed guests will grace Birch Castle with their presence,” Damien said. “As the Duchess, I trust you will do everything in your power to ensure they feel welcome.”
“Indeed, I shall.”
Though Chloe no longer found joy in the pomp and revelry of entertaining guests, playing hostess was not beyond her capabilities. The task merely entailed parading dishes that catered to the tastes of their visitors, participating in their banter with appropriate decorum, and ensuring she didn’t overstep her welcome in her own home.
Chloe bit her lip, her gaze locked intently on the billiard ball. Her aim wavered slightly, yet the ball eked its way into the corner pocket. The game would be concluded if she could secure the final black ball.
“Lady Isabella will be among the attendees. She can be a challenging woman, so it would be in your best interest to pay her particular attention,” Damien cautioned.
