Chapter 1 - Chapter 0: World Without Magic

The sky had no stars that night.

Not because they had vanished—

But because Kaelen had silenced them.

Above the ruined world, a floating obsidian spire pierced the clouds like a monument to defiance. Carved into its peak was a ritual circle alive with motion—serpentine runes crawling, rotating, reshaping. Each line was older than civilization, each glyph stolen from forgotten realms.

And standing at its heart, surrounded by a sphere of swirling blue-gold mana, was a man.

Tall, cloaked in pitch-black ceremonial robes trimmed with starlight thread, Kaelen—the 9th-Level Magician—gazed up at the churning void above. His face, ageless yet tired, reflected neither fear nor joy. Only focus.

"Nine levels… and still I crawl."

The heavens above him twisted open—not with divine acceptance, but reluctant acknowledgment. The Gate Beyond Magic shimmered into existence. A vast, ethereal ring of rotating glyphs, fractal light, and something that pulsed like a heartbeat of law.

No magician had ever stood this close to it. Most died attempting Level 8.

Kaelen had rewritten the path to Level 9.

Now, he would do what even the gods feared:

Attempt Level 10.

He raised his hands. Runes leapt from his fingertips.

He chanted in Ancient Arcana—a language that didn't belong to reality.

> "By will, I command the flame.

By flame, I command the soul.

By soul, I devour the veil."

The ritual exploded into motion. The circle beneath him expanded, fusing with the ley lines stretching across the sky. Earth shook. The clouds bled red.

The Gate opened wider—then froze.

Kaelen's breath caught.

Something was wrong.

The light darkened. The glyphs reversed. A sound—like the cracking of fate—rang across the realm.

> [ INITIATION: DENIED. SOUL STRUCTURE: UNACCEPTABLE. ASCENSION REJECTED. ]

Lightning lashed from the Gate, not with power—but with judgment.

Kaelen's body shuddered as mana backfired, ripping through his flesh. His skin blistered, his veins glowed white-hot.

His bones cracked as if the heavens themselves were trying to erase him.

Still, he laughed.

> "You deny me?

You think this ends with denial?"

He looked up at the collapsing sky, eyes burning with unyielding light.

> "Then I will not ascend.

I will scatter.

Let the next world carry my legacy."

As the Gate detonated into raw cosmic force, Kaelen's soul exploded—splintering into a thousand fragments. Most were lost to the void…

But one fragment—bound to the Arcane Codex—activated.

A narrow thread of light shot into the darkness. The ritual site imploded behind it.

Kaelen's voice whispered into the void, fading.

> "Let magic crawl where it was never meant to…

Let the heavens tremble at the memory of me."

---

The rain had no pity that night.

It fell over the dusty rooftops of a nameless mountain town, soaking its stone paths and clay walls, washing away footprints and failures alike. Lightning cracked in the distance, but no one noticed the boy walking barefoot through the mud—drunk, soaked, and forgotten.

Lin Kai, second son of the Lin family, once dreamed of flying on swords like the heroes in story scrolls. Now he couldn't even afford wine.

He had been slapped by the Zhao girl again—loudly, publicly. His father hadn't even raised an eyebrow when he returned. Instead, he'd whispered to the others at dinner:

> "If only he had died young. Without a root, he's nothing but a stain on our family name."

The words clung to Lin Kai heavier than the rain. He wandered, unthinking, toward the old bridge. It groaned with age beneath his feet as he leaned against its rail.

No one followed.

No one called his name.

His breath came in shallow bursts. The world blurred.

> "I tried… I tried so hard to cultivate. Just once. Just… once."

He remembered sitting cross-legged as a child, begging the heavens to answer. His veins burst, his bones ached, but not a single strand of qi ever entered him.

They laughed. Every time.

> "Maybe I'm not meant to exist here."

And with that final thought, he pushed himself over the edge.

---

Darkness.

Water.

Silence.

---

But something didn't end.

Something... arrived.

A spark flared in the void — Kaelen's soul fragment, wrapped in ancient light, hurled through dimensions by a gate that had denied him.

It met Lin Kai's fading soul. The Arcane Codex activated.

Within the collapsing echo of Lin Kai's mind, Kaelen spoke—quietly, not cruelly.

> "You gave up your place. Let me show them what they missed."

Their souls merged, not as master and slave—but as legacy and vessel.

---

Gasp.

Lin Kai's body jolted upright at the riverbank, coughing violently, water spilling from his lungs.

A farmer screamed.

Others ran over, staring in horror.

> "Didn't he… wasn't he…?"

His eyes were open.

But something was wrong.

Lin Kai wasn't crying.

He wasn't panicked.

He was calm. Still.

And his gaze no longer fit a boy who had ever begged anyone for qi.

---

Kaelen, now fully conscious, stood within this unfamiliar body, evaluating it from the inside.

> "Bone density poor. Nervous system stable. But the soul... this soul is incredibly attuned to raw mana. Almost as if it were meant for it."

A smile ghosted across his lips.

> "No spiritual root. No qi. No problem."

As Kaelen slowly stood, the wind stirred unnaturally, spiraling around him in soft arcs, responding not to qi—but to something else. Something older. Something this world forgot.

The villagers murmured behind him. One called his name with hesitation.

But Kaelen—no, Lin Kai now—turned toward the rising dawn without answering.

> "They called him trash. A vessel without roots."

"They were wrong."

His eyes shimmered with arcane light.

> "This body was made for magic. And I… I was made to bring it back."
