Chapter 30: Sin Unbound
The fires of battle still burned in the distance. Crimson hues lit the sky as the remnants of Vaemir's assault disappeared into the dark hollows of the valley. The party returned to their makeshift encampment, bloodied but standing.
Selene and Thalaria dragged the wounded bodies of fallen enemy riders into a pile. Vaeloria wordlessly carved runes in the soil around the camp, placing new wards. Kael walked beside Nysera, her arm draped across his shoulders for support. Though her wounds had been bound, the pain lingered in her steps, the ache deep in her soul heavier than any blade.
They reached a stone terrace half buried under moss and vines. There, the group laid down their gear, unstrapped armor, and exhaled.
Kael collapsed onto a slab of carved granite and looked up at the stars, letting the silence settle. But Nysera remained standing, arms crossed beneath her ample chest, her violet hair tangled with blood and moonlight.
"You were willing to die back there," Kael said finally, not as accusation, but understanding.
"I wasn't sure I'd survive. But... I wanted to see him fall more than I feared death."
Kael stood, approaching her slowly. "He'll fall. And you'll stand over his grave."
She turned her face slightly, shadows falling over her high cheekbones. "You don't know how far his reach goes. Vaemir is just a pawn for someone darker. The one who truly orchestrated my husband's murder... they're still hidden."
Kael's voice dropped. "Then we keep going. All the way."
Nysera looked at him, her eyes glowing faintly with magic and emotion. "You're dangerous when you say things like that."
He smirked. "I know. Makes me more kissable, doesn't it?"
She rolled her eyes, but the smile betrayed her. "Idiot."
Then she stepped close.
Her hand touched his chest, over the place where the Crown of Sin pulsed faintly beneath his skin. Her breath warmed his jaw, and Kael felt her body press into him—warm, soft, fierce.
"I don't want this to be a distraction," she murmured.
"It's not," he said, voice low.
"I want to be yours."
His arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer.
"You already are."
The kiss that followed was slow, sensual—a heat that lingered like the embers of battle. Her lips moved with practiced grace and burning desperation. She let her fingers explore the lines of his neck, tracing the scars earned from war and passion alike.
Their moment was long, unhurried—until a voice broke the tension.
"Well, well," Thalaria said, leaning on her glaive, a teasing grin on her face. "If you two are done feeding each other with your tongues, we've got soup."
Nysera pulled back, a rare blush coloring her cheeks.
Selene threw a cloak at Kael's face. "You're too easy, Crown-boy."
Kael grinned under the fabric. "Jealousy doesn't suit you, Selene."
"Oh please," she said. "I got more curves than your courage can handle."
Thalaria laughed. "Don't tempt him, you'll have your sacred 'union' under a tree tonight."
Nysera shot the two a look but remained silent, clearly not above enjoying the flirtation now that bloodshed had passed.
They shared dinner by the fire—bread, salted meat, spiced roots. But tension simmered below the surface.
Later that night, Kael sat alone beneath the moonlit canopy, watching the stars shift. The system pulsed quietly in his mind.

Footsteps approached softly.
Nysera, cloaked in deep violet, knelt beside him. "You're thinking too loudly."
Kael chuckled. "I thought I was brooding in silence."
"Not from where I'm sitting."
She leaned into his shoulder.
"I want it tonight," she whispered. "The Union. My body, my soul—I want them bound to yours."
He turned to her, brushing hair from her face. "Are you sure?"
She nodded, her eyes shimmering. "After what we survived, I've never been more certain."
They slipped away into the woods, to the hot springs hidden beneath a waterfall. Steam rose through the moonlight as they stepped into the water, shedding armor and wounds. No words were needed.
Their connection built slowly, glances turning to touches, touches into caresses. Their bodies moved in rhythm, sacred and sensual. They whispered each other's names as fingers traced skin, as breaths grew ragged.

As dawn approached, Nysera lay with her head against his chest.
"I've never felt so safe," she murmured.
"And I've never had such dangerous company," Kael replied.
She laughed softly. "We're a terrible match."
"But we fit."
By morning, the mood shifted.
Selene paced near the map circle. "We've got a problem. Movement spotted near the Hollow Bastion ruins. Too coordinated for scavengers."
Thalaria kicked her boots on. "Ambush?"
"Or worse," Vaeloria said. "A summoning. I felt it last night. Something's coming."
Kael rose, gear on.

"We end it before it begins," Kael said. "And if it's Vaemir they want to resurrect, we bury them all in the process."
Vaeloria's gaze sharpened. "You might want to see this."
She extended her palm, revealing a sigil she had ripped from a cultist's chest. It pulsed with a mixture of blood magic and something darker—an ancient crest with a black spiral sun.
Nysera stepped forward, eyes narrowing. "That's not just Vaemir's cult. That's... him."
"Who?" Kael asked.
"The one behind it all," she whispered. "The master of the Midnight Curse. The one who made Vaemir his puppet. His name is lost, but they call him—"
A shadow screamed across the valley.
"—The Hollow Sovereign."
And somewhere far below, the cult began to chant.
