I shifted uncomfortably in the stiff hospital bed, watching Sera check her phone for the fifth time in as many minutes. The worried furrow between her brows was new, and it made my stomach clench with anxiety.
"Everything okay?" I asked, my voice still slightly raspy.
Sera looked up, her expression smoothing into casual indifference so quickly I might have imagined her concern. "Just peachy."
"Liar," I countered, pushing myself up against the pillows. The movement sent a dull ache through my body, reminding me how close to death I'd come. "You keep checking your phone like it might explode. What's wrong?"
She sighed, dropping the pretense. "Your homicidal fated mate has gone silent."
"What do you mean?"
"He was messaging me non-stop for updates about you," she explained, waving her phone. "Demanding to know your vitals, your medication schedule, when you last ate—seriously, the man is obsessive. But now..." She trailed off with a shrug.
"How long has it been?"
