Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: A Promise Unkept

His hands trembled as he stared at the divorce papers. "What do you mean you want a divorce?"

"That's exactly what I want Jacob." His wife folded her arms, her face blank and unapologetic.

"You can't do this to me....don't do this to me... please." Jacob's heart thumped drastically in his chest as it finally dawned that the day he dreaded most was playing right before his face. "At least give me an explanation. What did I do wrong?"

"You want an explanation?" She furrowed her brows with disbelief. "Look at the life we're living Jacob! Take a good look around at this place." He did, and his heart, dropped in disappoinment. Not towards her, but towards himself. And that fact that he could not give her a good life. "It's a freaking mess! This is not the life you promised me. This is not the life you promised my parents! Why make me suffer this much if you know you didn't have it to give!!"

"Azure..."

"Don't you dare call my name. You've been so seated ever since your last job, idle and happy just the way you are and you want me to be okay with that! You want me to build a family with you like this??!" Azure, burst out.

Jacob's heart shattered within him, as he was unable to defend himself. "But you promised you'd stay through thick and thin Az. I worked my ass off every single day just to make sure you're comfortable because of how much I care about you. And you call me idle? Now you want to leave me?"

"The path isn't clear Jacob. You don't have a clear picture of where this relationship would go. So you can't tell me I should keep waiting while I'm busy wasting my time." She retorted. "And yes, I did say that. But I change my mind. You're not the one, and you can't give me what I need. You never will." She turned and was about leaving when she felt a hand grasp hers

She snapped her neck towards him. The face of the woman who once adored and cherished him gone, replaced with a demeaning look that could make any man malfunction. But he held on anyway, maybe... just maybe he could still convince her...maybe he could make her see that he was the one for her.

"Please... please don't leave me. I beg of you, don't let go of this hand. I'll do anything, anything you want." He said, his entire body trembling with the thought of losing this woman. She did stand with him, and moments with her felt like forever, he wasn't ready to turn those moments into a memory, he never wanted her to be a memory. It felt as though if he let her go, it would kill him inside.

She snatched his hand from hers immediately. "I can't do this Jacob. Forget about me."

Her words made him slump. Forget? Did she even understand what she was saying? His body grew oddly weak each passing second.

"Please..." He said, barely in a whisper. But it was too late, she was gone, the door clicking shut behind her. Tears slowly rolled down his cheeks. "Why does everyone leave?" He questioned, replaying the days his parents abandoned him too.

'You useless prick! You should become more like Azial, because of him, honor comes to this house. But you bring nothing but shame. Sometimes I wonder if you're even my son!' His father said causing his mother to snap her head at him.

'Don't you dare question my loyalty Ralph. He's incompetence is as a result of himself. It has nothing to do with any of us.'

Ralph grunted, folding his hands behind him as he looked away from his son in disapproval.

Azial was their favorite. They took him to three prestigious schools, and pampered him at the expense at their own comfort. While he had to work three jobs again to ascertain his school fees was paid. And finally, he dropped out, as his parents cut all his earnings and stripped him off of every fortune he had.

Azial had developed gifts at ten. At eleven he trained to join the team of 'CHEFS'. The most prestigious organization that trained youths who had developed gifts. Everybody was proud of him and now, he was the most high ranked in "gifted".

Jacob sighed laying on the ground in his not so special apartment, staring at the leaking ceiling.

Then his phone rung.

He didn't move...he was too broken to. But with a slow blink he reached for it and picked the call.

"Jacob Hitman?" His brows furrowed. Who was this and how did he know his name? "This is Adri, from CHEFS."

His eyes widened as he immediately became alert.

"Yes."

"Congratulations, we're glad to inform you that you've been selected to work as CHEFS' organizer. You begin work tomorrow."

He opened is mouth to thank him but the one went off before he could.

His body felt a wash of relief and pride as he hugged his phone to his chest. He had a job now, he had something now. He could tell Azure...

He quickly dialed her number but it didn't go through. That

was very unusual of her. And then, it dawned on him.
