Chapter 55 - The Cost of Knowing

They stood at the Codex's heart now.

Not metaphorically.

Not magically.

Literally—inside the central binding, where the original manuscript was written, and where all rewritten truths were absorbed into the world's fabric.

The space wasn't vast.

It was quiet.

A small circular chamber with walls made of pages—each one blank, each one humming.

Waiting.

Juno ran her fingers along a floating glyph, her expression unreadable.

"You ever think maybe we were never supposed to get this far?"

Lyle stared at the pulse of light in the chamber's center—like a candle made from starlight.

"I think," he said slowly, "that someone always had to."

---

The Codex hovered open between them.

No more riddles.

No more resistance.

Begin correction of the Seal?

They didn't answer.

Not yet.

Juno sat down, cross-legged on the floor of floating parchment.

Lyle joined her.

She finally spoke. "Back in the war memory… I saw the faces of those sealing magic away."

He nodded.

"I think I recognized one."

Lyle turned to her. "Who?"

She hesitated.

Then: "Instructor Veil."

Lyle's breath caught.

"She'd be ancient."

"Or not human."

"Or part of something older," Lyle whispered.

They both fell silent.

---

He closed the Codex without confirming the rewrite.

They needed to survive first.

Whatever decision they made—they had to make it together.

And right now, there was one more truth neither wanted to speak aloud.

But the Codex did it for them:

Threadcaster Variant – Silences-Two approaching Core Layer

Estimated time to arrival: 7 minutes.

---

Lyle stood. "He's not going to talk."

Juno followed. "Then we won't ask."

The light in the room dimmed.

Reality around them braced.

And they could feel it:

This wasn't just a fight for survival.

It was a fight to decide which version of the world would be allowed to remain.

And who had the right to rewrite it.
