Chapter 12 - Grandparents' Memories: Identity of the Past and Family Secrets

Grandpa answered sharply, "Your father is a commoner, and his father was also a commoner. Do you think I don't know the origin of the Chauffeur tribe? Your grandfather was a private driver, a servant, and had no education. He worked for other people. But your grandmother was of good birth; it's just that her children weren't like her. Do you think I don't remember the first time I met them, when they were fishing in Lake Temescal?"

"And what education?" Edwin asked.

"To say scarlet instead of red," Hair-Lip said sarcastically. Then he attacked Grandpa again, saying, "My father told me what his father told him before he died. He said your wife was a Santa Rosan, and that she wasn't important. He said she was a 'waitress' before the Red Plague, but I don't know what a waitress is." You tell me, Edwin."

But Edwin shook his head, indicating he didn't know.

Grandpa agreed. "That's true," he said. "She was a waitress in a restaurant, but she was a good woman, and your mother was her daughter. There were very few women after the plague. She's the only one I could have taken as a wife, even if she was a waitress like your father says she was. But it's not good to talk about our ancestors that way."

"My father says the wife of the first Shofir was Lady."

"And what does Lady mean?" Ho-Ho asked.

"Lady is the wife of the Shofir," Her-Lip answered quickly.
