A moan filled with pain escaped the mouth of the young man, as he stirred around on the emperor bed. Each movement of his was accompanied by a pain-filled groan.
"Ughh. Why does my body hurt so much?" The young man said.
The next moment, the young man's eyes snapped open. His eyes opened to the golden chandelier high above him, and he frowned.
"Where am I?" Eric asked.
The first thing that caught his attention was the massive bed he was lying in and how extremely comfortable it was.
But that comfort didn't do anything to lessen the pain he was feeling.
Eric tried to start up push himself up but a sharp pain wracked his body, causing him to hiss.
He let out a sigh but even that was painful for him, as he felt like he was breathing through shards of broken glasses.
His mind was foggy, struggling to piece together what had happened and how he found himself in such a comfortable bed, and in so much pain.
He noticed the sweet fragrance that enveloped the room and also how every time he breathes it in, it lessened the pain.
Unable to do anything, Eric just lay still in the bed, enjoying the comfy bed and allowing the fragrance—or whatever it was—to do its work.
Time passed and after what seemed like an eternity, Eric noticed that the pain has lessened considerably and his mind was no longer foggy.
And that was when everything finally started coming to him. He remembered what had happened. Buying the car and driving to meet his friends. The blinding flash of white light and the accident...
Eric remembered those things but he was confused that he found himself here, instead of the hospital.
"How long was I unconscious for?" He asked himself, as he slowly got up from the bed.
His body was still in mild pain but it was bearable.
Eric brought himself up to a sitting position and looked around, curious to know where he was.
He saw some quite strange things. There was the portrait of a middle man and from the shining armour he was wearing, the man was a knight.
Even though it was just a portrait, Eric could feel a very powerful aura from it. It felt like the man—knight in the portrait was real and was staring at him.
And the longer he gazed at it, the heavier the air around him grew, and an unseen weight starting to press down on his chest, threatening to crush him.
Eric quickly closed his eyes and he felt the pressure disappear just as fast. This only served to add to his confusion, not clear it up.
"Where in the world is this place and what was that portrait?" He muttered, as his eyes fell on another portrait.
It was the image of a beautiful woman dressed in a red, flowing robe and holding what looks like a staff, with a glowing red orb on it.
Just like the first portrait, Eric also felt a very powerful aura from the woman's portrait and he also noticed that the air was starting to become hotter.
He immediately looked away, not curiously in the slightest about what would happen next.
Even more confused, Eric continue to look around and he slowly came to a realisation, as he saw things he knew shouldn't exist.
"Did I die and reincarnate into another?..." He said to himself.
Eric was an avid manhwa and web novel reader, making him very familiar with the concept of reincarnation, regression and the rest.
He didn't want to believe that he has died and reincarnated. He didn't even want to entertain the thought but everything he saw in this massive room were confirming that thought.
He remembered the white flash of light and the accident. He remembered how something collided with his car from behind and sent him flying, and the cold darkness that followed.
"So, I really died..." He said softly, with a sharp pain tightening around his heart.
He thought about his family, his friends and the life he had envisioned for himself. He remembered how he wants to spend the rest of his life, leaving the easy life that he has earned for himself.
The fact that he won't be able to see his family again was painful but the most hurtful, soul crushing and heartbreaking of all was that he wasn't able to enjoy his money at all before dying.
Eric felt a huge wave of anger storming its way up to the surface, with his fists tightening. And the next moment, he lost himself to it and screamed out in rage.
"F*ck!!!"
"F*ck this nonsense! Ahhhh!!!!"
Eric's scream echoed through the massive room and outside, alerting everyone in the house.
In a kitchen that was nearly as big as the room, a young lady who looks to be of similar age to Eric and dressed in a maid uniform, perked up her head when she heard the scream.
"Young Master is awake?!" She muttered in shock.
She quickly dropped the knife in her hand and bolted out of the kitchen, rushing down the long and nearly endless hallway.
Meanwhile in Eric's room, he was looking very exhausted after screaming out all of his anger. He felt so defeated and he was just continuously asking himself the 'why' questions.
Why did it have to happen just when he finally had everything he had ever wanted?
Why did he work so hard, only to die without tasting the fruit of his labour?
Why? Why? Why? Why?!!!
"The world is so f*cking unfair?" He said to himself, as he finally gave up.
He will never get the answers to his questions and so, he could only give up on them and focus on the present instead.
"I wonder if I got a golden finger...," he muttered, and called out, "System?"
There was no response. But not ready to give up, he called out again.
"Status screen."
As if in response, a sound echoed in his head.
